PERFORMERS
& LECTURERS
LES ARNOLD AND DAZZLE present a satirical look at
every stuffed-shirt magician you’ve ever seen and the assistant
you wished you hadn’t. Dazzle’s style is over the top, while
Les attempts to be the ultimate in understated elegance with
his pencil-thin mustache and floor-length cape. The magic is
solid but the characters are comically unstable, resulting in a
funhouse ride of laughs and gasps of astonishment.
Les Arnold and Dazzle
JON ARMSTRONG is best known for his world-class
magical talent and humor; managing to be actually funny,
not just magician funny. Jon began honing both skills when
he was hired as Disney World’s resident magician at age
twenty. He continued to perfect them as a recurring headliner
at Caesar’s Magical Empire. He has since performed in over
thirty countries, amazed Kathy Lee on the Today Show, been
dubbed the most original act by Penn and Teller, and fielded
protestations of love from Jay Leno on The Tonight Show. Jon
hopes you laugh out loud, are amazed by his skills, and most of
all, feel like you made a new friend.
Jon Armstrong
MATT BAKER specializes in close-up card magic but also
performs parlor magic and mentalism. Mike Powers says:
“Matt Baker has repeatedly fooled me badly. His plots are
clear-cut and appealing and his methods are diabolical.” He
has performed twice at the invitation-only FFFF Closeup
Convention in Batavia, New York, and has won multiple
awards for his magic, including Greater Atlanta Magician of
the Year. Last year, he recorded a Penguin Live Act and spent
four days studying with Juan Tamariz at his home in Spain.
Matt’s innovative routines have been featured in publications
such as Genii and The Linking Ring, and he recently published
his first book of original magic, The Buena Vista Shuffle Club.
Matt Baker
BANACHEK is described as the cream of the crop when
it comes to entertainers. His talents are so incredible that
he has fooled scientists into believing he possesses psychic
powers. Performers such as Penn & Teller, James Randi, and
David Blaine seek his performing expertise. The Association
for the Promotion of Campus Activities dubbed him Campus
Performer of the Year two years in a row, and he was named
the top Campus Novelty Act in 2000. He has also received
the coveted Psychic Entertainers Creativity award for his
contributions and inventions in the world of mentalism.
Stephen Bargatze
STEPHEN BARGATZE is a rare talent among entertainers. His
genuine personality endears him to any audience, and he quickly
develops a strong, positive relationship with the crowd. No longer
merely spectators, audiences find themselves caught up in the comedy
and amazement of Stephen’s zany performance. He sticks with
direct, simple effects that are easy for the audience to understand.
His personal story of overcoming an alcoholic home life as well as a
childhood accident that left him with a speech impediment touches
men and women on an emotional level. Stephen has performed for
numerous national and worldwide corporations such as Kroger, MCA
Records, Pepsi, Sprint, MADD, United Parcel Service, Vanderbilt
University, and the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans football
teams.
Robert Baxt
ROBERT BAXT has won both first place in the I.B.M. Stage
Contest (Lance Burton handed him the trophy and Robert claims it
still has his DNA on it), and a FISM trophy for Comedy. He makes
his home in Los Angeles. As an actor, he played the lawyer partner
to Jason Segel in the eighth season of CBS’s How I Met Your Mother.
He is most proud of the fact that he has never had a real job, only ever
making his living in show business.
Buster Balloon
BUSTER BALLOON is an award-winning balloon artist and
children’s entertainer who has taught at balloon, magic, and children’s
entertainers conferences all over the world, including MAGIC Live!,
Jeff McBride’s Magic & Mystery School, and the American Clown
Academy. His original balloon designs, routines, and magic effects
have also appeared in many industry publications. But his proudest
moment is still the time he ate an entire box of Cap’n Crunch by
himself in one sitting.
Bizarro
BIZZARO, the Optical Illusionist, strives to prove that “normal” is
just the setting on a dryer. He has performed from coast to coast
and appeared on FOX, NBC, America’s Got Talent, CW’s Masters of
Illusion, Travel Channel’s Extreme Conventions, and even Showtime
at the Apollo. He is a regular performer at the Magic Castle in
Hollywood, California. He also creates and sells original magic.
His creations have been featured on Ellen, The Late, Late Show,
The Carbonaro Effect, Justin Willman’s Magic for Humans, Unicorn
Wednesday, and Syfy’s Wizard Wars. He specializes in fabricating
magic for other entertainers, including David Copperfield and
Gallagher, and is a creative director and lecturer.
