U of T docs at war and peace
THANKS TO OUR DONORS • DOC TALK • CREATE A CLASS AWARD

TREASURER’S REPORT Dr. Flavio Habal (Class of 1977)
Adding up a successful year
Your investment in the best and
brightest grows significantly
Iam pleased to submit highlights of the
Medical Alumni Association financial
report for the year 2005/2006. As a key
part of its mandate to assist the undergrad
student body in financial matters, the MAA
provided the following to our students:
• $193,000 in interest-free student loans
• $231,773 in total awards and student
support
• $125,500 in international health
scholarships, including: $30,000 for undergrad
medical student international health
electives; $40,000 for summer research
scholarships and $40,000 for resident travel
grants for international health electives
In 2005/2006 this translated into direct
and indirect help for numerous students,
an exceptional achievement made possible
by your financial and moral support.
Total 2006 calendar year donations
were $522, 674, including gifts from direct
mail campaigns; securities; bequests; the
MAA/OMF Ontario Medical Student
Bursary fund pledge donations; and
class reunion donations. Thanks to
you, donations increased by 26 percent
from the previous calendar year!
Also thanks to you, as of December 31,
2006, we completed our $500,000 pledge
to be matched to $1,000,000, provided by
the Ontario Student Opportunities Trust
Fund II matching fund through the university,
all targeted for undergraduate medical
student bursaries.
In terms of our investments, we continued
with BMO Nesbitt Burns in our tradition
of a conservative strategy, balanced
between equities and fixed income. As we
have always required cash flow to maintain
our bursaries and student support, the result
has been a slightly smaller amount to invest.
Here are some highlights of our holdings for
2005/06:
• As of December 31, 2006, our investment
portfolio totalled $2,914,839.
• In calendar year 2006, our return on
investments year-over-year was 9.28 percent
compared to last year’s 5.93 percent, significantly
better than in previous years. This
was due to the fact that over the past
year we decreased our American holdings
in favour of Canadian equities.
All of these numbers reflect a successful
year, thanks in large part to your unwavering
support. This is vitally important,
since there is another number that I must
mention: $17,608.00. That is the tuition
our students must pay per year, and of
course does not include books or living
expenses. While many of us faced debt
You helped
to provide
over $550,000
in total student
support
coming out of medical school, the
prospect of graduating with a mortgagesized
claim on our future is daunting, to
say the least. (Medical students graduate
with an average size debt of just under
$100,000.) You help us to help deserving
students, ensuring that we continue to
attract the best and the brightest.
Beyond our significant financial and
moral commitment to medical students,
the MAA plays a large role in helping you
to stay connected with other U of T alumni.
We support class reunions, the production
of this magazine, MAA Matters; and the
annual MAA Convocation Banquet, where
the graduation classes celebrating their 50-,
60-, 65- and 70-year anniversaries, and convocating
students, are honoured.
All of this would not be possible without
the volunteer efforts of our board members
and of Ruth Gillings, our administrator/
manager. As always, she keeps on top of
our vibrant roster of alumni activities, and
a diligent watch on our books. Thanks to
Ruth and her assistant, Julienne Ramos,
and our board for their tremendous work.
And again, I would like to especially thank
all of our donors. You’ll see their names
beginning on page 8. If you haven’t made a
donation I respectfully ask you to consider
making one today. It’s one of the most
satisfying ways I know of giving back. ■
DEAN’S MESSAGE Dr. Catharine Whiteside (Class of 1975)
A tradition of service
In times of war and peace our
grads make a difference
Our Faculty mission is to
prepare future health leaders,
contribute to our communities
and improve the health of
individuals and populations, through the
discovery, application and communication
of knowledge. Throughout our history,
our medical graduates have embodied that
mission, and their commitment to innovation
and excellence in health care has contributed
to improved patient outcomes
and an ever increasing body of knowledge
that has had an impact across the globe.
As you will read in these pages, our alumni
have a long and distinguished history of
contributions in times of conflict. Physicians
from our medical school have cared for the
wounded under intense and stressful conditions,
from the First World War to present
conflicts in Afghanistan. While serving in
times of conflict, many of our alumni have
also pioneered significant new medical treatments.
These innovations include Norman
Bethune’s mobile blood-transfusion unit
during the Spanish Civil War, Fulton Risdon
and A. Ross Tilley’s development of plastic
and reconstructive surgery techniques during
the First and Second World Wars respectively,
and Sir Frederick Banting’s design of a
pressurized flight suit and oxygen mask for
aviators during the Second World War.
Unfortunately, many of our alumni such
as Banting and Bethune also made the ultimate
sacrifice of their lives while in service.
