NUH Youth Service tackles NET Tram challenge to
raise money for Nottingham Children’s Hospital
A group of young patients and volunteers from NUH Youth Service successfully
tackled a unique fundraising challenge to raise money for the Big Appeal for
Nottingham Children’s Hospital.
The young people, aged 13 to 22, visited all
51 stops on Nottingham’s tram network
over a single day, taking a selfie at each one
and raising money for the Big Appeal in the
process.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of NUH
Youth Service, which is based within the
Children’s Hospital at the Queen’s Medical
Centre. The service, which is supported by
Nottingham Hospitals Charity, helps young
patients aged 11 to 21 who are being treated
at the Children’s Hospital.
Callum Sharpe, 21, a member
of the Youth Service, said: “I
took part because it’s a chance
to raise money for the simply
brilliant NUH Youth Service, which
has done so much for me and lots of other
people over the last twenty years.”
To find out more about the Big Appeal, which
aims to raise £4m to help young patients at
Nottingham’s Children’s Hospital, to make a
donation or get fundraising ideas, please visit
Robin’s Big World
Record!
With your help, on 7th May we
attempted to break the Guinness World
Record for the largest gathering of
people dressed as Robin Hood!
Robin’s Big World Record, in aid of the
Big Appeal for Nottingham Children’s
Hospital, was a huge success, with over
a thousand people coming along to
enjoy a family fun day and take part in
the World Record attempt.
Sadly, due to record-breaking
temperatures in the World Record attempt
area, some participants understandably
had to pull out of the event, leaving us
around 100 people short of breaking the
record. However, we’d still like to thank
everyone who came along to raise a huge
amount of awareness and money for the Big
Appeal. You’re all heroes!
Big Appeal for
Nottingham
Children’s
Hospital:
latest news!
Big Appeal latest:
the Big iMRI Appeal
As part of our Big Appeal for
Nottingham Children’s Hospital,
we have launched a campaign
to raise £1.2m to help young
patients who have been
diagnosed with brain tumours.
The Big iMRI Appeal is raising money to fund a
special MRI machine to be used during children’s
brain tumour surgery. This will help surgeons
remove as much of the tumour as possible – giving
children the best possible chance of being cured first
time, and preventing young children undergoing a
separate general anaesthetic for a post-operative
MRI the next day, which currently means an
agonising 24-hour wait for parents to find out if the
operation was a success.
Partnering with the University of Nottingham, the
appeal will help children like five-year-old Mia
Morgan (pictured) and her family, who are supporting
the Big iMRI Appeal after Mia was diagnosed
with a brain tumour and successfully treated at
Nottingham Children’s Hospital.
If you’d like to have fun and raise funds for the Big Appeal at the same time, why not sign up
to one of our upcoming events? Take a look at our events on pages 8 and 9 or visit our online
events page at www.nottinghamhospitalscharity.org.uk/events
Remembering lost loved ones
Our brave supporter Craig Renton has raised more
than £25,000 in memory of his wife, Heidi Renton, and
their daughter, Isabella, through a tribute fund set up
in their honour.
Heidi sadly died in August last year, moments before the
couple’s daughter Isabella was delivered. Tragically, Isabella
also passed away just 15 hours after being born.
Heidi worked at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
as a radiographer, and since her death, Craig has continued
to honour her incredible legacy by raising funds for the
Nottingham Radiotherapy Centre.
Becky Cole, a Radiotherapy Team Manager who worked with
Heidi, said: “The support we have had from Craig has been
incredible – he has taken part in so many events and is an
inspiration to all of us in the department”.
Our thanks, also, to all those who have given so kindly to
Craig’s tribute fund in memory of Heidi and Isabella, in support
of the wonderful work of the Nottingham Radiotherapy Centre.
Local hair and beauty salon
raises thousands!
A local hair and beauty salon has raised over £12,000 for
breast cancer research at Nottingham’s hospitals over
the past six years.
Alison Madge, from Hucknall, was treated for breast cancer
in 2009 by Professor Stephen Chan at the Nottingham Breast
Institute, at the City Hospital. At Oasis Hair “We ‘go pink’
every October to raise money for Professor Chan’s research”
said Alison. “Last year we raised almost £4,000.”
