Maintenance & Cleaning
Frequency of Cleaning
Daily
Everyday grit and soil carried in by foot traffic and like should be routinely
removed by using a suitably powerful industrial vacuum cleaner, typically 200
watts or more. Gentle agitation by stiff brushwork will encourage dirt
particles within the carpet strips to be loosened and vacuumed.
Monthly
Emco mats are designed so that individual panels which make up the whole
mat are easily rolled up, in order to gain access to the matwell below.
Vacuuming or brushing away can then easily remove debris deposited within
the matwell. Care should be taken upon replacement to refit mat clips,
which are ‘push fitted’ to the underside of matting panels at intersection
points.
Annually
A more thorough clean is recommended on an annual basis to keep the
Emco matting in tip-top working condition, and looking its best, particularly
to panels of matting which are subject to heaviest wear and tear.
Simple removal of selected panels is easy, remembering to use proper
Manual Handling techniques. Stand panels on end i.e. run of profiles running
vertically, and apply a Jet Washer with clean tap water at temperatures of no
higher than 60°C. Mild detergents (neutral pH) can be be used to improve
the cleaning process and/or removal of oils and grease. Rinse using clean
water and allow to drip dry in a well-aired space for an hour or two until dry.
Operation & Maintenance Manual
Emco open construction matting is specifically designed to enable foot-borne dirt and soil to fall between the
aluminium profiles. Regular cleaning and maintenance is, therefore, vital to maintain the optimal functionality of
the mat whilst in operation.
A prescriptive regime for the frequency of cleaning cannot be given, upon the basis that each site will have
considerably varying conditions. Even climate and seasonal conditions will have a bearing on levels of soiling, dirt
and moisture build up.
Nevertheless the following guidelines for cleaning are recommended by
Emco for matting subjected to typical conditions.

Maintenance & Cleaning
Replacement of Carpet Rib System
It is not always possible to avoid cigarette burns, chewing gum or oil stains in the entrance area. Millions of
footfalls on a surface means it eventually may have to be replaced.
The replacement rib system significantly increases the effective life of EMCO entrance matting. The basic aluminium
mat chassis remains, only the carpet ribs are changed.
Procedure
1.
Remove the old ribs by hand.
2.
Clean the aluminium mat chassis of any dirt or rib remnants.
3.
Insert the replacement carpet strip until flush with one end
of the aluminium mat chassis profile.
4.
A few taps with a rubber mallet accurately positions the carpet strip
into its aluminium support. Cut off any excess that protrudes from the
aluminium chassis.
Damage
If damage occurs to the mat whilst in operation, we strongly recommend
that you contact our technical help line for the best advice for action. Due
to the structured design of the EMCO mat, it is almost certain that the
majority of repair can be carried out on site, without the need to return to
the factory for repair. Emco engineers can be on your doorstep at short
notice to carry out rectification work.
Maintenance & Cleaning
DO’S and DON’TS
DO’S
Do adhere to suggested routine for cleaning schedule.
Do review schedule of cleaning based upon usage and times of year.
Chewing Gum
Discarded chewing gum should be dealt with promptly before becoming hardened and engrained into the carpet
surface. It can be removed using freeze spray technology or by use of proprietary gum removing gels, and
subsequently scraped out of the carpet pile.
Spot Cleaning
Stubborn stains should be treated on a localised basis with a solvent-based spot remover, of which several are
available in the market place.
Wet Spillages
Operation & Maintenance Manual
Do ensure that dirt, grit, or any loose objects are removed from mat gaps, as accumulation of such
dirt may cause mat to rise and present a trip hazard.
Do observe maximum Load bearing statistics, which are provided.
Do obtain professional help from our Technical Help desk for advice when attempting to make repairs to
damaged components or mat.
Do observe appropriate Manual Handling Techniques upon lifting and removal of mats from matwell.
Do replace mat fixing clips upon replacement of mats to matwell.
Do concentrate cleaning on areas of heaviest use.
Do, upon removal of mat, inspect condition of matwell for signs of possible screed failure or break up.
DONT’S
Do not use counter rotating brush type vehicular cleaning machinery.
Do not use orbital type polishing equipment over matting.
Do not use any bleaching cleaning agents, use instead PH neutral.
Smaller wet spillages can be soaked up using any high absorbent material. Larger spillages can be dealt with either
by utilising a wet pick up vacuum cleaner. Alternatively remove the mat, stand up right and leave to dry in a well
ventilated and airy area.
