RAIL JOURNEYS
On many of our trips, Kirra include one or several of New Zealand’s great rail
journeys. Travelling by train allows you to sit back, relax in comfort and enjoy
spectacular scenery you simply can't see from the road.
DRIVING CREEK RAILWAY
At the North Island township of Coromandel, experience New Zealand’s only narrow-gauge
mountain railway along with a working pottery and wildlife sanctuary. One of New Zealand’s most
popular train rides, Driving Creek Railway will take you through replanted native kauri forest and
across several large viaducts as you make your way to the mountain terminus. From here you’ll
enjoy great panoramic views over the island studded Hauraki Gulf with the forested valley and
mountains behind.
COASTAL PACIFIC
The Coastal Pacific train travels between Christchurch and Picton. The scenery is truly
remarkable. The journey starts by crossing the Canterbury Plains, where vast braided rivers
dissect a patchwork of horticultural and farming landscapes. Then travel along a thin strip
of coastal land with the Kaikoura Ranges rising steeply on one side and the Pacific Ocean
swells washing over a rocky coastline on the other. Seals and penguins can often be seen
on the rocks as you continue your journey to the picturesque fishing village of Picton in the
Marlborough Sounds. In total, the Coastal Pacific will carry you through 22 tunnels and
across 175 bridges.
TRANZALPINE
The other intrepid South Island rail route is one of the world’s most scenic. The TranzAlpine
will take you on a coast to coast train journey through the spectacular Southern Alps. It
links the city of Christchurch to historic Greymouth, a river town on the rugged West Coast.
Highlights include the 73 metre high Staircase viaduct, Arthur’s Pass National Park and the
Otira tunnel. You will experience a total of 19 tunnels and four viaducts and the outdoor
viewing carriage will get you close to the fresh alpine air and awesome scenery.
Other rail journeys including the Taieri Gorge in Dunedin are available to purchase as optional
excursions subject to timing and availability.