Our alumni have also made important
contributions to peace initiatives around
the world. Since 1984 the Canada
International Scientific Exchange Program
(CISEPO), under the direction of Arnold
We are proud
of the numerous
ways that our
medical graduates
have contributed
to making a
difference around
the world, both
in times of conflict
and times of peace.
Noyek, has contributed to peace building
in the Middle East, bringing Israeli,
Jordanian and Palestinian individuals and
institutions together for the common purpose
of health care. Also, for the past four
years, medical students have been collecting
medical textbooks to send to Afghan
medical schools via the Canadian Armed
Forces, as part of the Books with Wings
project. Many of our faculty and alumni
contribute to this important rebuilding
effort with donations of textbooks and
monetary funds.
We are proud of the numerous ways
that our medical graduates have contributed
to making a difference around the
world, both in times of conflict and times
of peace. The Faculty of Medicine is committed
to ensuring that our students and
alumni continue to make vital contributions
to the advancement of health care,
and address the crucial issues that confront
us locally, nationally, and internationally. ■
COVER STORY
“We shall not sleep”
Medical alumni help heal wounds of war
MOST OF US KNOW AT LEAST THE FIRST FEW
lines of “In Flanders Fields,” perhaps reciting it
at school every Remembrance Day. Some of us
may even know that in April of 1915, Dr. John
McCrae, devastated by a close friend and fellow
soldier’s death, and surrounded by the terrible
carnage of the Second Battle of Ypres,
penned the poem that has come to symbolize
the sacrifices of all those who fought during
the First World War (and indeed, all subsequent
wars).
McCrae, a field surgeon in the Canadian
artillery, composed “In Flanders Fields” as he
sat on the back of an ambulance beside his
dressing station, close to the growing rows of
simple white crosses planted in a field of
blood-red poppies. The dressing station was
in a hole at the foot of a bank manned at the
top by Allied soldiers; as they were shot, the
wounded and the dead would often roll down
into McCrae’s station.
What many don’t know is that Dr.
McCrae was a graduate of the University of
Toronto Faculty of Medicine, a gold medalist
in the Class of 1898. He was a poet and a
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
physician who saved the lives of numerous
soldiers during the South African Boer War
and the First World War. Dr. McCrae is part
of a distinguished U of T medical alumni
legacy forged in both times of war and the
pursuit of peace.
From the well-known pioneering contributions
of Frederick Banting and Wilfred
Bigelow to the numerous important but lesserknown
medical war efforts of U of T physicians,
we pay tribute to all alumni who have
served their country and their profession so
remarkably and in so many ways. The following
brief snapshots represent only a very few
contributors and their stories.
Bringing blood to the front
Dr. Norman Bethune’s desire to fight fascism
propelled him to travel to Spain in 1936.
While his socialist political leanings may have
made him a controversial figure, it was his
time on the battlefields of Spain and then later
in China, which inspired him to develop the
first mobile blood bank. Bethune saw how
many wounded soldiers died enroute to base
hospitals from the battlefields, often for the
want of a blood transfusion. He created
mobile medical units, made up of a wagon
with a refrigerator, sterilizer, incubator, blood
transfusion sets and stored blood, which followed
regiments to the front where the casualties
occurred.Within months, Dr. Bethune
and his team were giving up to 100 transfusions
every day. It was a radical new way of
practicing battlefield medicine that has saved
the lives of countless soldiers all over the globe.
POW experience shaped a career
Dr. Miller Fisher (Class of
1938) is 93 now, yet his
memory is as sharp as ever
when it comes to recalling
his three-and-a-half years in
a German prisoner of war
camp during the Second World War. The
1998 laureate in the Canadian Medical Hall of
Fame, inducted for his pioneering work in the
recognition of the clinical features, stroke risk
and treatment of Carotid Artery Disease,
refuses to characterize his experience in the
POW camp outside of Bremen, Germany, as
anything beyond “a bit rough at times.” As a
physician in the camp for Royal Navy prisoners
in 1941 (Dr. Fisher was a surgeon lieutenant
in the Royal Navy when his cruiser was
sunk in the South Atlantic), he had no medicines
or equipment, yet felt, on the whole, that
the health of the men
was relatively good.
“As I used to say, if
you remove men
from wheels, wine
An article from
the Sept. 18,
1945 edition of
The Hamilton
Spectator
lists Dr. Fisher’s
name among
repatriated
Canadian prisoners
of war.
and women, they remain healthy,” he quips.
What was difficult he says, was the feeling of
hopelessness that many of the prisoners experienced.
“My job as a physician was to keep
the men on as even a keel as possible,” Dr.
