Unit 6 Topic The New Future of Research Universities -- The role of American research universities is changing
drastically as the demands and needs of a nation in transformation impact the expectations and obligations to improve
societal conditions and remain globally competitive. According to the National Academies (2012), a report conducted by
the National Research Council, requested by Congress, suggests that institutions are in danger of serious decline
unless the federal government, states, and industry take action to ensure adequate, stable funding in the next decade
(para. 1). Alarming claims resulting from the report?s findings indicate that the American University as we know it is in
serious jeopardy without the financial support of the federal, state, and local governments. In addition, the report
emphasizes that industries must also support the efforts of research universities to improve productivity and prepare a
21st century workforce through appropriate educational pathways and career training. Please access and examine
these resources, available from this unit's Reading, and pay particular attention to the recommended ten strategic
actions that the nation should take in the next 5 to 10 years to maintain top-quality U.S. research institutions. Use
additional links and resources from the National Academy of Sciences web page to further inform your opinions and
arguments. Following your review of the article, please critique the merit of the views expressed by offering your own
informed opinion of the conclusions and recommendations offered by the writers of the report. Choose two strategic
actions to write about and analyze. Compose a 3-paragraph follow-up response that could otherwise be submitted as a
letter to the editor(s) of this report. Include the following elements in your response: Define your two chosen strategic
actions. Demonstrate in your opinion agreement or disagreement with your two chosen strategic actions. If you agree
that these are relevant actions provide a strong rationale why with supporting evidence from the literature. If you
disagree with these actions defend your opinion and provide evidence from the literature that supports your disapproval.
If you agree with these actions, provide examples of how they could be initiated and implemented. If you do not agree
with these actions, provide alternative solutions to achieving the goals of these initiatives. Your valued opinions
expressed in this response piece should be based on your own personal and professional experience, as well as
additional resources that you include to support your response. After you post your response, go on to review and
comment on the postings by your colleagues in this course. Reference The National Academies. (2012, June 14). For
future prosperity, U.S. should strengthen efforts to maintain world-class research universities. Retrieved from
