The Far Soomaali alphabet (Osmanya)

is a writing script created to make exact

the Somali language. It was invented

1920 by Osman Yusuf Kenadid, the son

of Sultan Yusuf Ali Kenadid of the

Sultanate of Hobyo (Obbia).

Learn how to write Somali

In 1922 Osman Keenadiid began teaching people how to write

their own language,

Nearly 3 years of teaching Italian colony took over city

Hobyo Capital of Sultanate and the rest of South

Somalia. It was 25.11.1925.

Osman was caught in Hoby Capital of Sultanate at the

time when he was very busy at his teaching program.

Osman was in prison for 3 years, in Mogadishu.

After he got out of prison, he began to reunite with his

family .

In 1932 he began his purpose of starting to teach

people writing the Somali language. From that time

the program was developed.

called Osmania. He thought a common script would

help unify all Somalis. Some religious people thought

SYL and Freedom struggle

The Somali Youth League was founded in 1943.

SYL had asked the British colony in Mogadishu, the

capital of Somalia to give SYL a room where they will

use to teach both English and Somali language.

SYL got permission but after 6 months the room was

closed. The reason for closing was that the police

had found a letter in a Somali man’s pocket after

shooting

him. The police suspected if there was

retlation between SYL and the man who was shot

down.