Fisher explains. “When a POW came to me
and said, ‘I can’t take it anymore, I’m going
through the barbed wire,’ I would shoot
back, ‘You’re the fifth prisoner to come along
today; you’ll have to get over it like the others;
we’re all in this together you know.’”
To combat the mind-numbing boredom,
Dr. Fisher turned to the classics of literature
and learned to read German. That latter skill
would, on his return to Canada, allow him
access to critical original German medical literature
about cerebrovascular disease. His
attention to new areas and specific causes of
stroke led to the discovery of aspirin as a prevention
method. “The ability to learn German
was an important dividend for my career,” he
says, modestly—and for modern medicine, we
would add.
U ofT story of love and war
Dr. James Goodwin (Class of 1955) loves a
good story. The retired alumnus who has
taught and practiced perinatology both
domestically and abroad, also loves medical
history, an interest which he is pursuing
at his alma mater. It’s not surprising then
that Dr. Goodwin has just published “Our
Gallant Doctor” Enigma and Tragedy: Surgeon
Lieutenant George Hendry and HMCS Ottawa,
1942 (Dundurn Press: 2007). The book, a
biography that is a compelling blend of love
story, tragedy and great courage set against the
torpedoing of a Second World War Canadian
Stretcher bearers
prepare to remove a
wounded soldier
from the front, 1918.
destroyer, gives an account of another U of T
alumnus, Dr. George Hendry (Class of 1935).
Dr. Hendry, second son of Dr. William
Hendry, a revered U of T alumnus and professor
of medicine at the university, was a talented
and much-loved young doctor set to marry his
adored sweetheart. But because of a romantic
indiscretion, the rest of his short life took
a very different turn, a
personal tragedy that
was nonetheless defined
by honour, courage and
dignity. Trying to flee a
disasterous marriage, Dr.
Hendry abruptly enlisted
in the navy, and in
September, 1942, his ship was torpedoed and
sunk in the mid Atlantic. Clinging to a raft,
Dr. Hendry survived, but exhausted from six
heroic nights of operating on sick and injured
men strapped down to the captain’s dining table,
he soon slipped away into the turbulent sea.
Dr. Goodwin says, “I think this is a good
story that needed to be told, that reflects all of
our hopes and frailties.” Michael Bliss, professor
emeritus at U of T, adds in the book’s foreword:
It is also a story of medicine and its values in
an age that only a shrinking few of us still
remember—the age before miracle treatments,
high technology, insurance, bureaucracy, and
shifting social values changed forever the meaning
of being a doctor.
The only pathologist in Afghanistan
Dr. John Deck (Class of 1956) recently
returned from Afghanistan where he volunteered
at CURE International Hospital in
Kabul, as the only practicing pathologist in
Afghanistan. He began sending regular
emails to his class website last October to
keep in touch with friends and colleagues.
Although he’s modest about his contribution
to helping rebuild Afghanistan, Dr. Deck,
like many U of T medical alumni, staff and
students involved in international peacebuilding
efforts, is making a real difference in
our world. These are various excerpts from
his series of fascinating emails:
Most of the other hospitals in the region are
now sending their path. specimens here and I am
really enjoying being back at work and feeling
useful. The outcome of Canadian efforts in this
country hang in the balance, but every little effort
to build a better society here seems worthwhile.
The resources here are limited but this hospital
is doing a fine job. Unusual features for me are
that patients and their families troop into the lab
with specimens or to collect reports. They are very
respectful and almost all Afghans are warm and
welcoming. Their hospitality is legend, and I am
experiencing it. . .
. . . I have an Afghan resident in training who
has been threatened because he “works with the
Americans.” So have other residents at the hospital.
The people I meet all are glad the Taliban is
gone and fear its return. Now and then, my technician
comes to me shaking, thinking that visitors
at the lab were Taliban. I don’t often think about
security. When an American doctor comes from
the American base in Kabul to speak to the residents
here, he comes with an armed convoy, part
of the routine security practiced by the military.
The hospital operates on a very limited budget
and most of the patients cannot
pay. Poverty is a major
problem. . . . Corruption in
government is rife, and
Karzai has to walk a very
fine line. This is one of the
more important features of life here and a major
hindrance to economic progress.
I have been working here with great satisfaction
because I am involved in helping in some
small way, and the ultimate outcome of the hostilities
is out of my hands. The personal rewards
have been great and I would encourage others to
consider using whatever skills they have to do
something like it.
From the incredible sacrifices of our veterans
to our Faculty’s many and varied contributions
to peace-building efforts, U of T has a great
deal to be proud of, in its past and present.
