Gundiah Community benefits
from Helping Hands
Helpers from the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints get together with
Gundiah to fix up and clean
up their local hall.
Helpers outnumbered locals and were
aged from 8 to 70-something as they
worked to possum-proof eaves, replace
floorboards, mend benches, neaten the
garden and clean hall walls, kitchen
cupboards and storerooms.
David Carney, recently elected president
of the Gundiah Hall said the help
was much appreciated as the old hall is
in need of much fixing. “We have only a
small group of members so far, and we
really appreciate the extra man hours to
get things moving.”
The Gundiah Hall was built in 1922 and
celebrates its 90th birthday in November
this year. It has had a few years of
neglect, a condition the newly formed
committee wishes to rectify. They have
quite a job ahead of them but are starting
with repainting the interior after
recent record flooding warranted insurance
payments to the fact. The working
bee by locals and the church group
was the first step in achieving this end.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
-Day Saints participates in ‘community
service’ projects on a semi-annual basis
and was only too pleased to have
this project suggested to them. Church
members came from the greater Gympie
area and brought tools and offered
lots of elbow-grease to get the jobs
done. “It is great to offer our skills and
manpower in a situation like this,”said
Bishop Brett Woolley. “It is great experience
for our families and being able to
achieve something good on top of that
for the Gundiah Hall is the bonus.”
Handy Hire in Maryborough donated
the painters trestles free of charge.
The Gundiah Hall Secretary said, “It was
good to feel that someone else cares
about our little hall besides us. It is good
to see the community spirit increase in
our local community too. We have some
good eggs around here who are always
willing to lend a hand.” SGK
COMMUNITY
CHrONICLe
GUNDIAH COMMUNITY INCORPORATE
Good day readers! Time sure flies when
one is supposed to be retired. They told
me it was easy–just go fishing when you
want. So last Saturday, we did just that.
Two of my mates and I took the boat
down to Petrie Park and 4 hours later
one catfish was the catch of the day.
I’m wondering if Landcare Marilyn has
asked all the Mary River Turtles to advise
the fish to hibernate until the fishing
competition on 27/28 October... if that’s
the case then I might have to fish then.
Annual Baiting. On the advice of Col
Zemek, FCRC Pest officer, we should
bait again in February as well as September.
Pauline K was upset this year
as she lost 4 mature geese and one calf,
which based on the evidence, was a dog
pack. I had 16 baits taken in 48 hours.
Myles Long. It was not good to hear
of district legend Myles Long’s tragic
tractor accident. Our thoughts go out
to Marion and her family. It is also a reminder
to us all on the land that machinery
has no feelings, so treat with care.
Croquet. Jean and her team are playing
Croquet each Sunday on the grounds
and if you fancy playing or learning the
basics ring Jean or Geoff on 41293293 or
just turn up on Sunday morning. Look
out for a day coming up with the Maryborough
Club professionals.
Yolande Bromet. On behalf of all of
the community I take this opportunity
to say a few words of thanks to a brave
young lady, who with her family’s backing,
saw a new future for Bauple and has
put it on the map again, as did ‘Mary
the Fairy’ for years until her retirement.
Yolande promoted the Hinterland Markets
against some locals trying to saboutage
such, she promoted the Men’s
Shed, she promoted the Museum and
directed busloads of visitors to the museum
from her nut cracking demonstrations.
Her family brought the Doctor to
town and the specialists to the purple
building. I say to you Yolande, don’t give
up on your ambitions, you are what this
country needs, the knockers will just
fade away as they always have and always
will.
Bus Trip–Saturday October 6th is
our annual bus trip! We are heading to
Caboulture Heritage Village via the Hinterland,
$5, ring Pauline on 41292504 for
further details. Trevor Keightley, President
Myles Stratford Long 1936-2012. The Gundiah Rural Fire Brigade
wish to extend our condolences
to Marion & Family on the sad
passing of Myles Long.
On Saturday 8th September
saw the passing of a local legend
known by all in the past
Tiaro Shire.
Myles was 75. He was born 21st September
1936 and raised on the family
farm at Chatsworth, attending the local
school till year 7. At age 14 he started his
working life as a bean picker on Keith
Allen’s farm, then moved to his sister
Betty’s farm at Mulgeldie near Monto
to work in the local Saw Mill. He then
took on a new job at Cooroy Saw Mill
for a few years, returning to Chatsworth
to work on the family farm with his
brother Harry.
He met Marion at a local dance in 1958
and they were married on 28th March
1959. For a couple of years they managed
a farm at Chatsworth owned by
Marion’s parents, later buying the farm
at Bauple/Gootchie where they have
lived for the past 48 years. For many
years they grew a variety of small crops
and employed people to pick at harvest
time.
Myles was an active member in a number
of local organizations: from 1985 till
Pictured above left: Myles Long.
Above: Tiaro Shire Councillors 2006, Myles
Long is pictured 2nd front row on left..
2008 was a councilor in the Tiaro Shire
until amalgamation and in 2004 he became
deputy mayor.
Mr Long was an active board member
of Gunalda Fruit & Vegetable Growers
Association, was also Glenwood Progress
Association chairman and Bauple
Band Hall secretary for five terms.
Myles had been an active supporter of
the Gundiah Rural Fire Brigade & Fire
Warden since 2010. He was Chairman
of the Brigade from 1997-2009 (12yrs) &
Vice President from 1995-1997.
Beside all their achievements Myles and
Marion also established the Service Station
and Store at Glenwood, until they
sold the business in 2009 and retired at
the age of 73.
