At Santa Monica, California, the Douglas
Aircraft Company C-1, A.S. 25-425, made its
first flight. The new aircraft was requested by
the U.S. Army Air Service to fill the role of a
cargo transport. The single-engine biplane had a
crew of two in an open cockpit and could carry
6–8 passengers in an enclosed compartment,
or 2,500 pounds (1,134 kilograms) of cargo. A
trapdoor in the floor allowed heavy cargo to be
lifted directly into the airplane.
A ski-equipped United States Air Force Douglas
C-47A Skytrain, piloted by Lieutenant Colonels
William P. Benedict and Joseph O. Fletcher,
USAF, was the first airplane to land at the North
Pole.* The navigator was 1st Lieutenant Herbert
Thompson. Staff Sergeant Harold Turner was
the flight engineer and Airman 1st Class Robert
L. Wishard, the radio operator.
United States Air Force,
commanding the 8th
Tactical Fighter Wing
based at Ubon Rachitani
RTAFB, shot down his second enemy airplane
during the Vietnam War.
Colonel Olds had flown Lockheed P-38 Lightning
and North American P-51 Mustang fighters
during World War II. He is officially credited
with shooting down 12 enemy airplanes over
Europe and destroying 11.5 on the ground.
with some traditional
analog CDI displays, including
the Bendix King KI209A
and KCS55A HSI system.
It also interfaces with many
existing analog and digital
autopilot systems—providing
GPS roll steering and full
nav tracking capability. The
KSN770 is fully compatible
with the Aspen Evolution PFD
and MFD and with the Bendix
King KI825 electronic HSI.
The system will also interface
with the Honeywell
RDR2000/2100 and
RDS84-series weather radar.
The weather data can
newer products from Bendix
ADS-B transponder and the
KMA30 audio control panel
(a product that’s made by
PS Engineering but wears
a Bendix King faceplate).
5th Annual Take
Flight 5K!
MAY 21: It’s a home cooked southern breakfast,
great fellowship and flying pilots & aviation
enthusiasts in and near South Carolina have
met for breakfast. No dues, no meeting requirements.
Breakfast is around $6 - $10 per plate, is
ready about 9am and there is always plenty. Fly
in or drive to the airport, belly up and talk aircraft,
aviation, or anything else, to your hearts
content Pilot or non-pilot,
everyone is welcome.
FUN FACT:
MAY 24th
Charles Edward Taylor
was an American inventor,
mechanic and machinist.
He built the first
aircraft engine used by
the Wright brothers and
was a vital contributor
(May 24, 1868 –
of mechanical skills in the
January 30, 1956)
building and maintaining of
early Wright engines and airplanes.
With a list price of $14,141,
the KSN770 may not attract
the lower end of the market
that’s been waiting for the
low-cost alternative products
that Bendix King initially
promised. It is however a
powerful FMS that can hold
its own against the Garmin
750 that is 30% cheaper and
plays well with other legacy
components in your aircraft
without costly patch units.
“The KSN770 is the first of
many products that Bendix
King is developing as we move
toward the future. It’s the cornerstone
of the diverse product
line we plan to build going
forward,” said Roger Dykmann,
Bendix King’s director
of product development.
