EGCE 406: Bridge Design
Homework 3 (Due Monday, September 10 th 2007)
Assume the compressive strength of concrete is 350 ksc and the yield strength of the
steel is 3000 ksc. Make any other assumptions as necessary.
1. Determine the ultimate moment capacity per 1 linear meter width of a reinforced
concrete one-way slab as shown below.
If the design live load on the slab is 300 kg/m 2 . What is the maximum span length of
the slab? Use the following load and resistance factors for the ultimate strength limit
state (from ACI 318, 2002):
φMn
≥ Mu
0.9M ≥ 1.2M + 1.6M
n DL LL
2. Determine the ultimate moment capacity of the following reinforced concrete
beams:
Compare the moment capacity between the two cases. How much the ultimate
moment capacity increase or decrease when adding the compression reinforcement?
