Yukon Geography
Land Area 478,970 km 2
Freshwater Area 4,480 km 2
The Yukon represents 4.8% of Canada’s total
land area and is the eighth largest province or
territory. Within the territory, 20 mountain peaks
exceed 3,000 metres. Mount Logan, the tallest
at 5,959 metres, is also the fastest growing
mountain in the world. The largest, non-polar ice
field in the world is in the St. Elias Mountains.
The ice field is believed to reach 700 metres in
depth and feed glaciers up to 30 kilometres long.
Emblems and Symbols
The official bird of the Yukon is
the raven. This large intelligent
bird is one of the few that live in
the territory year-round.
Our floral
emblem is the
Fireweed. Most
commonly found in old burns
and open meadows, Fireweed’s
magenta blooms abound from
mid-July to mid-September.
Lazulite, the official gemstone,
is a rare, azure blue, semiprecious
gemstone, found
in remote northeast Yukon.
The name is derived from
the Arabic word “laza”, which
means heaven.
The sub-alpine fir (Abies
lasiocarpa) was selected as
Yukon’s official tree in 2001.
measures compare with the imperial system, perhaps
the charts below will help you figure it all out.
