Our Mission
הצהרת משימתינו
Yeshiva Har Torah is a Centrist Orthodox yeshiva for
boys and girls. Our mission is to educate children in a
warm, caring environment that brings out the unique
qualities and maximum potential of each child. As a
religious school, Yeshiva Har Torah is dedicated to Torah
values, Halacha (Jewish law), and Medinat Yisrael (the
State of Israel). Our goal is to provide a challenging
and innovative academic program and to foster a
love of learning in each child, while integrating Kavod
HaBriot (respect for humanity) in all that we do.
Dear YHT Family,
I am especially proud to share our 2020-21/5781 Year in
Review with you, which captures our Yeshiva’s exciting
and eventful journey during a global pandemic. While
there was little that could be considered “normal” about
this year, we succeeded in providing our students with an
inspiring and meaningful learning experience and our
faculty and staff with a supportive and growth oriented
professional experience. We created, and I mean literally
created, a safe and healthy environment which enabled
us to keep our doors open throughout the school year.
While many would like to forget ‘20-’21, we have so much
for which to be grateful, so many accomplishments to
celebrate and share and so many lessons which have
been learned. The second paragraph of the Shema
opens with והיה אם שמע תשמעו...‏ - If, then, you obey the
commandments... Citing the Talmud in Sukkah, Rashi
‏,שמע תשמעו comments on the apparent repetition of
אם שמע בישן תשמע בחדש which is intended to teach us that
“if you hearken to the old,” meaning, if you repeatedly
review the old lessons, you will hearken to the new, you
will more easily gain new knowledge. I hope you enjoy
the ‘20-’21/5781 Year in Review, which I anticipate will
help us reflect upon and learn from the lessons of an
extraordinary year.

Administration Moves

Mr. Ephi Strazynski has served as Assistant Executive Director at YHT for the past five
years and, beginning the summer of 2021, assumed the role of Executive Director, with
responsibility for oversight of the school’s business office and physical plant.
Ms. Elisheva Langstein joins us as Assistant Principal for Grades 3-4. Previously, Ms.
Langstein was an accomplished teacher and young leader at Westchester Day School, serving
on the faculty liaison committee and school task force to develop the mission statement.
She was also integral in developing the school-wide behavior management system.
Dr. Beata Schulman joined us in March of this past year as our Director of Development.
She came to us from the office of philanthropist Ambassador Ronald S. Lauder, where she
served as Director of Holocaust and Jewish Education, with responsibility for fundraising and
advising in those areas. Prior to that, she founded and served as both Executive Director and
Director of Development for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation (ABMF).
Mr. Jonathan Weitzman joins us as our Director of Finance. He earned his Bachelor of Science
in accounting from the Sy Syms School of Business. He then served as an auditor at Grant
Thornton for five years, working with publicly traded companies, and then transitioned to
specialize in non-for-profit organizations, with a focus on Israeli and Jewish organizations.
Most recently, Mr. Weitzman was the Finance Manager at Yeshivah of Flatbush.

Grow Torah
Sports Rebrand

After a year-long design process, we are
excited to unveil YHT’s new unified sports
identity, the Haganah, and amazing new
team uniforms. The logo incorporates an H
for “Haganah,” and H and T for “Har Torah,”
a sword gesture from the original Haganah
logo, and a custom olive branch herringbone
to evoke the olive branch logo from the
original Haganah logo.
We partnered with Grow Torah to develop a garden
and integrate agricultural and Judaic Studies
content into our curriculum. Thanks to the YHT-
PTA for providing start-up funding for this project,
which we anticipate growing in the future.

Innovation Award
Beginning with the 2021-
22 school year, Josh
and Lisa (‘99) Reiss have
established and endowed
annual awards for YHT
faculty who develop
innovative new approaches
to teaching. The award is
intended to incentivize
and recognize teachers
who push our teaching
methods forward in new
and exciting ways.
For the summer of 2020, with fewer summer options
available due to the pandemic, we offered Summer Scholar
elective courses for students. Under the direction of Mr.
Brandon Melendez, our Grades 5-8 Humanities Coordinator,
approximately 100 students took courses in areas of interest
and brushed up on their schoolwork.

The YHT-PTA had quite a busy and successful year!
Despite changing some programs to virtual and having
limited in-person volunteer opportunities, the YHT-PTA
sponsored 15 special programs and provided delicious
treats in school for our children to celebrate Rosh
Chodesh and holidays. In recognition of their dedication
and commitment during a particularly challenging year,
the PTA paid special tribute to faculty and staff at the
annual PTA Supperette. In all, parents contributed to 14
different fundraising programs and volunteered in many
creative ways. Thank you all!
