WANG FAMILY CHRONICLE
THE HONORABLE MADAM CHEN WANG YIN-HE
九 十 一 世 程 母 汪 銀 河
Born in 1908, Grand Elder Yin-He was her parents’
beloved first born daughter and the loving sister of
her two younger brothers. She married into the Chen
程 family of Nan-Yuan-Kou Village 南 源 囗 when she
was nineteen, raised a family of a boy and a girl.
Eighty-ninth Generation Grand Mother Yao 姚 太 夫 人
and her parents, the Ninetieth Generation father Tian
Qi 天 琪 公 and mother Ba 巴 太 夫 人 to the end. She also
established our ancestral burial grounds on nearby
Tai Han Mountain 太 函 山 .
5
Since both of her brothers were pursuing their careers
in other parts of China and her parents were getting
older, at the urge of the brothers and her parents’
requests, the Chen family allowed her moving back
to her parent’s home. In 1937, with her children, she
settled in at home in Hui Zhou and took over the
responsibilities of the household. She made that
decision at the crucial time when her family needed
her. It was clearly unprecedented at that time for a
married woman with dual loyalties.
She participated in the management of the family
properties, engaged in the production of the tea
production business, arranged the daily lives of the
Grand Elder Yin-He provided a loving home and
raised her children according to the family tradition
of “Character and Knowledge.” Our ancestral home
had survived the war and turmoil throughout the
years was because of her able management and the
continuing presence of her children and grandchildren
in the house. For that we are very grateful!
The Honorable Madam Chen Wang Yin-He passed
away in 1988 at age eighty-two.
Fondly remembered — our beloved loving
WANG FAMILY CHRONICLE
THE HONORABLE WANG DAO-YUAN
九 十 一 世 汪 公 道 源
The Engineer
Wang Dao-Yuan was born in 1911 in An-Hui Province,
She County, Twin Spring District. He grew up under
the guidance of his father who nurtured his character
and his belief in the importance of science and
technology, preparing him to be a dedicated,
hardworking engineer.
In 1926, he went to Shanghai to begin his education
in the big city at the highly regarded Nan Yang
University High School. Four years later, he was
automatically accepted into the freshman class at the
Department of Civil Engineering of Shanghai Jiao
Tong University — an institution with an emphasis
on transportation planning and development. After
obtaining his degree in civil engineering, Mr. Wang
responded to a government call to “Develop the
Greater Northwest” and started his engineering career
in the rural and barren northwest region of China.
In the Northwest, Mr. Wang participated in the design
of Xi-An Station and Hua-Yin Station on the Nong-Hai
Railroad, the Long Bridge over the Ju River, and the
route exploration survey and construction of the
Xi-Bao Railroad. Later, he was on the team surveying
and determining the route of the Bao-Cheng
Railroad. Braving the unforgiving weather conditions
and the danger of wild animal attacks, he worked on
foot all the way from Bao-Ji to Chengdu, a distance of
over one thousand kilometers. The result of that work
established the foundation for the construction of
the Bao-Cheng Line.
When the Japanese occupied China’s Pacific coast,
the only line of supply for military and civilian goods
from outside the country was from Myanmar and
India through Yen-Nan Province. Creating this vital
transportation link became a high priority of the
war effort. Mr. Wang spent seven years on that
new frontier. He worked on the YunNan-Myanmar
Railroad, the YunNan-Myanmar Highway, the Xi-Xiang
Highway, Cheng-Gong Airport, and the YenNan–
India oil pipeline; his duties ranging from survey,
design and engineering, to construction, emergency
restorations and repairs, assuring the safe passage
of goods and personnel.
After the Japanese surrender, Mr. Wang became
the Associate Director in charge of construction of
Paishiyi Airport in Chongqing. He was also the team
leader for survey and route determination of the
Southwest Railroad, where he walked through many
wild mountains, directing and performing field survey
work. Not until 1959 when he settled in the Chengdu
Bureau of the Department of Railroads as Associate
Chief Engineer, did Mr. Wang have a more stable
family life.