Les Bubb
LES BUBB, Britain’s noisiest mime, is a physical comedian who has
thrilled audiences live and on television all over the planet. Les has
been described as anything from a “high-speed clown” to a “puppet of
God!” But with the dynamics of a cartoon, kitsch of a Casio, timing
of a Rolex, and even while defying gravity, Les retains an undeniable
humanity (well, almost!). He starred in his own BBC children’s
television series Hubbub, and even though he’s the only non-magician
in Vaudeville 3000, he’s the only one with credits in the Harry Potter
movies!
LANCE BURTON became the very first magician to be
awarded the Gold Medal for Excellence in Stage Magic
from the International Brotherhood of Magicians in 1980.
Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Lance Burton burst
onto the national stage on October 28, 1981, with his first
appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He
also appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno, The View, The World’s Greatest Magic, and
Hollywood Squares. In 1996 his first TV special, Lance Burton
Master Magician: The Legend Begins, aired on NBC. While
successful on television, his greatest accomplishments have
been in live performance with an astounding 15,000 shows in
his thirty-year career. Lance Burton Master Magician, which
opened at the Monte Carlo Hotel in 1996, ran fourteen years
with 5,000 performances for over five million fans. Lance
Burton recently made his debut as a feature film director
with Billy Topit Master Magician, which has won six awards,
including Best Family Film, at the Wild Rose Independent
Film Festival in Des Moines, Iowa.
Lance Burton
RUDY COBY is the “Coolest Magician on Planet Earth.”
He has performed his live show in over one hundred
countries, and has created and starred in television programs
around the world for major broadcasters, including the BBC
and Fox. He vanished from the world of magic for ten years
for mysterious reasons. (Rumor has it he entered a witness
protection program and became Marilyn Manson’s roommate
and creative collaborator.) But now he’s back in his laboratory
in Las Vegas and planning world domination. He is excited
to be here in Scottsdale for the (near) thirtieth anniversary of
Vaudeville 3000.
Rudy Coby
DAVID DAVINCI is not a magician, not just an illusionist,
but a thrill-seeking, mind-bending master of prestidigitation
who creates an alternate world of fascination with gravitydefying
hair and tight pants (required). Prepare for mindboggling
illusions, seamlessly fused with exotic parrots that
materialize from thin air. You’ll laugh, you’ll cheer, your jaw
will hit the floor as David DaVinci presents his interpretation
of the age-old art of magic and illusions.
SHAWN FARQUHAR has been entertaining audiences
around the globe for over two decades. His magic has been
seen on shows like the X-Files and Highlander, in movies
like Spooky House and The Fly II. He has appeared on Ellen,
and is a two-time fooler on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Shawn
offers a fast-paced, audience participation experience you
will not soon forget. The Canadian Association of Magicians
awarded Shawn the Magician of the Year in 2003 and 2010;
the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians awarded him
the Grand Prix D’Honneur; the International Brotherhood
David DaVinci
8
Shawn Farquhar

of Magicians awarded him first place in both Stage and
Close-up, making him the only magician in history to win
both world championships; and the Olympics of Magic in
Beijing, China, awarded him the highest award in magic: the
Grand Prix World Champion of Magic in 2009. He served
as International President for the 2014–2015 term of office.
John Ferrentino
JOHN FERRENTINO has appeared on over fifty
television shows on HBO, VH1, Showtime, A&E, and the
Comedy Channel, and was a regular guest on Fox’s Comic
Strip Live for five years. He was the opening act for Crosby,
Stills, & Nash and has performed around the world on every
major cruise line. He is also a regular performer at the worldfamous
Magic Castle in Hollywood. John makes his home
in New York.
Michael Finney
MICHAEL FINNEY is a comedian, magician, philanthropist,
corporate spokesman, motivational speaker, and more.
With an authenticity that disarms audiences almost as soon
as he steps onstage, Michael can squeeze comedy out of what
most would consider nothing. Give him a deck of cards, a
pair of scissors, and some rope, and for the next hour you
will have the time of your life. Many years of performing in
comedy clubs have given Michael a sixth sense about what’s
appropriate for every venue. His confidence and sincerity
transform a simple mixture of character, context, humor, and
magic into something that not only entertains but inspires.
Michael is the 2018–2019 International President of the
I.B.M.