Myles leaves behind his wife Marion
and their four children–Gary, David,
and twins Sally & Wendy, their partners,
seven grandchildren & three great
grandchildren who will all miss him
dearly. Rest in Peace Myles.
compiled byTrevor Keightley.
Strong future
for Rural Firies
The Minister for Police and Community
Safety Jack Dempsey announced that
the Newman Government and the Rural
Fire Brigades Association of Queensland
(RFBAQ) have agreed on initiatives to
ensure rural volunteer firefighters are
empowered and equipped to protect
their communities into the future.
“Under the agreed new model, there will
be no closure of any Rural Fire Service
(RFS) area offices,” Mr Dempsey said.
“Unfortunately as a part of this process,
there will be a reduction in the number
of full time equivalent positions, but this
will be limited to executive and administration
areas, and will not take place
until after the fire season in March 2013.”
Mr Dempsey asked that the review of
the RFS be completed by February 2013.
“The RFBAQ and Minister for Police
and Community Safety are both united
in maintaining all Rural Operations Area
Offices across Queensland,” Mr Garrahy
said. “This allows Rural Fire Brigades to
have support and certainty going into
the worst bushfire season in more than
40 years.”
Mr Garrahy said that an earlier proposal
A Fresh Breath
Of Air Ripples
Through Bauple
Bauple’s new Progress Association
(BPA) invites community
members from Bauple & its associated
Districts to unite for a
progressive future.
BPA represents Bauple, Forest View, Talegalla,
Rossendale, and encompass the
area through to the western border of
Mt Bauple National Park.
In 2010 The Bauple Vision Plan was
formulated amongst the local community
extensively and its results were referred
to the Council for consideration.
The Plan was approved and the strategy
was then adopted by the Fraser Coast
Regional Council. 1
As we do not wish to see the community’s
previous energy and input go by
the wayside, one of the first jobs of the
Progress Association is to revisit and realign
these efforts with today’s schedule.
Not Just Another Faction: The
Bauple Progress Association is a notfor-profit
association that desires to promote,
advance and secure both Bauple’s
unique and collective wellbeing for the
imminent future… which will soon be
today! We understand that it is essential
for representatives from ALL groups
and cultures existing within Bauple & its
Districts to collaborate on an impartial,
united front. We welcome to the membership
opinions of groups and individuals
equally that may be able to aide
in any aspect of what it takes to promote
progress in our Community.
Membership is vital: Hoping to see
an end to our fractured neighbourhood,
and complaints that a fraction of voices
are being heard, BPA intends to have
quarterly meetings where your vote will
be required to help liaise with the government
on important issues that may
affect all Bauple & its Districts’ residents.
Without membership, your vote cannot
the Gundiah Gazette and a great deal of
Jillian Wright of Bauple Day Spa. “Both
women and men were interested in
welcoming the new ‘Hinterland Spiritual
Centre’ into the Bauple area, so we
plan to have our first meeting mid October.”
People of all ages are welcome to join in
Nosh’s Book
Launched
Over 200 people attended the launch of
‘All Aboard the Nutmobile’ at the International
Macadamia Symposium held
in Brisbane last month. ‘All Aboard the
Nutmobile’ is a children’s picture book
aimed at readers 4 to 8 years of age.
Ian McConachie, chairman of the Macadamia
Conservation Trust, introduced
the book together with Em Horsfield,
illustrator Glen Singleton and members
of the Macadamia House team.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to those
involved as well as those who joined us
in celebrating the launch,” said Macadamia
House owner, Yolande Bromet.
‘We are delighted with the response we
have received to date, with one reader
referring to the book as Dr. Suess meets
an Aussie version of Thomas the Tank
Engine!’, said Yolande.
The book is also available for sale online
at www.macadamiahouse.com so get
Tiaro’s Sons.
This month’s Salute to the Diggers
Herbert Arthur Snell
Qx21253 PRIVATE – AUSTRALIAN ARMY
Herbert (known as Arthur) was born
31st March 1919 to Charles and Ethel
Snell at Wooroolin, South Burnett. Arthur
and his 6 brothers and sisters–Viv,
Frank, June, Les, Muriel and Trea– had a
happy hard working childhood on their
farm. He attended the Kenilworth State
School and later played cricket for the
local team, worked at Kenilworth Sawmill
and other farms in the district.
Arthur enlisted in the Army at Gympie
on 20th May 1941 at age 22 and was
drafted to Singapore. He was taken
prisoner at the prisoner-of-war camp
at Moulmein Burma with his friend
McGhie. He was being transferred on
the prison ship Rakuyo Maru with 1300
prisoners to Japan for labour work, when
it was sunk by an American Submarine
on the 13th September 1944 and many
of the prisoners were drowned including
Arthur. LEST WE FORGET
Cycle, kayak & fishing on Mary.
It was inspiring to watch the
Cycle Qld team build and operate
the overnight city at the
Tiaro Recreation Grounds.
We take our hats off to the 900 + bike
riders of all ages and sizes. Bus tours
to Bauple and Petrie Park were popular.
However we were overwhelmed
by the interest in the guided kayak
tour of the river. Two participants
were over 70, such enthusiasm even
after spending all morning in the
bike saddle riding from Hervey Bay to
Tiaro. Many local community groups
benefited financially from their visit.
the river is low and clear and
we are hoping for a great family fishing
weekend. There will be Senior,
Junior and Family prizes in numerous
categories, so a great chance to take
home some good quality prizes. Everyone
who registers, goes into the
