A renovated boutique hotel
Designed by the well-known Slovenian architect Irena Brecelj
and graphic designer Julija Strle Zornik, Hotel Mrak is an
ode both to the remarkable history of Ljubljana and to the
unique contemporary culture, creativity and style, presented
as a boutique hotel in the heart of Ljubljana.
Much of what Ljubljana looks like today is owed to
the renowned architect Jože Plečnik.
There are numerous cultural, historical and architectural
gems near Hotel Mrak, eight of which inspired the
designer to create unique wallpapers and hotel
accessories.
Architecture and cultural heritage in fusion with easy
elegance and urbanity is perfectly encapsulated in the
hotel’s contemporary interiors.

Hotel History
Since it was founded more than
a century ago by Valentin Mrak, in 1914,
it has been one of the most popular places
for Slovenian actors, poets, artists, painters
and writers.
They used to gather here and organise
literary events and poetry readings.
The hotel is named after well-known
Slovenian writer and playwrite Ivan Mrak
who used to live here with his wife.
Since 2016, Hotel Mrak has been owned by
the Kuharic family who renovated the hotel,
although it still maintains its artistic traditions.

Hotel Mrak has always been known for its excellent traditional Slovenian cuisine. This
photograph of the Culinary School was taken in the hotel’s garden approximately 100
years ago.

In the old hotel cookbooks, we found a handwritten recipe for a traditional Slovenian dish
that is still as popular today as it was a century ago. Here is a hundred-year-old recipe
for Barley Soup by Hotel Mrak. You can make it yourself and share your experience of
cooking this traditional Slovenian dish on our social media.
Barley Soup
1 kg barley
1 kg dried meat
150 g beans
2 carrots
2 parsley roots with green leaves
a slice of celery
1 leek
a few cabbage leaves
a slice of kohlrabi
1 onion
a few cloves of garlic
3-4 tomatoes
1/2 kg of potatoes
1 pepper, bay leaf, salt and pepper
Cook soaked barley and beans in a large pot,
then add the meat. After one hour of slow boiling
mix all the vegetables and spices. Half an hour
before the dish is cooked, add diced potatoes.
The salt is added just before the dish is finished
because of the salinity of the meat.
Pick the vegetables out of the dish just before
serving or, if you prefer the dish with vegetables,
cut the raw vegetables into small pieces,
cook it and then leave it in the dish. Cut the meat
into slices and serve aside the berley or cut into
bite-size pieces and serve it mixed with barley and
vegetables on the same plate.
You can also offer sauerkraut or turnip with barley.

MRAK ROOM
The Mrak room is suitable for smaller closed
groups of up to 25 persons. The room is
equipped with a projector and presentation
tools, as well as free internet access.
We offer a fine selection of food, drinks and

them in the meeting room, the restaurant
area or outside in the hotel garden.
