All trills in this piece are half-step trills.
PERFORMANCE NOTES
All wind effects (including jet whistles and blowing air through the instrument) must be
as present within the ensemble as possible, no matter what their given dynamic is.
All flute pizzicati/slaptongues should aim more for tone over its percussive qualities.
All trombone glissandi (including passages marked "quasi-gliss.") should be generally smeary
and nasty without sacrificing tone. They should last the full intended duration given, or
as close to it as possible.
Smaller noteheads indicate ossia passages. The ossia passage for Trumpet 1, Trumpet 3, and
Trombone 1 from measures 292-310 is highly encouraged - these instruments must be
consistently secure in their tone, establish a stronger and more powerful sound, and
generally avoid shrillness as much as possible.
Forte and fortissimo dynamics throughout this piece should be considered in terms of energy,
not volume. In general, these passages should be powerful in nature. Avoid harshness as much
as possible (with the exception of measures 140-167), but allow the music to be especially
aggressive and percussive where needed.
