dance <strong>in</strong> which we are <strong>in</strong>timately awakened <strong>to</strong> moments of contemplative communion with God. The<br />

fundamentals of contemplative prayer <strong>in</strong> which we awaken <strong>to</strong> our true self hidden with Christ <strong>in</strong> God<br />

from be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> universe. And prayer as a call <strong>to</strong> experience our poverty <strong>in</strong> which God’s<br />

Avila <strong>and</strong> John of <strong>the</strong> Cross<br />

This presentation focuses primarily on contemplation as taught by Sa<strong>in</strong>t Theresa of Avila <strong>in</strong> her classic<br />

profound experience of God’s oneness with us <strong>in</strong> all th<strong>in</strong>gs. Mention will also be made <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

of Sa<strong>in</strong>t John of <strong>the</strong> Cross, who was a contemporary <strong>and</strong> friend of Theresa’s. Special attention will be<br />

given <strong>to</strong> John of <strong>the</strong> Cross’ teach<strong>in</strong>gs on <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>in</strong> which contemplative prayer embodies <strong>the</strong> dark<br />

night of <strong>the</strong> soul <strong>in</strong> which, he says, God, <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e lover <strong>and</strong> we, God’s beloved, are trans<strong>for</strong>med <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> engage <strong>in</strong> a life of conscious service.<br />

Wed. June 19, 2013 9:15 AM Obstacles <strong>to</strong> Contemplation – The Struggle <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>Contemplative</strong> Awareness <strong>and</strong> Entry <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Present Moment<br />

There is a sacrament <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> present moment, but <strong>the</strong> present moment is <strong>the</strong> most elusive<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g on earth. In our restless lives we long <strong>for</strong> solitude, but solitude also mostly eludes us. Why? Why is<br />

contemplative awareness such an elusive th<strong>in</strong>g? It is hard <strong>to</strong> be <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> present moment of our lives<br />

because our heartaches, headaches, <strong>and</strong> restlessness consistently bl<strong>in</strong>d us <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> depth <strong>and</strong> richness of<br />

our own experience. An exam<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong> narcissism, pragmatism, <strong>and</strong> excessive restlessness with<strong>in</strong><br />

us that conspires aga<strong>in</strong>st contemplation.<br />

Break-out Speakers<br />

1-A The <strong>Prayer</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Heart: Contemplation <strong>and</strong> Stillness <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian Hesychast Tradition<br />

The great medieval German <strong>the</strong>ologian <strong>and</strong> mystic Meister Eckhart once said that "<strong>the</strong> noblest atta<strong>in</strong>ment<br />

<strong>in</strong> this life is <strong>to</strong> be silent <strong>and</strong> let God work <strong>and</strong> speak with<strong>in</strong>." Hesychasm (from <strong>the</strong> Greek word<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g "stillness" or "rest") is an ancient Christian contemplative tradition designed <strong>to</strong> facilitate this<br />

silence lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> an experiential knowledge of God. Hesychasm is rooted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eastern Christian spiritual<br />

tradition <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>gs of Evagrius Ponticus, Maximus <strong>the</strong> Confessor, Symeon <strong>the</strong> New Theologian<br />

<strong>and</strong> Gregory Palamas. The tradition flourished at Mt. Athos <strong>and</strong> has been transmitted <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> West<br />

through classic texts such as The Way of <strong>the</strong> Pilgrim <strong>and</strong> The Philokalia. Above all, Hesychasm is a way of<br />

prayer <strong>and</strong> contemplation lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> union with God through faithful recitation of <strong>the</strong> Jesus prayer or<br />

"prayer of <strong>the</strong> heart". In this workshop we will exam<strong>in</strong>e this rich contemplative tradition <strong>and</strong> explore <strong>the</strong><br />

ways it can be utilized by women <strong>and</strong> men <strong>to</strong>day. Time permitt<strong>in</strong>g, we will also experience this prayer<br />

tradition through a brief group exercise.<br />

1-B "LIGHTHEARTEDNESS IN BEARING LIGHT" - The Spiritual Gifts of Humor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Contemplative</strong><br />

<strong>Life</strong><br />

In our desire <strong>and</strong> practice <strong>for</strong> a deeper contemplative life, we can often be overwhelmed with outside<br />

distractions of time <strong>and</strong> responsibilities, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ward distractions of perfectionism <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tense ef<strong>for</strong>ts.<br />

The wisdom of <strong>the</strong> great contemplative writers such as Thomas Mer<strong>to</strong>n, St. Teresa, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> mystics<br />

of all faith traditions saw <strong>the</strong> gift of humor as open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> door <strong>to</strong> a deeper <strong>and</strong> more au<strong>the</strong>ntic contemplation.<br />

This workshop will explore <strong>the</strong> gifts of humor as it lightens our own journey <strong>and</strong> widens our<br />

compassion <strong>for</strong> all people.<br />

2-A Teresa of Avila’s Stages of Payer<br />

Teresa of Avila, teacher of prayer, describes <strong>the</strong> stage of prayer <strong>and</strong> spiritual growth. <strong>Prayer</strong> is <strong>the</strong> heart<br />

of Teresa of Avila’s life <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g, her “way of perfection.” <strong>Prayer</strong> means <strong>to</strong> be <strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong>uch with <strong>the</strong> Center<br />

of one’s life, who is “<strong>the</strong> Div<strong>in</strong>e Majesty” who dwells <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> depths of our soul. <strong>Prayer</strong>s is this contact<br />

deep with<strong>in</strong>, where we merge with God <strong>and</strong> are trans<strong>for</strong>med <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> God-centered persons. Teresa teaches<br />

her four mystical degrees <strong>for</strong> prayer us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> symbolism of water<strong>in</strong>g a garden. The four ways of water<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> garden reveal <strong>the</strong> progress of <strong>the</strong> soul <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> growth of prayer. The <strong>Prayer</strong> of Recollection <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Prayer</strong> of Quiet will be covered <strong>in</strong> this workshop. Participants will be <strong>in</strong>vited <strong>to</strong> experience <strong>the</strong>se<br />

ways prayer.<br />

There are three fundamental or foundational tendencies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> American tradition of thought <strong>and</strong> spirituality:<br />

tendencies <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> effect that <strong>the</strong>y have on <strong>the</strong> role of religion, public life <strong>and</strong> personal selfunderst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> American cultural ethos. We will also exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of contemplation<br />

that <strong>the</strong>se three tendencies encourage <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> expression of <strong>the</strong>se modes of contemplation <strong>in</strong> contemporary<br />
