theory that exists within the linguistic community is the idea of a Mother Tongue. After watching the Murray Gell-Mann
on the Ancestor of Language video, type the phrase ?language tree,? into an Internet search engine. Look at images of
language trees, and consider the possibility of a Mother Tongue. Language trees are essentially graphic representations
that show relationships between language families. The Ethnologue language family index has a comprehensive list of
all of the language families. Click on one of the language families, and explore the contents. Explore at least two,
separate language families. Think about how the languages are similar, and then address the following: Summarize the
lineage of both language families you explored in the Ethnologue. Identify how many languages are comprised in this
family. Describe how all the languages in each family are similar. Explain your thoughts on the Mother Tongue theory.
Do you think the theory is plausible? Explain why or why not? There are no correct or incorrect answers. Your initial post
should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other
scholarly sources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates who chose a different
language family than you did by Day 7, comparing how they are different/similar. Also, discuss whether or not you agree
with their views on the Mother Language Theory.