After 1949, in the years of development of the
new country, Mr. Wang participated in the survey,
route determination, design, engineering and
construction supervision of several railroad lines,
including the Qian-Gui, Chuang-Qian, Cheng-Kun,
Gui-Kun, Ying-Xia, Li-Zhan, Kun-Luo, and
Cheng-Da lines. His diligence and engineering
competence earned him the trust and admiration
of his peers and superiors. He received numerous
awards and formal recognitions.
Mr. Wang passed away in 1965 at his workplace in
Chengdu. Throughout his life he was dedicated to
the development of a railroad network in China,
immersed in the profession without regard to his
own health and personal well-being. With the
silent dedication and perseverance of a typical
engineer, he witnessed and enabled building the
transportation infrastructure of his beloved country.
The unprecedented economic development we see
today in China is a great testimony to the effort,
experience and expertise of people like Mr. Wang.
He is, for sure, smiling down at us for these
extraordinary achievements.
THE HONORABLE WANG DAO-YUAN
九 十 一 世 汪 公 道 淵
The Public Servant
Born in 1913 in An-Hui Province, She County,
Twin Spring District, in the old Ye House, Mr. Wang
received his basic education in the tradition of
Zi Yang Academy in Hui-Zhou where he developed
a profound understanding of traditional philosophy
and cultural teachings that greatly influenced him
later as a “Renaissance Man.” After receiving his law
degree from Da-Xia University in Shanghai, Mr. Wang
worked as an editor at the National Central University
Library in Nanjing. When the Japanese invasion of
China intensified in 1937, he decided to join the Army
and took a job as a political instructor at the Central
Military Academy and started his lifelong career
as a teacher, a scholar, a civil servant, an official, a
commander, and a leader in the Nationalist Chinese
Government in Taiwan.
After a career as military instructor, college professor
and civil administrator, Mr. Wang was appointed
Chief of the Military Courts of the Ministry of National
Defense; he also led the Military Appeals Courts,
was Minister of Justice, Minister of National Defense,
and later, the Secretary of the National Security
Council and Vice Chancellor of the Judicial Yuan.
He retired eventually from the position of Senior
Presidential Advisor.
Mr. Wang’s humble, self-restrained, open, practical
personality and approach in working with people
earned him the trust of two generations of the Chiang
presidency in both civilian and military appointments.
He was regarded as “the Scholar-Warrior” by his
peers and admirers.
Mr. Wang was notable for his efforts in reforming
the civil judicial system, granting equal procedural
rights to the accuser and the accused. He was
also instrumental in reforming the military Judicial
apparatus, moving the trial branch away from levels
of military command, introduced the appeals process,
making the trial and sentencing processes totally
independent. People called him “Blue-Sky Wang”
celebrating the transparency of the reformed system.
He was honored by Pusan University in Korea with an
honorary Doctor of Philosophy for his contributions
to Taiwan’s judicial system. His writings include:
“Analysis and Commentary of the Civilian Common
Law” and “An Introduction to International Laws.”
Mr. Wang was the recipient of the Presidential
Bao-Ding Medal for his exemplary contributions to
the National Defense system and the enactment
of the National Security Act in 1987.
Mr. Wang passed away in 2011 of natural causes at
his home in Taipei. He was cremated and entombed
with his wife of 74 years at the National Military
Cemetery with full military honor. His memorial mass
at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Taipei was
attended by members of four generations of his
family, representatives of the government, society
leaders, friends and admirers.
This bilingual Hui Zhou Jing-An-Tang Wang Family
loving father and grandfather with profound loving
memories and ultimate respect.
THE HUI ZHOU WANG FAMILY HAS A LONG HISTORY…
11
In 1997, my father, the 91st Generation Grand Elder,
the Honorable Dao Yuan
道 淵 公 , at the urging of my siblings, wrote an
abbreviated History of the Hui Zhou Wang Family,
starting from the very origin of the family name,
Wang, to our relocation to south of the Yangtze River,
to the settlement in Hui Zhou, Anhui Province, and
our move to Taiwan. He recounted major events in
distant history and included more details of recent
generations.
That document is presented here in its original form
in my father’s brush and ink handwriting. This is the
only document we know of recounting the history of
the Wang Family in Hui Zhou and its current state. It
was written in modified classical Chinese literary style.
