Donald Duncan
Founder, Duncan Toy Company
(1892-1971)
Hall of Fame Inductee Hall of Fame Inductee
The yo-yo, which many believe can be traced back to 500 B.C., got
new life in the U.S. in 1928 when Donald Duncan saw Filipino native
Pedro Flores’s yo-yo store and factory in Santa Barbara, California.
In 1930, Duncan purchased Flores’ production facilities and hired
him to run yo-yo promotions. Duncan moved the manufacturing
business to Chicago and, in the 1930s, teamed up with Hearst
newspapers to promote yo-yo contests. A single promotion in
Philadelphia sold 3 million yo-yos in 30 days, and in 1932 the first
ever World Yo-Yo Competition was held in London, England. In
1946, Duncan built a new yo-yo factory in Wisconsin, an area rich
in hard maple and, in 1955, contracted with Flambeau Products
Corporation to make plastic yo-yos. Duncan retired in 1957 and
handed the company to his sons Jack and Don, Jr. Today, Duncan
remains the world’s largest producer of yo-yos and spin tops.
Alfred J. Verrecchia
Chairman, Hasbro, Inc.
Al Verrecchia assumed the position of Chairman of Hasbro, Inc. on
May 22, 2008. Previously, he served as Hasbro’s President and Chief
Executive Officer (May 2003- May 2008) and held several senior executive
positions over the years, including President and Chief Operating Officer,
Chief Financial Officer, President, Hasbro Manufacturing Services, and
Executive Vice President, Global Operations, among other key roles.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Mr. Verrecchia joined Hasbro in 1965 as a
part-time accountant. That started a career in the toy industry that has
spanned 45 years and saw Verrecchia steadily rise from that job as a junior
accountant to Chairman of the Board of the world’s second largest toy company.
Verrecchia has also taken on many leadership roles in the industry. He has
served on the TIA Board of Directors a number of times and was Chair of
both the finance committee and the budget committee; he also served on
the investment committee and the audit committee. During his tenure, he
helped manage the overwhelming changes taking place with the Consumer
Product Safety Commission, as well as the Consumer Product Safety
Improvement Act. He worked closely with TIA staff and board members
to ensure that the industry’s safety record and self-assessments were
brought to the government’s attention.
In addition, Verrecchia serves on the Toy Industry Foundation board.
Additionally, Al joined with Gary Hutchins from Australia to create the
Toy Industry’s CEO Roundtable.
He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from University of
Rhode Island. Mr. Verrecchia also received an Honorary Doctor of Business
Administration from Johnson & Wales University in 1991 and an Honorary
Doctor of Laws from URI in 2004. He currently serves as [Immediate Past]
Chair of the Toy Industry Association and as Chairman of the Board of
Lifespan, an integrated health care system that provides a comprehensive
array of services to Rhode Island and Southern New England residents.
Mr. Verrecchia is also on the board of FM Global, the world’s largest commercial
and industrial property insurance company focusing on risk management
and specializing in engineering-driven property. He is currently a member of
the Board of Old Stone Corporation and a former member of the CVS and
FGX International Boards. Most recently, Mr. Verrecchia accepted the role
of board member for Iron Mountain, a leading document and information
management company.

Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Honored Guests:
As Chairman of the Toy Industry Association, it is both a pleasure and an honor to
welcome you to the 11th Annual Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards.
As we begin a new decade of TOTY, we also debut a wide range of enhancements to
the industry’s premier awards program. Some of these changes – such as our fantastic
new venue – you will have noticed immediately, but many other changes that have helped
to bring this program up to the next level went on largely behind the scenes.
Nearly 60 toy industry academics, inventors and designers, journalists and media experts, and
retail buyers from mass and specialty outlets lent their time, wisdom and expertise as members
of the 11 Nominating Committees that were formed to review the hundreds of products
submitted and determine which would earn a prestigious spot on this year’s TOTY ballots.
The 70 TOTY finalists were unveiled during a national press conference held just days before the official kick-off of the
holiday shopping season. The winners you will hear announced tonight represent the “best of the best” toys, games and
licenses our industry has to offer as determined through the responses to five distinct ballots that were completed by
industry peers, retailers (mass and specialty), media, and consumers… those who actually play with our products.
Tonight, we will also honor industry veteran Al Verrecchia, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Hasbro, Inc. and the late
Donald Duncan, founder of Duncan Toys, as we induct them into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame. Both Al and Donald have
contributed immensely to the toy industry, and we are pleased to pay tribute to them.
Another significant enhancement to our program is the formal acknowledgement that TOTY is a Toy Industry Associationadministered
event in support of the Toy Industry Foundation (TIF). As the philanthropic arm of the toy industry, TIF brings
joy to children through play. Our collective efforts in support of the Foundation help to make a difference in the lives of
disadvantaged boys and girls and their families. We express our appreciation to those of you who already support the
Foundation, and encourage those of you who are not yet engaged to become active contributors.
Tonight is a perfect opportunity to reflect on how fortunate we all are to be in a business where our primary purpose is to
help bring the joy of toys and play to kids around the world. Let us enjoy the time together to celebrate the successes of
2010 and to look ahead to a wonderful Toy Fair and fantastic 2011!

