On a beach called
Mon Repo, turtle hatchlings
followed the moonlight
into the ocean.

The last egg hatched
just as the sun rose
over the sand dunes.
The hatchling followed
the sunlight into
the hot dunes.

Dune grass tangled
around it's flipper.
Something blocked
the turtles way.

It was the nose
belonging to
a hungry dog.

The dog belonged
to a boy.
''DROP!'' said the boy.

said the boy.
''Turtles are good
tucker but I like
Vegemite better!''
The boy put Lucky Turtle
into the ocean.

Unluckily ...
two greedy seagulls
were watching from above.

the Lucky Turtle and
flew up into the sky.

''Mine!'' screeched
the seagull. Down fell
the Lucky Turtle.

into the waiting claw
of a hungry crab.

A crashing wave
scared the crab.
It let Lucky Turtle go.

How Lucky was the Lucky Turtle?
Only 1 in 1000 turtle hatch lings survive
to be an adult. Mon Repo is a beach
near Bundaberg in Queensland, Australia.
Mon Repo means 'my home.' A
female turtle returns to the same beach
she was born to lay her eggs. Turtles live
to around 80 years. Very lucky turtle's
have lived as tong as 150 years!
