WELCOME TO THE
SECOND EDITION OF RESALTI
Welcome to the second edition of Resalti.
As I write this piece I am struggling to
comprehend how quickly the first term
has passed. It only seems like yesterday
that we were welcoming everyone back
from the summer break. I guess the old
adage of time passing quickly when you
are having fun must be true!
Although, I have enjoyed the numerous
different events that have occurred this
term – which range from visiting guest
speakers to primary assemblies and from
watching our sports team, through to our
MUN conference, one of my favourite
days is undoubtedly the National Day
celebrations. I am always amazed by the
colours, beauty and splendour of the
traditional costumes worn by our female
students and staff. In addition, I am often
left in awe at the poetry produced by our
students that is always delivered with
such passion. And finally, the Az’zi,
performed by our senior boys,
always lifts the hairs on the back
of my neck. Although all schools in
Oman celebrate this special day, I
am certain few do it as well as us.
Continued
from page 1:
In the last edition of Resalti, I
highlighted some of the construction
work that had started or was planned
for the near future. Well, I am pleased
to report that we have made significant
progress in a number of areas over
the last couple of months. These
developments include:
- The construction of a new
400m running track that meets
international standards. This should be
ready for the beginning of next term
and will be an excellent addition to our
sports facilities.
- Work has started on the
extension of the cafeteria. The old
storage area behind the kitchens has
been completely demolished and
construction of the new facility should
start over the holidays. We hope
construction will be complete in time
for the 2019-2020 school year.
- The construction of a new
suite of primary admin offices has
also started. These will be located
where the school store sat previously
and, once complete, will allow all the
primary management team to be
located in the same area.
- The construction of a new
mosque has also started. The old
one has been demolished and will be
replaced with one that is more fitting
for a school of our status.
beginning of this month, CIS reported
that they are pleased with the progress
we have made and our next report is
not due until early 2020.
Looking forward, we will start next
term with the IGCSE and IB mock
examinations. These are extremely
important for our Year 11 and 13
students as they will give them, and the
school, an indication of how well they
are doing in the lead-up to the final
examinations in May and June. I would
like to wish all of these students good
luck in those examinations and I hope
they use the holidays wisely to revise
and prepare properly.
Finally, I would like to finish this edition
by wishing everyone a wonderful
winter break and I look forward to
seeing everyone in 2019!!
PRIMARY NEWS
STEM learning has been around
in education for quite some time
and people are now advocating for
STEAM… Including the Arts in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Maths.
Another movement that has rapidly
gaining in popularity in education is
the maker movement. Makerspace
is not only a constructivist and
constructionist environment but
an educational concept as well! A
makerspace presents readily-available
materials that can act as a provocation
for inquiry, as well as modern
technology and items to invent with.
Here at The Sultan’s School we strive
to stay at the forefront of modern
technology and best practice. It is with
this in mind that we have taken our
first steps to introduce STEM/STEAM
to our students. Over the course of
this year a lot has happened. Work
continues to be done in the dome to
turn this into a functional Makerspace
suitable for STEM activities. Exciting
new after school activities have also
run for the first time with more still yet
to start!
Year 4 and 5 students have been
building and programming simple
robots in the Lego WeDo 2.0 club. This
club is designed with collaboration
in mind, and introduces them to
science, computational thinking, and
engineering principles in a fun and
engaging way.
Another fantastic addition to the
ECA programme at TSS this year is
Raspberry Jam. Whilst sounding like a
breakfast condiment, Raspberry Jam
is actually a club that introduces Year
6 students to Physical Computing.
Using Raspberry Pi’s (small yet
powerful computers) and electronic
components, students learn how to
connect to physical systems in the
real world. So far they have enjoyed
working with LEDs and buttons and
are looking forward to moving on to
sensors and motors later this year.
This club also encourages students to
make the transition from block based
computer programming languages
like Scratch and Blockly to text based
languages like Python.
In Term 2 the Lego Mindstorms
Club will run for our older students.
Mindstorms are the next step up
from WeDo 2.0 and will to motivate
students to plan, predict, test, problemsolve,
analyze, and explore, all while
deepening their STEM learning and
developing career-readiness skills. We
will also see Formula 1 Ethara in Oman
for the very first time. This exciting
challenge from F1 in Schools, Abu
Dhabi will turn Year 6 students into
budding race car designers. In teams
they will design and create their own F1
cars in order to see whose car will be
the fastest down a 25 metre track.
This is just the beginning so watch this
space…
Mr. Spencer
Head of Primary ICT and Computing
During the Primary STEM Club ECA, a
group of Year 5 and 6 students have
been using the K’nex construction
materials. K’nex is a unique
construction system, with colourcoded
pieces called ‘connectors’ and
‘rods’ that let you build anything from
simple flat models to large, strong 3-D
constructions.
The sessions included challenges,
where the students were able to use
their imaginations to create different
models. In addition, some students
constructed fairground rides. It was
great to see the students having fun
and working creatively.
MESSAGE FROM
MR. PAUL
It is hard to believe that the first term of the 2018-2019 school year is coming
keep up to date through our many
forms of electronic communication.
Please ensure that you have our app
The Extended Essay is an in-depth study of a focused topic normally selected from one of the student’s six subjects.
It is intended to promote academic research and writing skills, providing students with an opportunity to engage in
formally presented structured writing.
IGCSE NEWS
‘With our very long Term One finally drawing to a close our Year 10 students can rejoice in completing a considerable share
of their courses. Having chosen their options wisely the students have settled in well and, with the exception of a few small
tweaks, can now focus on learning the subjects deeply.
On the 5th December they also witnessed our Awards Ceremony for the IGCSE Class of 2018. For the first time in a while we
had not one but two students achieving straight A/A* grades as well as a number of other exceptionally good results worthy
of special celebration including the award for the highest mark in Economics in Oman. This should, no doubt, inspire all of our
students to achieve excellence and be a cause for further celebration at The Sultan’s School.
