Milani The Village of Orland Park’s community events calendar fills quickly once all of the summer schedules are announced. Memorial Day Weekend starts the summer fun in Orland Park, beginning the Village’s packed season of events, music, festivals and more. “We officially welcome summer to Orland Park Memorial Day Weekend,” said Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau. “The Village’s Centennial Park Aquatic Center will open for the season and we gather as a community to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice at the village’s Memorial Day Ceremony.” The names of veterans who have been added to Orland Park’s memorial are announced as each veteran stands and waves to the applauding audience. Friends and family stand for those being posthumously honored. Orland Park’s ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 27, at the Veterans Memorial, 14700 S. Ravinia Ave. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Orland Park’s Market at the Park returns from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday evenings, May 30-July 25. Vendors and products include farmers, artisans, home décor, jewelry, antiques, ready to eat food, food trucks and more. The market is held at Crescent Park, at 9705 W. 142nd St., adjacent to the 143rd Street Train Station. “Orland Park has a rich history of community events that bring everyone together,” said Trustee Jim Dodge, chair of the Village’s Recreation and Parks Committee. “What’s nice about the Village’s events is people running into friends and neighbors they haven’t seen in a while, seeing people from when their kids were younger. The reunion aspect of the Village’s events creates a great community atmosphere for residents of all ages.” Market at the Park also includes different food trucks each week, free lawn games, beer and wine for purchase, and will feature live entertainment each week from 6-7:30 p.m. The Village of Orland Park Arts Commission will host Chalk Champ Artist Shaun Hays at the market from 4-8 p.m. on June 6. Orland Park’s Cruise Night is held during the market. Car and motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to bring their rides to Crescent Park. There is no charge to participate and spots are available on a first come first served basis. There is no market on Independence Day, July 4. Orland Park’s summer events also include: Orland Park Night with the Chicago White Sox on July 2; the Veterans Liberty Run/Walk July 3; Independence Day Celebration July 4; Concerts at Crescent Park June 23 and July 21; the Taste of Orland Park Aug. 2-4; Night Out Against Crime Aug. 6; the Labor Day Concert at Centennial Park West on Sept. 1; and the Orland Park Veterans Golf Classic on Sept. 10. We have many events planned for this summer, so start making your plans now to enjoy all that Lockport has to offer First, the City of Lockport will kick off summer with its annual Old Canal Days Festival to be held June 13-16 in downtown Lockport. This familyfriendly event starts Thursday when the carnival comes to town. On Friday evening, we will have a parade followed by rockin’ entertainment in the main tent. Saturday and Sunday will offer a huge craft show with more than 100 vendors, live bands in the beer/wine tent, food trucks, bingo, car show, magic show, petting zoo, Lock 1 tours, new trolley tours, cemetery tours, history exhibits, antique appraisals and vendors, worship service, bean bag tournament, craft beer tasting, and much more. In addition to Old Canal Days, the city will offer a variety of events in downtown Lockport, including our Cruisin’ Into Lockport Classic Car Show on Monday evenings, and Friday Nights with Abe at the Lincoln Landing. Both events offer live entertainment, as well as drinks and food available for purchase. Furthermore, be sure to save the date for the fifth Annual Comicopolis Comic and Fandom Con event from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 27, where the first 500 attendees will receive free swag bags. If you’re a film buff, the Summer Art Series Committee is introducing its first ever Midwest Waterways Short Film Festival. Come enjoy this summerlong event in the Roxy Theater, a newly restored art deco venue in the heart of Lockport, Illinois’ historic downtown. Films will cover five genres on the following dates: • July 11 – Drama • July 25 – Comedy • Aug. 8 – Horror • Aug. 22 – Documentary • Sept. 12 – Sci-fi or Animated • Oct. 5 – Best of Fest Aside from the events mentioned above, the Summer Art Series Committee has partnered with other organizations to offer programs and art experiences throughout the summer. For instance, the Illinois State Museum’s Rocked & Rolled exhibit ingeniously pairs rock stars with moon rocks and meteorites. It’s a one-ofa-kind exhibit that you must experience this summer, which runs from May 1-Oct. 6. Also, you can have fun this summer seeking out the giant picture frames strategically placed throughout the downtown. Once you find them, take a selfie or a group picture in these frames to be a part of the Picture Perfect challenge. Your best photo can win a $25 gift card to one of the restaurants in town. Four gift cards will be given away each month for the best photos taken in one of the frames. No professional photographers. You must be 18 years or older to enter the competition. Finally, this summer you will see many creatively designed Adirondack chairs displayed throughout town. This is because the Summer Art Series Committee partnered with Trinity Services, Inc to offer businesses the opportunity to purchase handmade chairs constructed by Trinity Services Woodworks. Then, in August, these chairs will be auctioned to the public. Trinity Services, Inc is a 68-year-old, nonsectarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children and adults with developmental disabilities and mental illness flourish, and live full and abundant lives.