Mike Hammer
MIKE HAMMER worked his way to Las Vegas through
restaurant magic and college shows. He has had a headlining
show in Las Vegas for nine years and is known as the Don
Rickles of comedy magic. Mike is one of the funniest men
around today. Oh, and his magic is great, too. He will be
making his first ever magic convention appearance at the
I.B.M. Convention in Scottsdale. Hammer most recently
appeared on Penn and Teller: Fool Us, and has also appeared
on A&E TV, Bad Ink, and Barry’d Treasure starring Barry
Weiss. He was recognized by Esquire Magazine as a successful
business leader in the Entertainment Capital of the World.
DR. LAWRENCE HASS is a world-renowned magician,
public speaker, magic philosopher, and author. Though not
much interested in magic as a boy, he picked it up in 1994
after finishing his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University
of Illinois and realized how much magic had been overlooked
Dr. Lawrence Hass by the intelligentsia. Since then, he has found his calling as
a magic performer and educator, performing in theaters and
nightclubs as well as colleges. He regularly performs in Las Vegas and is the associate dean
of the McBride Magic and Mystery School. He has also written a number of books for
9

magicians. His innovative approach to magic has been featured in
national publications such as the New York Times, and on networks
such as the Discovery Channel.
KEVIN JAMES’ style of performance is anything but
conventional. His unique comedy and magic has gained him a
reputation as a world-class visual artist. His fresh approach has
allowed him to headline in some of the world’s top showrooms
and theaters. He has performed in one hundred four countries. He
won the Creative Fellowship Award from the Magic Castle and
has performed at the White House. Kevin currently is one of the
stars of the hit touring show The Illusionists and a proud member
of Vaudeville 3000.
Kevin James
JESSICA JANE was born into magic. She grew up on the road in
her godparents’ magic show while her mother performed as their
assistant. When she turned fourteen, Jessica decided she wanted to
continue the magical life, but as a magician. Her father took her
to Las Vegas to attend Lance Burton’s Teen Seminar, and there
she learned about showmanship, scripting, movement, and even
the business side of magic. Since then she has performed in over
ten thousand shows. She recently appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool
Us, was featured on the cover of The Linking Ring, was named the
2017 Magical Entertainer of the Year, opened her own resident
show in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, headlined on cruises going to
twenty-six countries, and performed two military tours for the
men and women serving in the armed forces overseas.
Jessica Jane
JOSHUA JAY has performed in over one hundred countries and
currently has his first residency in New York. He was awarded
the top prize at the World Magic Seminar and has fooled Penn
& Teller on their hit show, Fool Us. He holds a Guinness World
Record in card magic and has performed magic on numerous
television shows, most recently Good Morning America and The
Today Show. Joshua has written three books, MAGIC: The Complete
Course, The Amazing Book of Cards, and Big Magic for Little Hands.
He has designed illusions for stage and screen, including a recent
collaboration with HBO for Game of Thrones. He also consulted
with the United States Postal Service on the design of their
postage stamp series, Magic.
Joshua Jay
PAUL KOZAK is a legend in magic and has been living a life
of bliss in Hawaii performing in his own theater. He’s coming
to the mainland for a rare appearance, and you are in for a treat!
With Kozak, no two shows are ever the same. He customizes every
performance with magic, comedy, and showmanship. “Magic is a
blend of art, science, history, philosophy, and psychology,” he says.
Kozak brings all of these to the table, along with a razor-sharp wit
honed from years of improvisational experience in comedy clubs.
10 Paul Kozak

Misty Lee
MISTY LEE has appeared on NBC’s First Look, DC Daily,
Penn & Teller: Fool Us, and The Dog Whisperer. She was
featured in the comics The Spirit and Madame Mirage, and was
the subject of Vice/Broadly’s mini-documentary A Day with
the Magician. Misty is a frequent performer at Hollywood’s
Magic Castle and became the first woman to hold the office
of residential Houdini Séance Medium in 2010. She is
also the only magician ever admitted into the Institute for
Analytic Interviewing. Under the training of “Truth Wizard”
J.J.Newbury, and alongside agents from the CIA, ATF, and
Scotland Yard, Misty mastered the art of cognitive interview
techniques, becoming a certified “Human Lie Detector.” She
currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Paul Dini,
(co-creator of DC Comics’s Harley Quinn) and their two
rescue dogs, Pixie and The Tank.
