Fifth One–Week Management Development Programme on
Strategic Port Management
for Senior Management
October 24-30, 2010
Ports have a key role in facilitating trade, playing a critical interface between marine and land based transportation. They are part
of international supply chain networks, the effectiveness of which drives trade competitiveness.
There are more than 2000 ports around the world, from small ports handling a few hundred tons a year to large multi purpose
facilities handling more than 500 million tons a year.
Total world port traffic in 2008 was around 16.4 billion tons. While the overall traffic has been growing at 6 to 8% per annum,
world container port traffic has been expanding at 10-12% per annum during the recent years. In 2008, the figure had crossed
500 million TEUs.
World port traffic is made of liquid bulk (45%), dry bulk (23%) and general cargo including containers (32%)
Developing countries are the major engines for port development today, fuelled by their high economic growth rates.
ùMore than 80% of trade with origins or destinations in developing countries, in tonnage, is through seas.
ùIn 2005, world total freight payment as a proportion to total import value was about 5.9%. This figure was about 4.8% for
developed countries and 7.7% for developing countries, reflecting the relative efficiencies in the logistics chain.
ùThe port scenario in India is potentially on a high growth track, playing a significant role in the economic development of the
country.
ùIndia is facing galloping growth in international trade (over 25% compounded annual growth rate during 2003-04 to 2008-
09). Ninety five per cent of India's trade by volume and 77% by value move through Indian ports.
ùThere are 12 major port administrations. There are over 187 non-major ports. In 2009-10, Indian ports handled over 800 mt
of traffic (560 mt at major ports and over 240 mt at non-major ports). In 2008-09, it was 733 mt (531 mt at major ports and
202 mt at non-major ports).
Ports have major bottlenecks, resulting in a 12% freight payment as a proportion of total import value. Significant efforts are on to
develop infrastructure and services at ports, including through privatization.
Given the above and in the context of
ùspecific needs of multimodal transport and effective supply chains and
ùprivatization of ports and the increased involvement of private players in port activities.
There is a need to evolve strategic perspectives for ports driven by strategic thinking among the senior management, for which
