book Probable Tomorrows (Cetron & Davies, 1997) attempts to think ahead 20 years in medicine, science, and
technology. The authors correctly predicted some future events (e.g., Digital Everything), but others have yet to occur
(e.g., Simple Cancer Cures). Similarly, education experts and observers engage in the same predictive exercises, trying
to identify future trends. Recently, Teaching 2030 reviewed current trends and provides a vision of a probable tomorrow
for public schools. To create the public schools all students deserve, today and tomorrow, the authors call on
policymakers and the public to work with teachers by (Teaching 2030, 2011, para. 8-9):
Creating a dynamic and flexible learning environment for students and teachers, and powerful new ways to define and
measure school success; Transforming public education through digital technologies while reinventing brick and mortar
school buildings into 24/7 hubs of community support for students and families; Re-imagining teaching as a
well-compensated career with many pathways, assuring that every child has qualified and effective teachers and that
teaching expertise is constantly spread, in and out cyberspace; and Establishing a new leadership force of 600,000
teacher preneurs, classroom experts who continue to teach students regularly while also serving as teacher educators,
policy researchers, community organizers, and trustees of their profession. Initial Post: Choosing one of the four
predicted trends listed above, provide at least three possible paths your prediction could take on the road to fruition by
2030 using strategic thinking strategies (The Six Key Elements of Strategic Thinking, 2013). In your post, evaluate which
of your ideas you predict is most likely to occur, supporting your thoughts through citation of historical precedents and
educational trends.
