Hospital Auxiliary President 

I am delighted to welcome you to Perspectives magazine in support of the Mount Sinai 

Hospital Auxiliary 55th Anniversary Ball. 

The women who started the Auxiliary in 1953 would be so proud of all that we have 

accomplished — increasing funding to Mount Sinai, executing sophisticated fundraising initiatives, 

creating our annual Perspectives magazine, and continuing to bring dedicated and passionate women 

together to make it all happen. 

I am proud to announce that we have now completed the Auxiliary’s $3.5-million Healthy 

Babies pledge, supporting Mount Sinai’s world-renowned Lawrence and Frances Bloomberg Centre 

for Women’s and Infants’ Health. Together, we have helped purchase much-needed isolettes for the 

Valentine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a new fetal monitoring system for the Labour and Delivery 

suites, and are helping fund critical fetal health research at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute 

of Mount Sinai Hospital. 

Completing our pledge is a major milestone for the more than 1,300 members of the Auxiliary and 

our hardworking, innovative team. It simply would not have been possible without the commitment 

of our extraordinary volunteers, and the generous support of our sponsors and donors. 

My sincere thank-you goes out to all of the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary members. Special 

thanks to Vice Presidents Gail Gerstein, Angela Feldman, Merle Rosenhek, and Catherine Bratty; to 

Wendy Switzer Myles, Ball Chair; and to volunteer extraordinaire, Jeannie Tanenbaum. Your hard

Message from The Ball Chair 

The 55th Anniversary Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary Ball was a tremendous success, and I 

extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who volunteered, sponsored, and attended this 

fabulous evening. 

It was a great honour to have served as the 2008 Auxiliary Ball’s Chair, not only because 

this year marked the Ball’s 55th Anniversary (making it one of the longest-running events of 

its kind in Toronto), but also because it coincided with the culmination of an extraordinarily successful 

campaign, one which raised over $3.5 million to help those of Mount Sinai’s tiniest and most vulnerable 

patients: our babies. 

The planning of the Ball was an exciting, rewarding, and enjoyable experience. I am grateful for 

the support of the many sponsors and donors who contributed to its success, as well as to our dedicated 

team of volunteers and staff. Because of your Big Hearts and your Bright Minds, more babies fortunate 

enough to be born at Mount Sinai Hospital will have healthier, and therefore brighter, futures. 

My great thanks goes to Auxiliary President Carole Grafstein who provided leadership, support, 

and friendship; to Corporate Sponsorship Chair Mia Louis, Menu Chair Beverley Gordon, Benefactor

Perspectives Magazine 

We are pleased to present the 2008 edition of Perspectives magazine. This issue is a tribute 

to the many individuals, families, and organizations that support the Mount Sinai Hospital 

Auxiliary and helped us complete our $3.5-million Healthy Babies pledge. Fulfilling our 

commitment is a tremendous accomplishment, and the funds raised by producing Perspectives 

are integral to our success. 

To that end, we would like to extend a huge thank-you to Perspectives magazine sponsor, 

Tribute Communities, for their generous contribution. A special thank-you to Lisa Colt, 

Director of the Auxiliary, and her dedicated staff, and to the Hospital Graphics and New 

Media Department — with special thanks to Linda Stern of that department — for diligently 

producing such an excellent publication. Finally, we extend our great gratitude to Wendy 

Switzer Myles, for her dedication and commitment to the success of Perspectives magazine. 

This year, Perspectives features a series of articles that highlight Mount Sinai’s excellence 

in women’s and infants’ health. We are proud to tell you about nine doctors who work in 

the Valentine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on page 136. They collectively donated more 

than $70,000 toward Right From the Start: Mount Sinai’s Campaign for Women’s and Infants’ 

Health, which demonstrates their commitment to the redevelopment of the Hospital. 

As a testament to the full range of care that Mount Sinai Hospital provides to women 

throughout their lives, Perspectives also features a story about the compassionate care invariably offered 

at the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre on page 118. The Staff at this remarkable Centre treat patients 

holistically, using innovative therapies, including yoga, to help women continue to heal even after their 

medical treatment is complete. 

On page 96, is an article about Matt Dusk, the wonderful feature performer at the Auxiliary’s 

55th Anniversary Ball, held on April 29 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. The Auxiliary is so proud to 

host this glamorous Toronto tradition, and, as the cover clearly shows, we are especially excited to have 

marked the 55th Anniversary of this outstanding fundraising event. 

