Lumos is an award-winning, innovative<br />
bicycle helmet, and the first we’ve seen to<br />
really nail the seemingly simple and elegant<br />
concept behind integrating lights and turn<br />
signals into a bicycle helmet.<br />
Started in a basement garage by two<br />
engineers in Boston, the founders got started<br />
tinkering on Lumos as a side project. Both<br />
were regular bicycle commuters, and often<br />
found themselves biking at night without<br />
lights when they forgot them.<br />
Launched on Kickstarter in 2015, Lumos<br />
turned a lot of heads when it ended up raising<br />
over $800,000 USD during their month long<br />
campaign, making it the highest funded bike<br />
helmet crowdfunding campaign ever. It was a<br />
daunting engineering and design challenge.<br />
Not only did the helmet have to have the<br />
LED and electronics features functioning<br />
flawlessly, but they had to integrate them<br />
into the helmet in a way that would not<br />
compromise the impact absorption aspects<br />
of the bike helmet – a critical factor.<br />
Lumos reemerged in September 2016,<br />
shipping over 10,000 Lumos Helmets to<br />
Kickstarter backers around the world. The<br />
Lumos Helmet has proved to be a hit with<br />
city cyclists. Cars appear to give riders<br />
more space, and drivers seem to genuinely<br />
understand and respond to the turn signals.<br />
Lumos has swept a number of industry<br />
awards since then including the Eurobike<br />
Gold Award, the Red Dot Design Award, and<br />
was named one of the six Designs of the Year<br />
by The Design Museum in London.<br />
The Lumos team isn’t resting on their<br />
laurels, and are already actively working on<br />
the next generation of their ground-breaking<br />