Both my son Wang Li Shion and my daughter Wang
Fon Shion have a fair command of conversational
Chinese Putonghua. Both of them were born, raised
and educated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They
have a natural identification with Chinese culture.
Periodical visits to Grandma’s house in Taipei have
also instilled in them the concept of an extended
family dispersed all over the world. Their daily
immersion in American society, however, does not
give them the opportunity to study and understand
Chinese society and to be in close spiritual proximity
to their extended family.
Translating this History of the Hui Zhou Wang Family
into English appears to be appropriate and necessary.
Our children and their descendants are entitled to
proudly carry on the family name and family tradition.
Three thousand years of history may be preserved for
another three thousand years and beyond.
It is hoped that the process of preparing and printing
this bilingual booklet will also generate interest
among family members in family history. This
little booklet may grow into a depository of family
documents and become a family heirloom. Already,
we have collected information regarding our
ancestral home in Hui Zhou.
In this English version, Romanization of Chinese
names and words generally follows Xiandai Han
Yu Cidian 1998 standards. There may be variations
and deviations because of actual usage, regional
differences, and contemporary customs.
Because of cultural differences between the two
languages, this is neither a direct translation nor
a rewrite. Every effort was made to preserve the
tone and mood of the original sentences. American
English pronunciation of these PinYin Romanized
Chinese words may not be accurate. That is why
corresponding Chinese words are inserted next to
all proper nouns.
92nd Generation QiNan 其 楠 in Wuhan transcribed
the original manuscript into Traditional Chinese
printing style. QiKai 其 楷 in Chengdu reviewed draft
copies several times with many valuable suggestions
that improved both the content and format of this
book. QiKai also supplied valuable information
and photographs of our ancestral home. Bob
Henry Becker reviewed the initial draft and offered
suggestions on clarity. Nathan Sivin commented
on accuracy and appropriateness. David Dembe
proofread all English documents in their final version.
My wife 陳 啓 恒 participated in all phases of the
preparation with encouragement and suggestions.
She also final proofread of all Chinese texts and
documents. Front cover design is an enlargement of
stone seal 篆 刻 《 敬 安 堂 》by Chao-Chuan Yu 喻 肇 川
supervised its printing.
So, use this book as the beginning of your exploration
into the history of the Hui Zhou Wang Family; add,
modify, improve it, and treat it as a work in progress.
Some history books and existing documents may
give you additional information on local societal
and cultural backgrounds. There are also Chinese
websites recounting historical events and current folk
celebrations of our ancestry in Hui Zhou. They are
actually quite entertaining.
WANG FAMILY CHRONICLE
At the end of Sui Dynasty [about 600AD], the country was divided into individual
strongholds and self-governing territories. The founder of the Tang Dynasty — Li Shimin
李 世 民 — conquered them one by one. Grand Elder Wang Hua 汪 華 in Hui Zhou was
the leader of the last independent stronghold, which Li Shimin’s Army was determined
to attack. Everyone in the Wang camp declared their willingness to fight for control of
the country. The Honorable Hua thought differently: “Currently, in the entire country,
there are only two of us fighting, Li and I. While the final result is not to be predicted,
the common people will suffer in the process.” He decided to negotiate with Li Shimin,
resulting in the unification of China by the Li Family and the establishment of the
Tang Dynasty [618AD–907AD]. Although from their point of view, Li Tang’s people
recorded a victory over Wang in their history, the fact that Wang was given the land
and the title of Grand Duke Yue 越 國 公 , has led us to believe it was a negotiated
peace between the two parties.
Grand Duke Yue Wang Hua 越 國 公 汪 華 ruled Hui Zhou in peace and prosperity. Wang
families expanded and continued that lineage and enjoy kinship to this day. People in the
six counties respected and bore a debt of gratitude to Grand Duke Wang Hua. He was
honored and worshipped as Wang Gong Da Di 汪 公 大 帝 [Great God Duke Wang] and as
King Wang 汪 王 . At many places in Southern Anhui Province, the Temples of King Wang
汪 王 廟 and Great King Temples 大 帝 廟 still exist.