On page 132, you’ll find an article which discusses Dr. John Kingdom’s accomplishments over the 

past year. As holder of the Rose Torno Chair in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, his work adds to a new body 

of knowledge that clinicians around the world will use to deal with placental malfunction. Finally, on page 

114, a look ahead to the Auxiliary’s next pledge in support of new information technology initiatives at 

Mount Sinai — initiatives that will enhance efficiency and patient safety throughout the Hospital. The 

Auxiliary is thrilled to take on this new fundraising challenge, and looks forward to continuing to work 

with our loyal and generous supporters. Together, we can accomplish new fundraising goals that will 

ultimately benefit all the patients who rely on Mount Sinai’s excellent care, both now and in the future.

The Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary has earned a special place in all our hearts. Since its 

founding by Rose Torno in 1953, the Auxiliary has grown to become the largest hospital 

auxiliary in North America, with more than 1,300 members. These Bright Minds and 

Big Hearts form a sisterhood that helps raise money to support the Hospital’s highest 

priorities, including excellent patient care, teaching, and research. 

Through their outstanding special events and other fundraising programs, the 

Auxiliary is one of the largest single donors to Mount Sinai. This year, the Auxiliary’s 

55th Anniversary Ball helped to complete its ambitious $3.5-million Healthy Babies 

pledge. This pledge purchased new isolettes, a Fetal Monitoring System for the Labour/ 

Delivery Suites of the High Risk Maternity Unit, and helped to fund imperative fetal 

health research at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital.

Lunenfeld Research Institute 

Congratulations to the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary on completing its $3.5 million 

Healthy Babies pledge. This is a tremendous accomplishment and we are thrilled to 

celebrate the success of these Bright Minds and Big Hearts. 

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Auxiliary President Carole 

Grafstein and all of the Auxiliary members for directing a large part of their pledge 

to the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital. The Auxiliary’s 

continuing support funded a $1 million Chair in Fetal and Maternal Health Research 

at the Centre of Excellence in Women’s and Infants’ Health, helping to promote 

leading-edge research at the Hospital and the Lunenfeld. 

This support is enabling scientists, clinicians, and caregivers to develop and 

deliver new treatment strategies that lead to improved quality of life and healthier 

outcomes for mothers and their infants, our tiniest and most vulnerable patients. 

The Auxiliary’s funding of a Chair comes in addition to a $2 million gift which 

endowed the Rose Torno Chair in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Dr. John Kingdom, 

who has held that Chair since its creation in 2003, has made remarkable progress 

investigating ways to detect placental damage, a problem that impacts approximately 

50 per cent of women during their maternal lives. 

Once again, we extend our warmest congratulations to the Auxiliary on a successful 

fundraising campaign, and on a very memorable 55th Anniversary Auxiliary Ball.

2008 Ball Benefactors’ Dinner 

The annual Ball Benefactors’ Dinner is held each year to demonstrate our deep 

appreciation to our most generous sponsors for their support of the Mount Sinai 

Hospital. This year, it was held on Sunday, April 13, at the African-inspired 

restaurant, Greg Couillard’s Manyata Courtyard Café in Hazelton Lanes. This 

ultra-stylish restaurant, offering outstanding food to match the chic décor, 

created the ambience to provide an evening to remember. 

Auxiliary President Carole Grafstein and Ball Chair Wendy Switzer Myles 

welcomed and thanked all guests in attendance. They also expressed their gratitude 

to Bonnie Bloomberg and Samantha Brickman, the Benefactors’ Dinner Co- 

Chairs, for organizing all aspects of the evening, as well as to chef extraordinaire 

Greg Couillard and owner Lee Sannella for hosting the delicious dinner. Guests

Spin Master Holiday Toy Sale 

A special one-day toy sale was held in the Hospital lobby 

on Friday, November 23, 2007, with proceeds to be 

credited with the money raised through LIV BLU. The 

toys were provided by Spin Master and the pre-holiday 

sale was an enormous success. The huge product donation 

was completely sold out within a couple of hours and an 

additional $3,300 was raised for the Hospital. The Auxiliary 

wishes to extend a very special thank you to Spin Master 

Toys for their outstanding generosity.

guests in attendance.

giving it a cool blue glow. A special 

feature was the LIV BLU mural that was 

painted throughout the night by Russell’s 

art students. Tiffany & Co. was LIV 

BLU’s official Jewellery Sponsor with 

a stunning display of their distinctive 

blue boxes in the silent auction area. 

Other luxury items from Contemporary 

Fashion Sponsor Holt Renfrew were 

auctioned off along with many other 

prizes valued at more than $3,000. 

The $100,000 in net proceeds 

benefited the final phase of the 

Auxiliary’s $3.5 million Healthy Babies 

pledge in support of fetal health 

research at the Samuel Lunenfeld 

Research Institute.

