At World Challenge we believe community engagement should
achieve two important outcomes.
Firstly, it should inspire young people. By enabling them to live and
work alongside locals, young people become exposed to different
cultures and naturally broaden their own horizons. Secondly,
community engagement should live up to its name; it should engage
the host community in a positive and lasting way.
Our initiatives are aimed at a variety of causes according to local
needs – supporting education, improving sanitation, reducing
environmental impact, but all are worthwhile as part of a bigger
picture plan.
The Sustainable Development Goals
were set by the UN in 2015. By
2030 it’s hoped these new
Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) will have been met. During
the community engagement phase,
teams will have the opportunity to
learn about how some of these
issues impact local people and the
communities they live in. Our aim is
to support projects that enable
teams to make a meaningful
contribution towards a better world
through a shared learning
experience.
Throughout the homestay and
the work at the project we were
fully exposed to the local
lifestyle and were invited to
partake freely of it. It was a
great learning experience and
the team left with a greater
understanding of some of the
trials and tribulations of living
and working in such a
community. EL Graham Carlson