According to Tang Dynasty official records, Duke Yue died in Chang An 長 安 [present
day Xian 西 安 ] the Tang 唐 capital city, and was entombed on Wu Qing Mountain 吳 清
山 in the District of Hui Zhou, about 10 Li [7 miles] east of She Xian 歙 縣 where the main
family ancestral hall is located. In the substantially constructed temple and tomb, people
celebrate Grand Duke Yue Wang Hua on holidays throughout the year, particularly
during New Year’s celebrations.
Tang Dynasty Official History 唐 史 紀 載
Tang Dynasty 唐 朝 [618AD–907AD] official history documents included the following:
『Wang Hua of Hui Zhou is known for bravery in his youth. At the end of the Sui 隋 dynasty
[581AD-618AD], he provided protection from violence and turmoil for over six counties,
that included Shuan, Kong, Noo, Kuei, Nao, and Yao, counties, and declared himself King
Wu 吳 王 . For over ten years, areas under his control avoided disturbances from war. In
the Wu De 武 德 era, Wang Hua 汪 華 was defeated by Tang General Wang Xiong-Dan
王 雄 誕 , but was dubbed Yue Guo Gong [Duke Yue] 越 國 公 and became the Governor of
Hui Zhou. He also assumed responsibility for military matters in the six counties. Current
residents in those counties are all descendants of Wang Hua. 』
Folk Celebrations 汪 王 民 俗
At the beginning of the Second Month of the Lunar Year, people also celebrate Duke Yue
Wang Hua’s birthday. Thousands of Wang folks from all over the province gather at the
celebration each year. “I [Grand Elder Dao Yuan] used to accompany my father and my
elder brother wearing our best to attend these ceremonies. We would leave home early
in the morning, walk to the temple, offering a bowl of birthday noodles before entering
the ceremonial hall. At lunch time, people shared lots of meat and wine, celebrating
kinship and togetherness. On the way home, father usually retold to my brother and me
this history of the Wang family and Duke Yue Wang Hua. These memories are as vivid as
if it were yesterday.”
18
Grand Duke Yue Wang Hua had nine sons, Wang Jian 建 being the first and Wang
Shuang 爽 being the youngest. The two of them had many descendants and their families
prospered. Our branch of the family came from the Honorable Jian Clan 建 公 派 .
The Honorable Wang Jian 汪 建 probably inherited the title of Grand Duke Yue 越 國 公 .
There is no formal documentation about his governance to be found, however.
Naming the Generations 世 代 排 行
19
WANG FAMILY CHRONICLE
The eighth son of Grand Duke Yue, Wang Jun 浚 , stood out in our family history. People
called him Ba Xiang Gong 八 相 公 [Grand Eighth Duke]. A total of one hundred and eight
societies were formed in his honor. At every seasonal celebration of the year, people
invited him [his spirit] to preside and officiate over the month-long celebration. The main
society Ying Yang She 迎 陽 社 [Rising Sun Society] in their religious celebration on the
First Day of the Eighth Month has the following offering verse: “Honorable and divine,
you assisted your father Duke Yue Wang Hua, settled the turmoil at the end of the
Sui Dynasty and co-governed the country in the beginning of the Tang Dynasty with
great success.” I learned that verse by heart when I was a child.
The Wang family is large and dispersed in many different places. There may also be new
branches. Each branch has its own seniority arrangement in naming its members. Starting
from the eighty-sixth generation, our branch of the Jian Clan designated eight words
to be used as our middle names in each generation. They are: “Yuan 元 Heng 亨 Li 利
Zhen 貞 , Tian 天 Dao 道 Qi 其 Chang 常 .” This is the opening sentence of Yi Jing 易 經
[The Book of Change]. I changed the word Chang 常 to Shion 祥 [Shiang or Xiang depending
on regional Romanized transliteration] because we were up-rooted from Mainland China
and moved to Taiwan [and overseas]. My first grandson, the Ninety-third [93rd] Generation
Dan Shiang 丹 祥 used the name Shiang 祥 to commemorate this extraordinary relocation
to Taiwan [in 1949]. There are, of course, other ninety-third generation Wangs in other
parts of the world; they may have used the name Chang 常 as their middle names. They
also belong to the same generation with names such as 祥 Shion/Xiang/Shiang. This is
important to note for posterity.