Behind Closed Doors 2007: 


The 2007 event was a fantastic success!! 

Inspired by similar events in Basel, 

Switzerland, New York, Miami, and 

Chicago, the Mount Sinai Hospital 

Foundation was proud to present the 

second annual Behind Closed Doors: 

An Entrée to Private Collections on 

October 21, 2007. 

Last year, the event kicked off 

with a sumptuous brunch at the Four 

Seasons Hotel, after which just under 

300 participants boarded luxury coach 

buses. Two groups of 20 participants 

on each bus visited four venues over 

the course of the afternoon. The groups

were escorted through 27 of Toronto’s 

most prestigious private and corporate 

collections to view breathtaking 

paintings, photography, sculpture, tribal art, and antiques. At each 

venue, the participants were personally guided by the collector or, 

in several circumstances, by professional docents, offering a rare 

insight into the remarkable stories behind each collection. 

Behind Closed Doors raised over $230,000 in support of vital 

cancer care and research for the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre at 

Mount Sinai Hospital.

Matt Dusk Performs at the 55th Mount Sinai 

Hospital Auxiliary Ball 

Matt Dusk has a soft spot for babies, and for the Mount 

Sinai Hospital Auxiliary. 

The Juno-nominated crooner performed at LIV BLU 

in November 2007 and again at the Auxiliary’s glamorous 

55th anniversary black-tie Ball on April 29 at the Fairmont 

Royal York Hotel – both in support of the Auxiliary’s recently 

completed $3.5 million Healthy Babies pledge. Their pledge 

provides isolettes for the Valentine Neonatal Intensive Care 

Unit, a new fetal monitoring system for the Labour and 

Delivery Unit, and support for fetal health research. 

“I am thrilled to help raise much-needed money for 

Mount Sinai,” says Dusk. “This is especially the case since 

my performances at two Auxiliary events supported the 

Hospital’s tiniest patients and helped the Auxiliary achieve 

its fundraising goal.” 

Also helping to raise funds during the Ball were Las 

Vegas singer/impressionist Tom Stevens and an exciting 

silent and live auction. Guests walked away with prizes 

including a week-long trip to one of Switzerland’s most 

elite ski resort-hotels, a full-length mink coat, a ten-day 

stay at an exclusive Maui condominium, a summer at 

legendary Camp Timberlane, and a private CTV helicopter 

ride. Luxurious raffle prizes, provided courtesy of Royal de 

Versailles, include two 18-karat yellow gold ladies’ cuffstyle 

bangles valued at more than $30,000. As an added 

bonus, a surprise guest appearance was made by Tracii 

Guns, Paul Black, and Chad Stewart of famed rock group 

L.A. Guns. The band generously donated a guitar signed 

by all members of the group as a live auction prize. 

“Completing our pledge is an exciting accomplishment 

for all the women in our Auxiliary,” says Carole Grafstein, 

Auxiliary President. “We would like to extend our sincerest 

thanks to CIBC World Markets as Presenting Benefactor, 

RioCan as Evening Benefactor, and CTVglobemedia as our 

Media Partner for helping us achieve our fundraising goal. We

Annual Spring Meeting

The Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary’s Annual Meeting was held on a beautiful, 

warm Wednesday in the first week of June at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. 

Following a lovely lunch, the business portion of the meeting was conducted 

by President Barbara Hennick. 

Joseph Mapa, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Hospital presented the 

Rose Torno Bursary to Michael Campbell to pursue or continue his studies in a 

research project or formal education. 

Barbara Hennick presented a cheque to Lawrence Bloomberg, Chair 

of the Mount Sinai Hospital Board, in the amount of $1.672 million for 

the Auxiliary’s 2006-2007 contribution to the Hospital in support of the 

Auxiliary’s Healthy Babies pledge. Barbara also presented a cheque in the 

amount of $10,000 to Lawrence Bloomberg on behalf of the Auxiliary, for 

the Education Bursary it supports. 

Barbara Hennick installed the inaugural Honourary Board to recognize 

board members who have demonstrated an enduring commitment to the 

Auxiliary for dedication and leadership. Honourary Board members include: 

Fran Axmith, Miriam Kerzner, Tillie Leslie, Pearl Stone, Ida Fox, Adele Sager, 

Ruth Smith, Alma Waldman, and the late Yvonne Davies. 

Heather Gotlieb discharged the 2005-2007 officers and thanked them for 

their service. She read out the slate of officers for the 2007-2009 term. 

Hinda Silber was invited to install Carole Grafstein as the 26th President 

of the Auxiliary.