‘Real excellence does not come
cheaply. A certain price must be
paid in terms of practice, patience,
and persistence – natural ability not
withstanding’ – Stephen Covey’s advice
is especially relevant to our Year 11
students as they begin (in case they
haven’t already!) their preparations for
the mock examinations in January. It
is crunch time for these students, the
past has shown that the students who
prepare well for the mocks go on to do
well in the actual finals in May.
As the IGCSE coordinator the greatest
pleasure in my work is witnessing the
effort of individual students pushing
themselves to grow and wrestle with
the difficulties of success at IGCSE
study and then surprising everyone
and especially themselves with what
they achieve. It is with this vein of
thought that I hope every student
makes full use of the time available
to make strong progress and that
they are supported in every way by
family and friends. Rest is necessary
but the winter break and study leave
is where many students will decide if
they are aiming for excellence or, more
accurately, whether they will trade
comfort for excellence at the price of
practice, patience, and persistence.’
things I never thought I would have
the time and effort to do. I’ve gone
through every emotion but the end
results were unbelievable. I became
more confident and I feel proud of
myself for having that feeling. The
course made us a whole big family
and made us closer and I am very
proud to say that this family is one
of the best families anyone can
ever have. I wish people can have
a chance to feel how we felt in this
course.”
Fatma Al Hammadi
“The course made me realise that
I can be more self-dependent
and more responsible.” Warith Al
Mahrooqi
“This experience with Outward
Bound Oman has been wonderful.
We enhanced the hidden sides of
ourselves and tried new exciting
activities. This trip has brought
out our true selves also made us
become more independent and able
to appreciate everything, as well as
everyone around us.”
“I was a little bit anxious before the
course that I might not complete the
course and especially the hiking, but
I overcame the anxiety and the fear
and really enjoyed the challenges.”
Ahmed Al Mahrabi
“The Outward Bound Oman course
was an overwhelming experience.
We got to do things that we usually
wouldn’t do on a daily basis like
hiking, and that was probably the
best part about the trip because we
got to challenge ourselves and work
a lot as a team.Overall this adventure
made me more independent and
I got closer to my friends and
teachers. I would love to do it again
anytime soon.”
Amnah Al Hammadi
“The outward bound trip was the
best thing I’ve ever experienced.
It was a trip for our strengths
and weaknesses to be displayed
and showed us how we can all
work together to reach our goals.
Everyone became closer to each
other and discovered things about
others that we never knew. I learned
how to be patient and independent
and how to show my confidence and
leadership by leading, motivating
and helping others when the need
arose. This course showed us how
important everyone is and how we
should appreciate everything around
us. It brought out our energetic,
helpful and hard-working side, our
true selves were shown and who
we actually are. This trip was a life
changing experience and I would
love to do it again.”
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
At the end of November, twentythree
boys including sixteen
from the Middle School and
three staff flew from Muscat to Phuket
in Thailand to participate in the British
International School Phuket Soccer
Sevens, an annual competition, which
attracts leading schools from the entire
Asian region including ten countries,
forty schools and nearly 1500 students.
This was the first time that a team
from not only Oman but the entire
GCC region had ever taken part in
what is one of the premier school
football competitions in the world. The
standard of football in this competition
is the highest that the boys will have
ever seen and we knew this would be a
difficult task.
in the last few seconds, resulting in
a disappointing conclusion for both
teams.
Over the next two days as the boys
acclimatised to not only the weather
and playing conditions but also the
standard of play, which was very high,
results improved and by the end of
the competition both teams had been
successful, particularly the Under 15’s
who missed out on a semi-final place
by losing on penalties to a team they
were beating with less than 10 seconds
to go in their quarter-final.
So a 5th place for our boys, which
considering the standard of football
and the fact this was their first
time in the competition, is a great
achievement and bodes well for the
future. Our teams showed that they
have both the ability to succeed and
a willingness to battle when it really
counted and should be pleased
with their efforts. The coaches were
extremely proud of the boys as were
the significant number of parents who
had made the trip to support us.
Our thanks go to the organising staff,
coaches and teachers who made this
happen, as well as Bank Dhofar for
their generous sponsorship. We are
already looking forward to next year’s
trip.
After twelve hours of travelling, we
arrived in Thailand and on Friday
began our games. It proved to be
a difficult start with the Under 13’s
facing the previous year’s winners
and our Under 15’s conceding a goal
BOARDING
REPORT
T
The boarding programme
continues to be busy as we
approach the end of Term
One. A highlight this term was the
community service trip to Luzugh
where senior scholars, some day
students and staff worked to
restore the village falaj. This was a
continuation of a partnership with
the village commenced last year,
with the aim of maintaining the falaj
and demonstrating the viability of
aquaponics and solar water pumps
to ensure that the falaj system is
sustainable. The group worked hard
alongside community members
weeding pathways and cleaning
irrigation channels - then sat down to a
communal meal.
National Day celebrations in the
school provided an opportunity for
the scholars to demonstrate pride in
their country. Senior boarders took a
leading role in the parade through the
school grounds and at assembly. All
Year 6 participated in singing ‘Because
it’s Oman’ and ‘Qaboos’ while other
boys read poetry, lead prayer and
danced the Az’zi.
Scholars continue to support school
activities with two boys taking part in
the boys football trip to Thailand and
more participating in the TSS Model
United Nations conference.
At the end of term the gap students
who have been assisting in boarding
will depart. Ms Hanna, Ms Rhiannon,
Mr George and Mr Adam have been
wonderful with the boys and their
Arabic language skills made their
impact all the more special. We thank
them and wish them all the best for
the future.