In order to continue this naming tradition, I have designated another eight words for
naming our descendants: “Zhong 中 Zheng 正 He 和 Ping 平 , Ji 吉 An 安 Yong 永
Chang 昌 .”
Wang Jing An Tang 汪 敬 安 堂
Our old family house was next door to this Ying Yang Society 迎 陽 社 with a vegetable
field in between. In 1927 and 1928, my father [The Honorable 90th Generation Tian
Qi 天 祺 公 ] built a new house over the vegetable field and became the immediate next
door neighbor of the Ying Yang Society. There is a plaza in front of the Society building.
In the midst of the war with Japan [1937], I took my own family there. My father spent
considerable time on this plaza walking my son Qi Mo 其 模 around. [Perhaps rocking
him to sleep?]
On the Thirty-first Day of the Tenth Month of the Sixty-eighth Year of the Republic of
China [The Honorable] Dao Yuan 道 淵 noted these in Taipei, Taiwan.

More on Naming the Generations
The middle name designations are meant to
distinguish one generation from another in large
families with long histories. For the 93rd Generation
in the Taiwan Branch of the Jian Clan, my father, the
Honorable Dao Yuan 道 淵 公 changed the designed
word “chang” 常 to ”shion/shiang/xiang” 祥 and
moved the designated word to the last of a three
word name. This was to commemorate the family’s
extraordinary event of relocation to Taiwan.
scholar Wang Yang Ming 王 陽 明 [1472–1529] and his
writings. Ji 吉 Shi 士 [Director of the Hanlin Academy
翰 林 院 學 士 ] Yong 永 Chang 昌 are nice sounding
auspicious words.
These are the words to be used naming the next
eight generations 以 下 八 代 命 名 順 序 :
94th 大 95th 中 96th 至 97th 正
98th 吉 99th 士 100th 永 101st 昌
21
Grand Elder Dao Yuan selected eight more words but
later changed these designated middle names to:
Da Chung Zhi Zheng Ji Shi Yong Chang
大 中 至 正 吉 士 永 昌
The ninety-fourth [94th] generation started using the
word Da 大 for their middle names.
There are actually three different versions of what
Grand Elder Dao Yuan designated over time. The
92nd Chie/Qi 其 Generation brothers and sisters
decided to follow the last iteration. That is the version
that starts with the word Da 大 . Grand Elder Dao Yuan
道 淵 公 wrote them on the back of a yellow envelope
with a red pencil. A photograph of that is displayed
here. The circumstances surrounding that piece of
paper remain unclear, but the red pencil writings are
authentic the Honorable Dao Yuan’s handwriting.
The first four words Da 大 Chung 中 Zhi 至 Zheng 正
can be traced to the Ming 明 Dynasty [1368–1628 AD]
Families in Taiwan 台 灣 and Overseas
Just as significant when our ancestor The Honorable
Wang Che 徹 moved to south of the Yangtze River
and established the Jiang Nan Clan, the family’s move
to Taiwan in 1949 also started the Taiwan Branch
which included parts of the family overseas. This was
an equally important historic event in the history of
the Wang Family. The Honorable Dao Yuan would
theoretically be the First Generation Grand Elder
of this new branch. Grand Elder Dao Yuan was too
humble to assume that title, however. He decided to
continue the Jiang Nan Che 徹 Clan order of counting
the generations so as not to be separated from family
members in China and elsewhere in the world.
The Shion/Shiang/Xiang 祥 Generation remains as
the 93rd Generation of the Jiang Nan Clan of the
Hui Zhou Wang Family.

WANG FAMILY CHRONICLE
徽 州 Hui Zhou — 安 徽 Anhui Province
China is known for her five mountain ranges and three
major rivers. Hui Zhou is located at the foot of Hwang
Shan 黃 山 , one of the five major mountains. Poets and
artists admired Hwang Shan with poems, lyrics, and
great paintings making it a popular tourist attraction
throughout the ages. She Xian 歙 縣 is the district city
of Hui Zhou 徽 州 .
In the Chinese translation of the Lewis Carrol’s
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the omnipresent
“Cheshire Cat” was referred to as 歙 縣 貓 “She Xian
Mao” for their similar sounding. My father was quite
amused by that reference.