Fundraising Programs Through the Auxiliary 

After 55 years, the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary has 

been successful not only in creating financially thriving 

and memorable events, but also by establishing fundraising 

projects that are ongoing throughout the year. The success 

of these programs is due to the commitment of a dedicated 

group of volunteer Chairs and the support that they receive 

from the Mount Sinai Hospital community. 

Teddy Bear’s Picnic on the 10th floor maternity ward 

Labour of Love is a program devotedly chaired by Lori 

Rosenthal. Established in 1994 and maintained through the 

generosity of Marcy and Leonard Abramsky and the artistry 

and imagination of Ian Leventhal, Labour of Love offers 

individuals the opportunity to commemorate a birth or life 

event with the name and birthdate of a loved one on bronze 

teddy bear-shaped plaques. The lovely Teddy Bear’s Picnic 

theme adorns the hallways of the 10th floor maternity ward 

and an expansion of the program is on the way. A Labour 

of Love plaque is a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of a 

child, a birthday, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or any other special 

occasion. The funds raised through Labour of Love benefit 

perinatal research at Mount Sinai Hospital. 

Through the loving care, hard work, and dedication 

of Co-Chairs Simone Bronfman, Karen Goldlist and 

Cynthia Rosenthal, the Rexall Pharma Plus Baby’s First 

Comforts has grown from a fledgling charitable endeavour 

to an established philanthropic 

program. Generously supported by 

The Katz Group and the Zuckerman 

Charitable Foundation, the program 

provided just over 70 layettes for atrisk 

families. The layettes are packed 

with basic necessities vital to the care, 

safety, and health of newborns. Each 

package is distributed discreetly to 

families deemed by Mount Sinai 

Hospital’s Social Work Department 

to be in great financial need. 

The Living Legacy Endowment 

Fund is a timeless gift that keeps on 

giving. It provides financial stability 

for the organization, makes long-range 

planning possible, and protects the 

organization in the years when other 

revenue is reduced. Only the income 

from the invested funds is used for specific Hospital-related 

projects and critical needs. 

The Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary created an affiliate 

arrangement with Somerset Flowers and Gifts called Give 

a Gift Twice. Patrons purchase floral arrangements or 

gift baskets through www.somersetgifts.com, or by 

calling 416-446-1771. Somerset donates 10% of the 

sale back to the Auxiliary as a fundraising initiative. Floral 

arrangements and gift baskets are priced lower than at retail 

outlets in order to provide patrons with the incentive to 

use the program. All purchases can be delivered throughout 

the GTA. With every gift of flowers or goodies that you 

send to someone special, you are also helping to support 

the Hospital.

Advancing E-meds For Patient Safety: 

The Auxiliary’s New Pledge

pledge complete, the Mount 


is embarking on a new 

fund-raising challenge to improve patient safety. The 

$2 million pledge will support two new and exciting 

information technology initiatives: support for the 

Electronic Patient Record Program and the Electronic 

Medication Dispensing Project. 

“Information technology offers the ability to change the 

way we do business, enhance the quality of care and patient 

safety, and link our patients to other points of care,” explains 

Marlene Robinson, the Hospital’s Vice President and Chief 

Information Officer. “It gives our clinicians much better tools 

by providing them with a comprehensive knowledge of the 

patient’s medical information,” she says. 

Electronic ordering of medication and documentation 

of administration to patients is a key priority of Mount Sinai’s 

patient safety agenda. The Auxiliary’s support for this 

program will ensure that information about prescription and 

administration of medications are brought together in a single 

record for every in-patient, beginning with the Cardiology 

Department. All prescriptions will be verified against patient 

information and safety-checked for their allergies and possible 

adverse interactions, and administration of medication will 

be electronically tracked. In addition, upon release from the 

Hospital, patients will have a record of all medications they 

have taken to bring with them to their next point of care. 

The Auxiliary will also support Electronic Patient 

Records, a new system being used by Mount Sinai’s 

Granovsky Gluskin Family Medicine Centre of the Ray D. 

Wolfe Department of Family Medicine. The system collects 

patient information in a way that is easily retrievable, secure, 

can be shared across the health-care team, and enhances 

collaborative team-based care. The system eliminates the 

need to decipher handwriting and enables staff to run 

reports, houses the results of lab tests, and tracks people who 

need immunization or other potentially life-saving tests.

Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre 

Cares for Women Even after the 

Cancer is Gone

When Cynthia* walked outside to meet her husband, he seemed surprised. “You 

look taller!” he said. Cynthia had just attended a yoga class, one of the many 

complimentary services offered to women receiving treatment for breast cancer 

at the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital. 

