Photo Submitted Turning party favors into a good deed Tinley Park girl donates toys to the cancer foundation F. Amanda Tugade, Editor Everyone knows the saying: it is better to give than receive. And Ella Beaudry kept that mantra at the forefront of her recent birthday party. Beaudry, of Tinley Park, turned 7 years old on Oct. 20, and she invited her closest friends to a fun moviethemed celebration at the Tinley Park Performing Arts Center. The only condition attendees had to abide by was that they had to bring a toy that she would later donate to The Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation, an Orland Park-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide toys and smiles to children with cancer. With at least 20 guests in attendance at her party, Ella’s mother Dawn said her daughter collected more than 30 toys. On Nov. 4, Dawn dropped off the donations at the foundation. Dolls, coloring books and craft kits were items available in the selection. To add, this is not the first time Ella has turned her birthday party into a mission to help others. Dawn said the idea to donate Ella’s toys first began as an effort to declutter. “We started it when she was 5,” Dawn said, adding she found out about the foundation through an advertisement and thought they would be the perfect recipients. “We researched [the Treasure Chest] through the website, and we liked what they were about.” Dawn noted that since then, the initiative to give away toys to other children came from Ella, herself. “I wanted to make sick kids better, happy!” Ella said of her deed. When asked to reflect on her daughter’s actions, Dawn added, “It makes me feel proud that she loves to do that and help other kids who need cheering up.” Colleen Kisel, founder and CEO of the Treasure Chest Foundation, shared Dawn’s sentiments. “In this day of age when little girls are asking for the latest toy, this little girl is giving away the latest toys to kids fighting cancer,” she said. “There are 37,000 children and teens undergoing treatment in the nation, and we’re serving 10,000. If there were more Ella’s in the world, we could serve more kids fighting cancer.” For more information call (708) 326-9170 ext. 16 or visit www.22ndcenturymedia.com/events
