<strong>Gum</strong> disease is a common problem in the United States. According to the Centers for <strong>Disease</strong><br />

Control, nearly half of all adults over age 30 have some form of gum disease or periodontal<br />

disease. By age 65, that percentage increases to almost three-quarters. Since many symptoms of<br />

periodontal disease go unnoticed and untreated, it may already be in the advanced stages by the<br />

time Dr. Moshena Ahmad diagnoses you. At that point, you may wonder “<strong>Can</strong> gum disease be<br />

cured?” The answer to that question is yes.<br />

Symptoms of <strong>Gum</strong> <strong>Disease</strong> and How It Develops<br />

When bacteria builds up on the teeth over time, it eventually causes inflammation and<br />

periodontal disease. You may brush your teeth twice daily and still not get your gums and every<br />

tooth perfectly clean. That’s why periodontal disease is so common. Some indications that you<br />

may have a bacterial infection in the gums include:<br />

Bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth<br />

Red or swollen gums<br />

You’re also more likely to develop periodontal disease if you’re pregnant, smoke tobacco<br />

products, clench your teeth, or are under a lot of stress.<br />

Treatment for <strong>Gum</strong> <strong>Disease</strong><br />

<strong>Gum</strong> disease treatment with Dr. Ahmad typically involves deep cleaning and scaling of the teeth.<br />

This removes the plaque that has accumulated on your teeth and hardened. During this<br />

procedure, Dr. Ahmad concentrates on thoroughly cleaning between the pockets of the teeth<br />

where people tend to have the most infections. She will also perform an examination to make<br />

sure that another problem isn’t causing your gum disease, such as bones loss or loose fillings.<br />

You will need to make a separate appointment for treatment if she discovers a separate dental<br />

You can treat gum disease at home by brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice per day, flossing<br />

between each tooth, and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash. It’s also essential to keep up with<br />

your bi-annual preventive dental appointments.<br />