Jeff McBride
JEFF MCBRIDE is a three-time award winner at the
International Grand Prix of Magic in Monte Carlo and was
named Magician of the Year by the Academy of Magical
Arts. For several years, McBride headlined at Caesars Magical
Empire in Las Vegas, where he was voted critics’ choice as
Best Magician in Las Vegas. He recently toured South
America with the world’s largest magic show, The Illusionists,
and his McBride’s Wonderground magic nightclub has just
completed its tenth year. McBride’s magic has been featured
on every major television network, with appearances on The
World Magic Awards and Masters of Illusion. He is the founder
and leader of the McBride Magic & Mystery School, based
in Las Vegas and widely known as the world’s leading source
for magical learning.
OSCAR MUÑOZ has been a full-time motivational speaker,
entertainer, and magician for more than thirty-eight years,
performing three hundred school shows a year throughout the
state of Texas. In 1999, he won the Gold Cups in the I.B.M.
Close-up Contest. Oscar served as International President for
2016–2017.
Oscar Muñoz
CHIP ROMERO’s career in magic spans three decades,
including more than one thousand weeks performing as a
cruise ship magician. His contribution to this year’s I.B.M.
Convention is the unique Doug Henning Exhibit. In this
one-time-only display, you will explore firsthand some of
the illusions, props, and paraphernalia that were central to
the Doug Henning legacy of wonder. The exhibit is part of
Romero’s private collection, which he started in 1989. A decade
later, he bought additional Henning items from William
Kennedy and Jim Steinmeyer. Romero’s collection includes
illusions, costumes, props, and handwritten notebooks. When
you walk into the exhibit room, you’ll see items from his three
magic shows: Spellbound, The Magic Show, and Merlin. You’ll
Chip Romero
11

also see things the general public has never seen before.
No photography will be permitted, with one exception:
Plan on having your picture taken next to Henning’s
handmade Zig Zag Illusion. The Doug Henning Exhibit
is funded by the I.B.M. Endowment and Development
Fund.
KEN SCOTT has over twenty years of experience
performing more than three hundred fifty shows a year.
He has entertained more than a million people with
his unique cutting-edge programs. Ken is a four-time
winner of the Greater Atlanta Magician of the Year
award. In addition, Ken was featured on CNN Headline
News, where he headlined their segment on A Day of
Magic, and on ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Video.
Ken performs yearly at the Magic Castle and has also
appeared five times at the White House.
Ken Scott
GREG WILSON began performing
professionally at the tender age of six
years old, with his parents, legendary
magicians, Mark Wilson and Nani
Darnell. He has been featured on
more than thirty television specials.
His live shows have toured throughout
China, Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia,
USA, and many parts of Europe.
Disney’s historic El Capitan Theatre in
Hollywood hosted over one hundred
of Wilson’s Mysteries of Magic grand
illusion performances, setting new
records to capacity crowds. Greg
returned for over one hundred sixty
The Wilsons: Greg, Nani, and Mark.
performances of his Golden Age of Magic
spectacular, and became the only non-
Disney artist to be honored in the theater’s Hall of Fame. Greg proudly carries on his
family traditions through his dedication to the art of magic, and as the creator and curator
of AllakazamArchives.com.
and received countless additional honors.
NANI DARNELL WILSON has been produced, vanished, transposed, levitated, and
divided in hundreds of different illusions, performing in more illusions than any other
person. With her husband, Mark, she was honored at the 2010 I.B.M. Convention in San
Diego as the Special Guest of Honor in recognition of her lifetime of contributions to
magic.
THE CONTESTS
The International Brotherhood of Magicians conducts
annual contests in Close-up Magic and Stage Magic.
These high-profile events attract contestants from every
corner of the globe.
The I.B.M.’s “Gold Medal International Award of
Excellence in Stage Performance” and “Gold Cups
International Award of Excellence in Close-up
Performance” are the pinnacles of achievement in the
world of magic, and they are not conferred every year.
Since these awards first began in 1980, there have been
only seven recipients of The Gold Cups and only eight
recipients of The Gold Medal. Each of these honors is
accompanied by $5,000 in U.S. currency.
Since 2013, the Youth category awards in Stage
and Close-up have been supported by the I.B.M.
Endowment and Development Fund to encourage
participation by our Youth in magic. The most
outstanding Youth Member (age 7 through 17) in the
Stage performance category will receive a special prize
package from Fantasma Magic.
For complete information on award categories and
prizes, visit the Contest area at www.magician.org.
A SHORT HISTORY
OF THE
I.B.M.
