Health system
Liechtenstein has a universal health care system
with decentralized, free market elements through
mandated health insurance coverage for every
person residing in the country
Broadly speaking, individuals shop around for
their own private health insurance plan, known by
the abbreviation 'OKP', with government registered
and regulated companies. Various supplementary
services with varying private contribution rates
exist for those with special healthcare needs.
The basic plans cover specialist treatments from
neighboring nations such as Switzerland and
Austria, though patients share some costs. Regular
health check-ups with general practitioners are
covered completely, with no out-of-pocket
expenses .

" Educat i on
syst em "
The school system in was
continually developed
throughout the 20th
century. From 1937
onwards the country had its
own grammar school The
Marists, a Catholic religious
congregation who were not
welcome in Germany at the
time, received permission
to set up a grammar school
in Vaduz, the Collegium
Marianum
The constitution
stipulates that the state is
responsible for schooling
and the supervision of the
entire education system.
Private tuition is possible
but must also be
monitored by the state
authorities. The first
recorded mention of
schools in Liechtenstein
can be traced back to 1619
and the "Schulhaus" in
Vaduz.
Primary education
lasts for five years.
Lower secondary
education is provided
by three types of
schools: Oberschule (4
years) , Realschule (4
years), and Gymnasium
(3 years). A lower
secondary school
Certificate is issued to
those who have
successfully completed
the four-year
programme. Students in
the Gymnasium have to
attend an additional
year in one of the other
schools or in the upper
level of the Gymnasium.
Upper secondary
education is provided
by the Freiwilliges 10.
Schuljahr, the
Gymnasium and the
Berufsmittelschule. The
voluntary 10th school
year seeks to provide
young people with the
best preparation for
their vocational and
personal future. In
addition to the core
subjects, 3 different
option-groups are
offered: 1. Languages 2.
Information technology
and design 3. School and
social learning. After
passing a final
examination, students
obtain a school-leaving
certificate. The
Gymnasium offers 5
different option-groups:
1. Languages including
Latin 2. Modern
languages including a
third and fourth living
language 3. Art, music
and pedagogy 4.
Business and law 5.
Maths and natural
sciences. At the end of
the Gymnasium
Oberstufe, students take
the Matura examination
(final school leaving
examination), which
entitles them to enter
universities in both
Switzerland and Austria