Bethan Wright, from Solutions for Accounting and CRM, who
took part in last year’s event, said: “It gives you a fantastic
sense of achievement. The atmosphere is very positive with
lots of encouragement from spectators and passers-by.”
Fundraising hall of fame
Fundraising hall of fame
Huge thanks to Ann Rogers and
friends who have supported the
Charity for several years, and most
recently raised over £3,000 for the
children’s cancer ward at Nottingham
Children’s Hospital.
A huge thank you to the Swift family who
raise money each year through the Nuthall
Christmas Lights, where they decorate their
home and ask for donations from visitors.
Including last year’s total of £13,100, the family
has so far raised a phenomenal £100,000 over
the years, which is split between Hayward
House and When You Wish Upon A Star. Thank
you so much for your ongoing support!
A big thank you to Pat and David Bassett
and their friends and family who have
supported Nottingham’s hospitals
through an annual fundraising walk, for
more than 25 years. Last year’s walk
raised almost £2,500 to support prostate
cancer patients.
Huge thanks to the team at
Specsavers at Cirrus House in
Nottingham who raised more than
£14,000 for the Big Appeal by holding
a host of fundraising events over the
past two years. Thank you so much!
Well done to sixth form pupils at Nottingham
Emmanuel School who raised over £450 for the
children’s cancer ward through a gruelling rowing
challenge!
A big thank you to
Bindhu Saraswathy
who raised over £2,500
for the Critical Care
Unit in memory of her
father, by taking part in
a sponsored skydive!
Thank you to James Leckey whose family has
raised thousands of pounds over the years, most
recently giving £700 to ward F21 at the QMC after
he underwent a liver transplant several years ago.
The money was raised with the help of Mr Leckey’s
parents-in-law, Jean and Barry Parsons. Mr Leckey
has since gone on to compete in the British Transplant
Games – winning a gold in volleyball! Congratulations!
Special thanks to Ali Ashgar
who has supported the Charity
for several years, raising £3,800
through the Ali Akbar Welfare
Trust. The money was raised
through football tournaments in
memory of his son, Ali Akbar, who
sadly lost his battle with cancer at
the age of 27.
Fundraising hall of fame
Fundraising hall of fame
Well done to Olivia Jenkins who has so
far raised over £1,500 for the Children’s
Development Centre in memory of three-yearold
Esmae Betteridge, a family friend who sadly
passed away in 2016. Olivia has run, swum and
baked to raise the money, and plans to continue
fundraising throughout 2018. What a superstar!
Well done to Sue Ratcliffe and her friends and
family who raised £3,000 for Barclay Ward and
our Cancer Research Fund. Sue raised money
in her local community, while her friends and
family climbed Mount Snowdon on her behalf!
What a wonderful team effort, thank you!
Thank you to Yu Energy who raised over £1,400 for
the Big Appeal for Nottingham Children’s Hospital.
A special thank you to the
Laskowski family and their
friends, who have raised £3,000
for children’s cancer ward E39
to thank them for the care their
son Kacper received there.
A very special thank you to the friends of Hannah Curr who
held a 24-hour Bon Jovi karaoke marathon for Hannah,
raising over £4,300 for the Nottingham Breast Institute.
Hannah, who has previously supported the Charity as a
volunteer, was diagnosed with a rare type of breast cancer
which doctors believed had spread to her brain. We were
delighted to hear that a repeat brain scan showed no sign of
cancer, and Hannah is on the road to recovery.
Well done to Rempstone Traction Club
who raised £3,500 for the Big Appeal
during their annual Rempstone Steam
and Country Show. The money was
raised in memory of budding engine
driver 14-year-old John Tomlinson,
who was treated on the Paediatric
Intensive Care Unit before he sadly
passed away last year.
Huge thanks to Just The
Tonic comedy club who
raised over £2,000 for our
Zephyr’s family bereavement
support centre, by holding a
special fundraising comedy
night. Thank you so much for
your support.
Big thanks to the organisers of the Waterfront Festival
who support the Wolfson Cystic Fibrosis Centre each
year – last year raising more than £1,700. Thank you!