Dear Friends,
Tonight as we celebrate the accomplishments of our industry, I want to thank the
many of you that through your generosity made 2010 the most momentous year in Toy
Industry Foundation’s history. It is only through your support of TOTY Tribute Book
ads, the Leaders Circle and the Toy Bank that we are able to provide toys and play to
so many important children’s causes.
As your Foundation we’ve been able to serve every branch of the military through
our newest partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Military Services,
Play Comforts. With our strategic partner the My Stuff Bags Foundation we grew our
annual Do Good Stuff-a-thon volunteer event and helped to send almost 30,000 duffel
bags filled with essentials to foster kids around the country. We joined forces with
Kids in Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.) to distribute disaster relief products to Haiti and Tennessee and we continue to bring
smiles to patients and their family members at Ronald McDonald Houses throughout North America. In total we distributed
more than half a million toys around the world this past year thanks to your support of the Toy Bank.
This evening you will have the opportunity for the first time to meet all of our philanthropy partners in person. Each of them
has a story to tell - from the daughter who is waiting for her father to return home from war, to the sibling who’s afraid that
his brother might not ever get well, to the foster child with nothing to call their own. Play matters in every child’s life we’re
able to touch thanks to your donations.
It is with gratitude and enthusiasm that we acknowledge the generous contributions of the many companies, institutions
and individuals, who demonstrate their dedication to our work throughout the year. We hope tonight’s event held by the TIA
on behalf of your industry’s Foundation will increase awareness of and support for our efforts so that the Toy Industry will
be able to impact even more children’s lives in 2011 and beyond.

The Toy Industry Foundation’s mission is to bring joy, comfort, and learning to
children in need through the experience of toys and play. While other organizations
provide food, shelter and support services to children and their families, we
put toys in the hands of those who need them most – children living in poverty,
suffering from chronic illness, rescued from crisis situations, or living with the
stress of having a parent in the military – providing the chance to just be kids.

Since its inception, the Toy Industry Foundation’s signature program,
the Toy Bank, has distributed over 7.5 million new toys, valued at over
$55 million, to deserving kids around the world. In 2010, the TIF was
proud to name Kids in Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.) as our new Toy
Bank partner.

About the Toy Industry Foundation About the Toy Industry Foundation
To provide comfort for the sons and daughters of our nation’s active duty and reserve
personnel on a national scale, the Toy Industry Foundation (TIF) entered into a new
partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). Through this program, known as
Play Comforts, Toy Bank toys are distributed to Boys & Girls Clubs located on military
bases with the highest deployment rates across the country.

Together, the Toy Industry Foundation and strategic partner The My
Stuff Bags Foundation continue to give foster children with nothing of
their own something to hold on to – a duffel bag full of essentials like
clothing, toiletries, and a brand new toy. A third year of partnership full
of activity is already underway including plans for the annual Do Good
Stuff-A-Thon to be held on Friday, May 13, 2011. Save the date!
In addition to toys, each My Stuff Bag contains
a hand made item such as a hat or blanket.