Hui Zhou is known as a source of good ink sticks
and stone ink-wells. We have some of them in our
Philadelphia house. Those Qing Dynasty ink sticks in
gift boxes were “discovered” in a Brooklyn New York
City used furniture store where Fon had an apartment
nearby. Grand Elder Dao Yuan told me many
interesting stories about harvesting ink-well stones
from a river bank outside of Hui Zhou.
My Grandfather, the 90th Generation Grand Elder
Tian Qi 天 祺 公 had a tea processing business in
Hui Zhou, primarily exporting to Europe through
a partnership in Shanghai, the Cun-Yu-He Tea
Company 春 裕 和 茶 莊 , featuring LingCun 臨 春 and
ZhengMei 珍 眉 brands. Grand Elder Tian Qi 天 祺 公
gathered tea leaves from growers in the neighboring
mountain, baked and fermented them into red tea
before packaging them for shipment to Shanghai.
There was also this story about how he improved the
baking process from two ovens, one on each side
of the stove, to a single pot configuration, sparing
the worker from hunching over the stove. Family
members also participated in the production and
management of the tea business.
Apparently, the tea business was doing well. My
grandfather the Honorable Tian Qi 天 祺 公 was able
to send his sons to attend colleges in cosmopolitan
Shanghai. He was even prepared to send my father
the Honorable Dao Yuan 道 淵 公 to Stanford Law
School after receiving his law degree from DaXia
University 大 夏 大 學 . But, as the war against Japanese
invasion broke out [1937] Grand Elder Dao Yuan
decided to forgo Stanford and joined the struggle
against the Japanese. Grandpa Tian Qi also was
able to build a spacious traditional style house that
became our ancestral home in Hui Zhou 徽 州
汪 敬 安 堂 .
My Grandfather always kept honey and cognac at
home for “medicinal reasons.” He used to send
people to Shanghai for the best of cognac on the
market, I was told. A bottle could be had for one
silver dollar, the equivalent of a monthly salary of a
mid-level civil servant. My father and I both inherited
that practice for the sake of family health.
These are the family anecdotes!

WANG FAMILY CHRONICLE
NINETY YEARS OF WANG JING AN TANG
汪 敬 安 堂 九 十 載
A traditional house is scheduled to be relocated
across town and become the featured space of the
School History Museum and Reception Hall of the She
Xian High School 歙 縣 中 學 校 史 館 . It will be the main
exhibition hall of the museum. This house was built in
the tradition of vernacular residential architecture in
this region: high walls, small windows, with a skywell
courtyard in the middle, fully reflecting the society
and cultural background at the time. This preservation
and adaptive reuse project is to preserve a house that
represents an important era of the region.
This house in Hui Zhou is Wang Jing-An-Tang 徽 州
汪 敬 安 堂 (The House of Respect and Tranquility) built
by our grandfather, the 90th Generation Honorable
Tian Qi 天 祺 公 in 1927 and completed in 1928 on the
piece of land between our old ancestral home and
the Rising Sun Society 迎 陽 社 . It is now where family
descendants call home.
Grandpa was in the tea business. He gathered tea
leaves from growers in nearby mountains, and baked,
fermented and packaged them for export through a
partnership in Shanghai. The tea business probably
did quite well. Grandpa was able to send his two sons
to Shanghai for high school and college education,
building this new house at the same time. As was
customary at that time, Grandpa, as the owner, was
responsible for procuring construction materials. In
addition to timber, stone, and other major items for
the construction, he looked for salvaged structural
parts and decorative components from old building
sites in the nearby countryside and reused them in
the new house. It is said that used materials bring
good luck to a new house. Craftsmen installed and
incorporated these salvaged components into the
fabric of the house, and made it more authentically
traditional looking with intricate wood and stone
carvings. It is a testimonial to Grandpa’s innovative
planning and the frugality of the people in the region
at that time.
The new house was built west of our old ancestral
home. It has a symmetrical layout following the
traditional house design in the Hui Zhou region. There
is a walled front yard as you walk in from the street
before you enter the main house. Inside, the entry
hall is flanked by side rooms, leading to a skywell
courtyard in the middle of the house. Beyond that,
the Ceremonial Reception Hall lies in the middle of
the main part of the house, facing south.
