The structural fire protection used in a building is a life safety system
for its occupants. All fire protection systems must have passed a fire
test and a series of appraisals that are carried out under laboratory
conditions. However, for a product to give the necessary protection
to a structure and its occupants it must be installed properly. To
ensure a high standard of installation is maintained, Grace only sells
Monokote ® High Yield fireproofing systems to contractors who are
members of its Team 1 scheme and who have been trained by the
company in the correct application of its systems.
Grace requires that all
Team 1 contractors that
install Monokote Fire
Protection Systems are
members of both FIRAS and
ASFP. This ensures on-going,
independent monitoring of
installed product quality.

The Fire Accredition Scheme (FIRAS) is
an independent organisation for
installers/applicators of passive fire
protection products. The scheme was
born out of a concern that the level of
skill and understanding of many
contractors installing an increasing
number of sophisticated fire protection
products was too low
to ensure adequate
levels of workmanship.
The FIRAS scheme enables installers/
applicators to gain the necessary skills,
not only through training, but also by
monitoring their workmanship. This is
done on an ongoing basis through site
inspections and checks of their quality
management systems. A FIRAS
Accredited Installer is then assessed as
Team 1
competent to undertake the
installation/application of a range of
passive fire protection products.
The Association for Specialist Fire
Protection (ASFP) was set up in 1975 to
promote best practices in the fire
protection industry and it has a
membership made up of manufacturers
and installers of passive fire protection
systems. Manufacturer members of the
ASFP submit their products and test
data for independent
scrutiny prior to inclusion
of the product in the
‘Yellow Book’. Installers
are audited to check that
they are sufficiently
competent to carry out
appropriate projects.

Performance Under Fire
Temperatures in the First Interstate Bank
blaze soared to more than 1100 °C,
disintegrating gypsum wallboard,
melting desks, chairs and making
twisted wrecks of metal ducts on four
floors. But the fireproofed structural
floor beams, columns and decking
withstood the onslaught, limiting the
spread of the fire and preventing total
building collapse.
The fireproofing commenced in 1972
but not with Monokote ® . After the
fireproofing had been completed on
floors 1-9, the decision was made to
finish the project with Monokote. When
fire subsequently broke out on the 12th
floor, Monokote was where it was
supposed to be – adhered to the steel.
In-place performance is critical in a real
fire where fireproofing is tested more
severely than is ever simulated under
laboratory fire test conditions. The
fireproofing’s ability to meet critical
standards of air erosion, bond strength,
impact and abrasion resistance is vital.
In the chaos of the First Interstate fire,
superheated air rushed through exposed
shafts and around the outside of the
steel and the Monokote was subjected to
impact abuse and abrasion damage from
hoses and fire fighting equipment. The
building still stands, a testimony to the
ultimate benefit of Monokote’s solid inplace
performance.
Monokote fireproofing was the last line
of defence for the First Interstate Bank, a
building which had no operational
sprinkler system. Passive fire protection
systems should never be traded off
against the cost of automatic sprinklers
or other fire fighting improvements.
Even in buildings with sprinkler systems,
the back-up protection of Monokote is
vitally important.
With the help of Monokote, a
catastrophe was averted at the First
Interstate Bank building, proving that in
a major fire Monokote maintains the
structural integrity of the building and
functions effectively as a life safety
system.
Thanks to a wise decision made in 1972, and a firstrate
team of over 275 firefighters, the First Interstate
Bank building in Los Angeles is still standing after
the largest high-rise fire in California history …

MONOKOTE ® FIREPROOFING
A range of gypsum and portland cement
based, spray applied fire protection systems.
Used to provide passive fire protection to
steel and concrete framed structures.
MONOKOTE ® MK-6/HY
For concealed, commercial applications.
MK-6/HY forms a durable surface that does
not dust or flake. It uses a unique injection
system at the nozzle that accelerates the
material set. This enables MK-6/HY to
withstand typical weather conditions during
the ‘open envelope’ construction phase. Final
thicknesses can be achieved immediately
unlike conventional spray systems that
require several hours between coats.
Installed only by trained Team 1 applicators.
MONOKOTE ® MK-6/HY ES
This system allows the material to be left in
the lines for several days unlike
conventional spray systems that require
daily wash-out. Waste is reduced,
productivity increased and the building
schedule accelerated. Leaving MK-6/HY ES
in the hoses overnight means an earlier
start can be made the next day. Installed
only by trained Team 1 applicators.
MONOKOTE ® MK-6s
For commercial concealed applications.
MK-6s is specifically designed to be cost

effective on smaller projects, with greater
simplicity of installation.
MONOKOTE ® Z-106/HY
For semi exposed commercial applications,
susceptible to damage. A portland cement
based material specifically formulated for
use in areas susceptible to damage and high
humidity. Z-106/HY utilises the same
unique injection system for accelerated set
as MK-6/HY.
MONOKOTE ® Z-146
For the most demanding commercial and
industrial applications, where impact and
abrasion are likely. Suitable for fully
exposed and external applications. Z-146 is
a hard wearing, portland cement based
formulation that can be trowel finished.

MK-6/HY concealed MK-6/HY can be applied from one central
pumping station to a building of up to 50 storeys.
MK-6/HY is light weight, economical and fast to
apply. The use of an injection process at the gun
head sets this material typically within 15 minutes.
Monokote ® MK-6s Commercial A simple one-component system for
concealed small projects.
Monokote ® Commercial Monokote MK-6/HY ES has been developed in
MK-6/HY concealed conjunction with MK-6/HY, to be left in the lines
Extended Set overnight. This removes the need for daily wash-out
and reduces water consumption and waste.
Monokote ® Commercial Harder than MK-6, used to protect steel and
Z-106/HY ® concealed and concrete in areas susceptible to physical abuse and
semi-exposed or mechanical damage, eg. car parks and elevator
shafts. Also suitable for humid areas such as
swimming pools. Uses the same injection process as
MK-6/HY, will set typically within 15 minutes.
Monokote ® Z-146 Commercial and High density material suitable for structural