Award Guidelines
Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards
Long recognized as THE event to salute the success,
creativity and playful spirit of the North American
toy industry, TOTY 2011 fully embraces the
philanthropic nature of the industry by rebranding
itself as a
“Toy Industry Association-administered event in
support of the Toy Industry Foundation.”
The TOTYs also underwent a major structural
transformation since celebrating their ten-year
anniversary in 2010. The submission and selection
processes were re-engineered, and the voting process
expanded to include input not only from members of
the Toy Industry Association, but also from retailers,
journalists and consumers.
On November 22nd, 2010, the nominees were unveiled
and voting began during a national press conference
held in New York City; toys took over the Great White
Way as TOTY images filled Jumbotrons on Broadway
throughout Thanksgiving week.
Award Guidelines
The Award Guidelines shown below will illustrate
the “new and improved” TOTY 2011:

Eligibility
Representatives from any toy manufacturer or
toy-related company are eligible to nominate products
and/or companies for award categories defined in the
TOTY Awards Program Guidelines.
An unlimited number of products may be submitted
per award category, however no more than two
products from one company may appear in an
award category on the final ballot. Companies with
multiple divisions and whose individual divisions have
nominated toys may be represented by up to three
products.

Criteria
All 2011 TOTY nominated products must have been:
(1) available at retail in the United States on or
before November 22nd, 2010, and
(2) introduced to the marketplace within the
last two years.
[Note: A new version of an older product line was
deemed eligible so long as the “new” iteration was
introduced within the last two years.]
Submissions had to contain detailed explanations
about the product’s play value, creativity/originality,
application of new technology, creative manufacturing
processes, adherence to safety standards, commentary
on how the product is meeting marketplace expectations,
and details of outstanding, unusual and/or creative
execution of artwork, product/package design,
promotional strategy and execution.
Selection of TOTY Finalists
Finalists were selected by the members of eleven
Nominations Committees – one for each category –
comprised of seven to fifteen high-stature experts
representing retail buyers, journalists, bloggers and
toy industry media spokespersons, academics and
inventors/designers. Nearly 60 persons staffed
the committees.
Award Guidelines
Press Conference
On November 22nd, 2010, the TOTY nominees in 11
distinct categories were unveiled at a national press
conference held in the heart of New York City. The event
also marked the launch of the first-ever voting website,

for their favorite toys” during the holiday season.
The promotion of TOTY took to the streets of Manhattan
immediately following the press conference as
mobile computer screens and a Jumbotron in Times
Square featured a loop displaying the 2011 nominees
throughout the week, and TOTY had a bird’s eye view of
the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Voting
Five weighted ballots – one each for consumers (25%),
mass and specialty retailers (40% combined), journalists
and bloggers (20%), and members of the Toy Industry
Association (15%) – were closed in mid-January. Winners
will be announced tonight during the TOTY 2011 awards
presentation ceremony.
Award Categories
The 2011 TOTY Awards will honor products and
companies for their outstanding performance in eleven
categories, as well as an overall “Toy of the Year.”
• Activity Toy of the Year
Toys that inspire creative play through various
forms of activity
• Boy Toy of the Year
Toys developed for boys of any age
• Educational Toy of the Year
Toys that help children to develop special skills
and knowledge through play
• Game of the Year
Children’s board, card, CD-ROM or electronic game
formats (all electronic games must have an ESRB
“Early Childhood” rating)
• Girl Toy of the Year
Toys developed for girls of any age
• Infant/Toddler Toy of the Year
Toys developed for infant children and toddlers
(ages up to 36 months)
Award Categories
• Innovative Toy of the Year
Toys that combine innovation and play value
• Outdoor Toy of the Year
Toys designed for outdoor play
• Preschool Toy of the Year
Toys developed for preschool-aged children
(ages 3-5)
• Property of the Year
Property that had the greatest success spreading
its brand throughout the industry
• Specialty Toy of the Year
Toys primarily distributed through specialty retailers
Toy of the Year
The biggest honor of the evening is awarded to the
year’s best toy, which is selected from among the
candidate toys and games balloted in the individual
award categories

