The world of work has become an increasingly difficult environment<br />
<strong>for</strong> young people.<strong>Youth</strong> unemployment in Australia is persistently<br />
higher than <strong>for</strong> other age groups, a large numbers of young<br />
Australians struggling to find and maintain their jobs. Currently the<br />
youth unemployment rate in Australia sits at 13.19 percent as of<br />
June 2016. These situation highlights the continued importance of<br />
government policy and program that focus on young people’s<br />
transitions to employment in Australia. But in addition to these, what<br />
can young people do to solve this social issue?<br />
Use multiple plat<strong>for</strong>ms<br />
Young job seekers should findi and make use of a<br />
variety of tools, where available, to help them find<br />
jobs. Formal and in<strong>for</strong>mal business and social<br />
network proving valuable sources of career<br />
in<strong>for</strong>mation and guidance.<br />
Internships and volunteerism<br />
Formal education curricula are often overly theoretical, leaving<br />
students feeling illprepared and lacking the necessary practical<br />
skills <strong>for</strong> the labour market. Some young people consequently<br />
delay their entry into the job market to continue their studies or<br />
seek out lowlevel jobs.Internships and volunteerism offer<br />
opportunities to gain work experience and improve employment<br />
prospects, including in entrepreneurship.<br />
Entrepreneurship<br />
The creation of small and mediumsized enterprises are not only<br />
an important and effective means to overcome high<br />
unemployment rates and poor working conditions, but also the<br />
leading source of job creation and sustainable growth.<br />
Be confident and optimistic<br />
Many youth conveyed a lack of confidence in their futures.<br />
However, there was broad agreement that selfmotivation,<br />
dedication, patience and a positive outlook are key elements<br />
of successful job searching.