Typical Chinese timber construction did not use
triangulation in structural design. Columns and beams
were fitted together with tenons and mortises for
rigidity. The wood frame sits on stone foundations
and stone column bases. The weight of the tile roof
further stabilized the entire structure. Rooms are
divided by wooden partitions; some of them are
simply ornate lattice panels. No dropped ceiling
was employed; the floor boards of the second floor
are the ceilings of the first floor. There is a narrow
25
26
WANG FAMILY CHRONICLE
stairway to the second floor behind the Reception
Hall. The second floor has four rooms and side
galleries surrounding the “Skywell” 天 井 . This
“skywell” is an opening in the roof over the central
courtyard; it provides light and air to the interior of
the house. Rainwater from this roof opening collects
in the courtyard below.
Masonry curtain walls were built on all four sides of
this timber structure, providing privacy and protecting
the house from fire and unwanted intrusions. These
walls are surfaced with white lime plaster and capped
with dark gray tiles. The profile of the walls follows
the varying heights of the house. They are called
“horse head walls” because of the elaborately
decorated ends of carved bricks.
There are three parts of the house: the front entrance
hall with its flanking rooms; the skywell courtyard with
open galleries on both sides; and finally the main
Reception Hall flanked by its rooms. Second floor
spaces follow the layout of the first floor. The front of
the building mass is lower than the part in the back,
forming the undulating shape of the house exterior.
For security reasons, as is normal, there are only a few
very small windows on the outside masonry walls.
There is an exception from the tradition in our house,
however. My father, the 91st Generation Grand Elder
Dao Yuan 道 源 公 was going to school in Shanghai
at the time the new house was built. Having been
exposed to cosmopolitan Shanghai and seeing many
buildings with Western influence, he introduced
large windows to the façade of the house, contrary
to tradition. I was told that he made that change
directly with the master carpenter during his summer
break from school and returned to Shanghai without
reporting that change to our Grandpa. Grandpa only
discovered the large windows after they were built.
He was not angry, I was told, but was glad that his
son applied what he learned in Shanghai by way of
“applying Western techniques with Chinese culture as
the base.” There is no other such architectural sample
to be found in the immediate region.
Kitchen and accessory spaces are located outside of
these masonry walls, for reasons of fire segregation.
A masonry stove is still functional to this day. There is
a small vegetable garden behind the kitchen. All told,
the old ancestral home with its yard, the front yard
of the new house, the vegetable garden and the
plaza in front of the Rising Sun Society form a series
of open spaces around our house. There is also a
small irrigation ditch in front of the property, fulfilling
a good fungsui requirement: a mountain in the
back and water in the front.
Interior finishes and furnishings are simple and
traditional with many carved wood panels and lattice
windows distributed throughout the house. Exposed
structural members complete the spatial relationship.
Family maxim plaques and ancestor portraits hanging
in the Reception Hall, with auspicious writings in
carved wood panels, indicate the presence of a
cultured family.
This house, in the past ninety years, experienced
much turmoil: During the war against Japan when
Hui Zhou was frequently bombed; some decorative
wood panels and carved bricks were damaged during
the Cultural Revolution; one can still see the red
paint traces of revolutionary slogans painted on
the front wall.
Our great grandparents and grandparents spent
their senior years in this house. Our father and uncle
lived in the house in their youth before they left for
education and employment. Aunt Ying-Ho 汪 銀 河
took over responsibility for the household, raised
the young and cared for the old until she passed
away in 1988. Cousin Cheng Bang-Zheng 程 邦 正 and
his children then continued living in the house and
took care of the maintenance of the property. Our
ancestral house has survived to this day because of
their efforts.
Now, the neighboring She Xian High School is
planning to expand, and our house is in the way. To
support education in our hometown, we arranged
with the high school and with county government
to dismantle the house and relocate it to a site
just inside the main entrance of the school, and to
incorporate it into the school’s History Museum.
Members of the Wang family, the descendants of the
Wang Jing An Tang, will have a place to call home,
to visit and cherish the memory of our ancestors.
This house, the home of Wang Jing An Tang of Hui
Zhou, will therefore continue serving an important
role in our hometown for generations to come.
