The park is named after Braulio Carrillo, who was the third head of state who
governed Costa Rica between 1837 and 1842. Braulio Carrillo drove the cultivation
of coffee and during his government came up with the idea of communicating the
Central Valley with the Caribbean in order to facilitate the transport of this product
to European markets.
The park is located only 24 km from the capital, San José. Braulio Carrillo National
Park is a distinctive attraction of wildlife. The park samples almost all varieties of
native birds of Costa Rica also, both the tropical rainforest, pre-montane and
montane rain forest, is home to hundreds of flora and fauna varieties (according to
located in the Central Volcanic Range and includes the Barva Volcano, Cacho
Black and the Bajo de la Hondura Volcano. It has a conservation area that reaches
47,588 hectares, making it the largest protected area in the central region of the
country. On the steep forested mountains, live 6000 species of plants comprising
half of the plant species that exist in Costa Rica, of which at least 50 are endemic.
Its territory is covered mostly of primary forest. This park is considered as the lungs
of San Jose since the forest covering the park, provides a delicate balance of
carbon dioxide-oxygen.
Because of the few officials present in the park, hunters come very easily and
pitifully end with the fauna of the park gradually. Another threat is the illegal
deforestation, as hunters come into the park and begin to cut. Many researchers
recognize that forests of the park should be studied more carefully since they have
great determination to be preserved in the midst of the urban environment.