Patch Products Inc.’s CEO Bob Wann shares a bit
about himself and why he recently increased his
commitment to become a Platinum member of the
TIF Leaders Circle.
Why do you choose to give to the Toy Industry
Foundation?
I have seen firsthand the extraordinarily good work
done by the Foundation. The passion, energy and
commitment that the whole Toy Industry Foundation
team consistently applies to our industry’s efforts
towards helping kids and families in need or distress
through its diverse and expanding lists of programs
is exceptional! It is extremely gratifying to be able to
participate and work with such a dedicated group of
people who represent our industry so well and make
such a difference in the lives of needy families.
What particular Foundation program or
initiative are you most excited about?
That is a tough choice because they all do such great
work and bring such joy to deserving children. If I had
to choose, though, I think the Boys & Girls Clubs of
Leaders Circle Spotlight
America Military Services Program would get my
vote. It’s a new program that has already brought so
many smiles to military families making sacrifices for
our country. This program was the first-ever national
toy distribution program to reach every branch of the
military: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and
the Navy; culminating with the historic toy giveaway
at the Guantanamo Bay military base in December
2010. This program, in just one short year, has already
donated tens of thousands of toys across the 21
military bases with the highest deployment rates in
the country.
Did you have a favorite Scottish toy as a child?
Like all European kids, I grew up with a passion for
football (or soccer as we call it here!), so naturally I
was drawn to anything that gave me the opportunity
to live out the fantasy of being one of the world’s
greatest soccer players! This included a toy favorite
of mine called Subbuteo. Subbuteo was a tabletop
soccer game for 2 players using small plastic soccer
players on a green cloth field. You had to flick one of
these plastic players to “kick” and “pass” the ball until

you eventually scored against your opponent with
the winning goal! The real appeal of the toy was the
ability to buy, build and customize your own complete
soccer team allowing you to enter the glamorous,
fantasy world of some of the most gifted and revered
athletes in the world, the world of International
Soccer! It was really quite simple, even a little funny
looking (see below), but like all great playthings it was
a lot of fun and entertained me and my friends for
hours on end!
What is your
favorite aspect
of working with the toy community?
What I enjoy most about this industry is the unique
character of the people and the culture of the
industry. This industry either gets in your blood
quickly and you stay and get more and more involved
for a long, long time, in many cases for decades! Or
alternatively there are people who join our industry,
try it for a while, and find it too fast paced, too
unpredictable, perhaps even “nuts” and leave quickly
because they can’t handle it any more. Fortunately
most of us are in the first category! Once you try it
you LOVE it! It does get in your blood! The pace, the
passion, the creativity and energy of the people are
totally unique, totally invigorating! The camaraderie,
the opportunity to build life-long friends whom you

not only respect and admire, but have fun with and
enjoy working with is exceptional! And on top of all
of this we get to make “fun stuff” – toys and games
that bring people together and keep that child-like
quality inside all of us alive and well! There is no
industry like us!!!
What are you most proud of?
Building or launching big brands or programs instead
of items has always been a key passion of mine. I have
been fortunate enough to have worked on some of
the most recognized brands in toys and consumer
goods. This includes working with some of the best
companies and most talented people in our industry
to develop together key brands such as Fisher-Price,
Playskool, Care Bears, Monopoly, Scrabble, Mr.
Potato Head and NERF. I am most proud of having
played a role in helping either introduce or build these
brands to new heights in sales, consumer penetration
and brand awareness.
Also, currently I am thrilled and take great pride in the
fact that for the first time in Patch Products’ 23-year
history, we have one of our newest games, 5 Second
Rule, nominated for TOTY’s Game of the Year.
What is your greatest ambition that you have
yet to achieve?
I have a key personal goal that I set for myself a
number of years ago, which was to play every one
of the Top 20 rated golf courses in the USA. So far, I
have played 13 of the Top 20, with the biggest courses
left to play being Augusta National, Cypress Point
and Bethpage Black. My fingers are crossed that I’ll
get to play at least one of those in 2011!
On the professional front l am real excited about the
opportunity to help grow Patch Products from a
well-established successful game and puzzle
company into a successful multi-category toy
company. I joined Patch in April 2009 and have been
working with our teams here to create and build
brands, develop unique retailer programs and expand
into more toy categories. Hopefully, for those people
that come visit us at Toy Fair these changes, with
our expanded brands, new licenses and entry into
new toy categories this evolution, will be obvious
and be confirmation that we are on track to realize
this ambition.
Why is play so important?
Play is beneficial for children because it positively
affects their emotional and intellectual development,
contributes to their well-being and self-esteem, and
brings joy and fun into their lives. Adults need some
play time, too, to give us a break from work and allow
us to relax, which in the long run will keep us at our
best! Playing together as a family or with friends is
the perfect way to make sure we all get enough play
time, and also much-needed quality time together.
No matter your age, gender, nationality or cultural
background play is universal, play is supremely
important to us all!
Are you smarter than a 5th grader?
Absolutely not! Based on my experience playing
the board game as well as attempting to answer
questions while watching the TV show, I am not sure if
I can claim to be smarter than a 3rd grader never mind
a 5th Grader!