BY PAST INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT JACK WHITE
Len Vintus Gene Gordon Don Rogers Warner Dornfield W.W. Durbin
The International Brotherhood
of Magicians had very
humble beginnings. It started
as a letter writing exchange between
three young men who shared a common
interest, a love for the art of
magic. M.J.G. McMullen of Canada,
and Gordon Avery of Buffalo, New
York began writing to each other
about magic in 1922. A few months
later a third young man joined in the
correspondence campaign. His name
was Ernest Schieldge.
If those names sound unfamiliar
to you it is because they all changed
their names and became known in
order as Len Vintus, Gene Gordon,
and Don Rogers.
That trio became the nucleus of the
fledgling I.B.M. Len Vintus took the
Presidency and he became I.B.M.
Member No. 1; Gene Gordon was
Publicity Director with I.B.M. No.
2. Don Rogers became Editor of The
Linking Ring, the Brotherhood’s of-
ficial journal, and he became I.B.M.
Member No. 3. Werner Dornfield,
better known to magicians as
“Dorny,” became involved and was
given I.B.M. Membership No. 4,
though he claimed to be the first official
member since the others were
all officers!
Membership grew rapidly. There
was a clamoring for the formation of
more local groups they called “Rings.”
Gene Gordon established the first
Ring in Rochester, New York. Additional
Rings sprang up as members
sought to meet and exchange ideas
and interests in magic.
The objectives of the I.B.M. are
simple. To organize individuals interested
in the practice and promotion
of the Art of Magic; to facilitate
the exchange of magical ideas; and
to promote harmony among those
interested in magic. The first fully
elected President was the legendary
W.W. Durbin, who won the election
18

during the first I.B.M. Convention
that was held in Durbin’s backyard in
Kenton, Ohio, in 1926.
During that same Convention
the International Brotherhood of
Magicians was incorporated and
a Constitution and By-Laws were
created. Since that time, regular
elections are held each year and a
business meeting is called to report
on the state of the organization.
Now ninety-seven years after its
birth, the I.B.M. continues to forge
ahead in bringing magicians together
from around the world in the interest
of advancing the ethics of magic, and
to oppose exposures, to encourage literature,
to promote professionalism
in magic, and to promote humane
treatment of live animals and birds
used in our Art.
Today, there are over 300 I.B.M
Rings worldwide, boasting nearly
9,000 members. Those who have
served the I.B.M. for twenty-five
years are given the “Order of Merlin”
award, and there are additional
levels of recognition for thirty-five,
fifty, and sixty years of continuous
membership. Some of our members
have served for sixty and seventy
years and continue to remain active.
Dr. John Booth held the record
as our longest-standing member,
having been a member for over
eighty-one years! Through the years,
those members whose dedication to
magic has led them to the highest
office have made contributions of
time and talent that are immeasurable.
All have felt honored and have
continued to serve in various capacities.
As we move forward, the I.B.M.
faces new technology and changes
in attitudes but while we may have
our ups and downs, the object and
goals remain the same.
It is still the grandest magic
organization in the world.
Early issues of The Linking Ring. More copies of this journal have been
printed and distributed than any other magic magazine in history.
Pick Any Two That Fit You!
These three presenters will repeat their
lecture two times between 1:00 p.m. and
3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. Pick two
out of the three to attend.
Buster Balloon shares some of his favorite
audience tested, real world performance
material for kid-show and family
audiences. Matt Baker delivers devious
and entertaining magic brimming with
original plots and methods. Matt will focus
on powerful yet easy-to-do mentalism
with cards. David DaVinci teaches how
to work on ships, get the gig, and build
your career. David dives into the details
behind making educated decisions and
how to thrive in the process.
To my magical friends in all
clubs, Thank you.
Many of you know that in September 2018, as I was
walking down the streets of Austin with both hands
in my pockets, I tripped and greeted the concrete
with my face. Four days later, I was paralyzed from
the waist down and in my left arm. I had suffered a
major stroke.
While in the hospital, Susan and Nick Lewin and
Peter the Adequate came to visit. When I was sent
home, Kent Cummins and rest of the magic club
came to my house for a magic meeting.
Two brain surgeries later, I have full use of everything
and am even training for my next 26.2-mile marathon.
We can NEVER take for granted the love, support,
and friendship of our brothers and sisters in this
magical community. The phone calls, texts, and love
they sent contributed to me still being a part of this
world.
I can never thank you enough. I love you all!