Cynthia was using these yoga sessions to help her relax, increase her range 

of motion, and restore her confidence in her body. Of course, she hadn’t actually

and her head held higher. 

Opened in 1995, the Centre offers women the emotional support and medical 

attention they need in a dignified and discreet environment. Today, the Centre counts 

more than 33,000 visits per year, and its approach to healing seems to work. 

“I think our personalized approach works because we are a small, contained centre,” 

says Linda Muraca, Nurse Clinician at Mount Sinai’s AstraZeneca Breast Health Program. 

“We offer a lot of support for our patients during their journey with breast cancer.” 

The Centre offers everything from health and nutrition programs, therapeutic touch 

massage, and a resource library, to hair and make-up tips. Even the smallest details, such 

as the warm lighting and the soft music playing in the background, have been developed 

with consideration for the patients’ sensitivities. 

The list of patient-centred programs goes on – even after the cancer is gone. 

“We are dedicated to caring for the well-being of our patients even after they’ve 

finished treatment with us,” says Dr. Pamela Goodwin, Director of Oncology at the 

Centre. “We have developed a program to offer healthy diet and a lifestyle choice after 

initial treatment has been completed. We hope that this will empower women to take time 

to look after themselves and grow healthier.”

Patient care at the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre was enhanced after the 11th 

annual Scotiabank Drive fore a Cure ladies golf tournament helped bring the 

event’s cumulative funds raised to date to the amount of $1.63 million. 

“This is eleven years of support for the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre 

and we are on our way to raising $2 million to fuel breast cancer research and 

improve patient care,” said Tiana Koffler Boyman, Marvelle Koffler’s daughter. 

“This tournament is a financial lifeline to the breast centre and I’m proud to be 

a part of it.” 

Golfers battled the 40-degree temperature to play the challenging course at 

The Club at Bond Head before settling down to a gourmet dinner and silent and 

live auctions in the air-conditioned club house. 

“The money raised here today – by women, and for women – will not 

only support patient care, teaching, and research at the Marvelle Koffler Breast 

Centre, it will help improve the quality of life for each and every patient that 

walks through the Centre’s doors,” said Joan Stevens, Vice President Donor 

Relations and Events for the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation. 

“Your help today allows us to care for individuals rather than illnesses, and 

will continue to fund the innovative research and care that will one day lead to 

a cure.”

New research at Mount Sinai Hospital 

has found that a placental ultrasound 

can help doctors determine whether 

certain moms-to-be can expect a 

healthy pregnancy. This finding was 

the result of a recent study led by 

Dr. John Kingdom, Maternal-Fetal 

Medicine Specialist at Mount Sinai 

Hospital and Rose Torno Chair 

in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. 

He demonstrated that a simple, non-invasive, real-time 

ultrasound exam can reassure high-risk women that they 

will likely have a full-term, normal pregnancy. 

Dr. Kingdom and his team looked at 60 high-risk 

women with low maternal blood flow and examined their 

placentas and showed that women with reduced blood flow 

as well as abnormal placental shape and size were more likely 

 

to see complications such as pre-mature birth or stillbirth. 

However, women in this situation with thin, long, and 

healthy placentas could mostly expect their babies to 

develop towards term without any major complications. 

“The safety of all mothers and babies is always our top 

priority,” says Dr. Kingdom. 

Established in 2003 by a generous Auxiliary 

endowment in honour of Auxiliary Founder Rose Torno, 

this Chair continues to support the Hospital’s ability 

to discover and provide the best patient care today and 

tomorrow. The Chair reflects the incredible vision of the 

founding members of the Hospital so many years ago and 

has helped to enable Mount Sinai to become a world leader 

in identifying and developing treatment options for women 

experiencing medium to high-risk pregnancies.

Renew Sinai gets a Big Gift from Neonatologists

The Bright Minds and Big Hearts of Mount Sinai’s 

Neonatology team in the Valentine Neonatal Intensive 

Care Unit (NICU) are ensuring that our tiniest infants 

receive the best care possible in their first few days of life. 

In addition to compassion and expertise, the 

Neonatology team has given a big gift to their littlest babies 

to make the NICU space a better healing environment for 

infants and their families.

They donated $70,200 to support Renew Sinai, the 

Hospital’s redevelopment project that will modernize our 

facilities and see the addition of six new floors to expand 

space for our world-renowned Lawrence and Frances 

Bloomberg Centre for Women’s and Infants’ Health, as 

well as to accommodate ambulatory clinics, a pharmacy 

department, and other support services.
