There is no doubt that 1917 was a
notable year in Kiowa County. That
was the first year that Eads became…
Eads…with its incorporation as a town.
That was the year that the high school
was accredited, an achievement which
the superintendent predicted, “…will
allow Eads High School to set a new
standard for superior schools in the
entire state of Colorado.” The Kiowa
County Fair and Rodeo, still a new
event at the time, was going strong.
Here we are, one hundred years later,
and, if the 2017 Kiowa County Fair
and Rodeo is any indication, things just
might be going better than ever.
The stage for the Rodeo and Fair was
set with the “All School Reunion”. This
year’s centennial celebration brought
hundreds of alumni back to Eads for
most of the duration of the fair, and
their presence was certainly felt and
most definitely welcome, from sold

black and white image of a serious,
slender young jockey on horseback.
He’s not at full gallop; neither he nor
the house seem to even be moving, at
all, but are, instead, captured forever
in that moment “just before”.
Just before the gates open; just before
the thunder of hooves on dirt shakes
the ground as they pass; just before
Jesus and his horse fly down the track
as they barely even graze the earth beneath
their feet.

The 2017 Kiowa County Fair and Rodeo successfully came to a close Sunday.
Another year down, with many more to go. Join the Indy in expressing
a thank you to all of the volunteers who made this year a success!

JOCKEY THROWN FROM HORSE, SUSTAINS LIFE THREATENING INJURIES

table occupied to local merchants experiencing
an increase in foot traffic.
Once the Fair and Rodeo really got
rocking, those several hundred people
along with the CPRA event that
typically draws several thousand people
on its own resulted in grandstands
described as “packed”, a turnout that
was great news to the 26 vendors who
lined the midway and set up shop inside
the Community Hall.
Bart Michaels, President of the Fair
Board, had this to say about this year’s
fair and rodeo. “We won’t know until
we count tickets later this week,” he
says, “but, at this point, it looks like
this year was one of the biggest ones
we’ve had in quite a while.”

a person could want from the traditional
funnel cakes to authentic

grandstands full of roaring crowds, no
other jockeys on horseback flanking
his sides or coming up from behind, it
seems as if Jesus (Chuyito) Munoz is
