Estimated average prosecuti<strong>on</strong> cost for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> death penalty<br />

compared to life without parole:<br />

• Based <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most recent U.S. Census data for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> U.S., Goss & Associates c<strong>on</strong>cludes that:<br />

As a percentage <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> overall state and local budgets, DP states spent 3.54 percent <strong>on</strong> justice, 5 while<br />

NDP states spent a much lower 2.93 percent <strong>on</strong> justice.<br />

- Nine <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> top 10 spending states were DP states.<br />

with LWOP.<br />

III. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Nebraska</strong> experience:<br />

• Between 1973 and 2014, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re were 1,842 murders in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>State</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Nebraska</strong>.<br />

- Of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se, prosecutors sought <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> DP in <strong>on</strong>ly 119 cases, or approximately<br />

2.9 cases per year, resulting in <strong>on</strong>ly 33 death sentences.<br />

- Of <strong>Nebraska</strong>’s 33 individuals sentenced to death.<br />

• <strong>Nebraska</strong> courts commuted 13 sentences.<br />

• Six individuals died in pris<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• One individual’s sentence was vacated.<br />

• Three individuals were executed.<br />

• Attorneys are currently appealing 10 sentences.<br />