Thanks also to the following alumni who generously
shared their war experiences and peacebuilding
efforts with MAA Matters: Dr. Ernest
G. Meyer (Class of 1938); Dr. Henry Barnett
(Class of 1944); Teresa Pun (Class of 2007). ■
Thanks To Our Donors
Sharing your dream
You worked hard to fulfill your dream of becoming
a physician. You were driven to succeed no matter
what the obstacles were: long hours of study, difficult
lectures, family commitments or money worries, might
have been one or all of the challenges you faced. But you persevered
and now you’re generously sharing some of your success
with those students who dare to dream of improving the
health of under-serviced northern communities, or working in
breast cancer research, or pioneering a new surgical technique.
Your donation to the Medical Alumni Association means
that those students in financial need can pay their rising
tuition costs. It means that they can be part of the Faculty’s
International Health program, opening their eyes to global
health realities and bringing our world closer together. And
it means that excellence is recognized and rewarded, inspiring
all of us in so many ways. On behalf of each and every
student and the MAA, thank you for your 2006 donation.
Thanks To Our Donors
Our Students Thank You
Since 2001, your donations to the MAA/Ontario Medical Foundation
Ontario Medical Students Bursary Fund have helped students in financial
need from all backgrounds to offset the cost of their tuition fees.
The MAA and our students thank you for your
generosity and your recognition that no qualified student
should be denied his/her dream because of lack
of funds. We salute all of the following 2006 donors.
“
I am writing to extend my sincerest thanks and
gratitude to the Medical Alumni Association and
the Ontario Medical Foundation for supporting
me with a generous bursary. As you know, student
fees are high these days and, topped with the
ever-rising cost of living in Toronto, it is very difficult
for medical students to finish school without
a considerable amount of debt. With help from
your organization and others, the difficult task of
keeping this debt within reasonable limits (and of
repaying these limits) is much more manageable.
Irun special psychotherapy
groups for people with
chronic physical illness or
disability and for their loved
ones.When my 53-year-old
patient who had to give up her
career track position as a chartered
accountant because of
severe rheumatoid arthritis,
announced that she was no
longer depressed—even though
“DocTalk”
Luck and re-invention
A physician psychotherapist charts her career
the arthritis had worsened—I was euphoric. I
had helped to relieve her emotional suffering.
I was always interested in people, including
myself. I knew that having two Holocaust
survivors for parents had scripted my life.
I wanted to be a psychiatrist even before
I knew that one had to go to medical
school first.
Fast forward to my clerkship year. I found
myself doing my psychiatry rotation and hating
it. All the patients were heavily medicated.
It all seemed to be a non-conversation. I
ran from psychiatry, but where to?
First stroke of luck: I only knew that
medical microbiology was a distinct medical
specialty because my husband’s best
friend from medical school was a medical
microbiologist. He had job satisfaction with
reasonable hours. It was easy to get a residency
spot, my straight internship, planned
with psychiatry in mind, counted; I got my
FRCPC in record time.
Second stroke of luck: working as a medical
microbiologist was not only interesting
and fulfilling, it delivered a huge bonus. As a
hospital employee with management
responsibilities, I learned an enormous
amount about people. Little
did I know how useful this
would be.
Fast forward 16 years:
hospital budgets are shrinking;
salaried physicians are expensive.
I need a new professional life.
Third stroke of luck: it is
before changing your scope of
practice becomes a big hurdle,
so I can switch easily to private
practice as a physician psychotherapist.
I love learning new skills. When patients
share their distress about life in organizations,
I can help by understanding in ways
most physicians cannot.
Fourth stroke of luck: best of all, I get to
combine my creativity with my medical
knowledge to develop innovative programs.
I ran away, ended up far away, then ironically
landed back where my passion lies:
relieving emotional suffering. I can see my
script clearly now.
WAYS OF GIVING
A class act
Join with classmates to establish an award or memorial fund
Now admit it: didn’t you enjoy your last
class reunion? Maybe you didn’t lose
that 10 pounds before the big event,
but then chances are few of your classmates did
either. Like you, they were simply looking forward
to catching up with old friends and reflecting
on careers and life passages. Getting together
at reunions, or staying in touch through a
newsletter, this magazine, or through personal
contact, is also rewarding because it gives many
of us the feeling of belonging to something special.
Even better, many alumni want to use that
special energy to give something back to their
school and the future of their profession.
One way to do this is for a class (or classes) to
establish an award or fund to recognize or help
a current or graduating student. Classes can get
together to commemorate a classmate’s contribution,
commitment or character, or can create
an award or endowment to pay tribute to a particular
specialty or simply to help a current or
graduating student in financial need.
The desire to bring together their class to recognize
a classmate, is what inspired Dr. Barney
Giblon and the Class of 5T7 to create The 5T7
Memorial Dr. Janice Huffman Award in
Radiology. It is designated for a graduating
student who has excelled in and who will be
specializing in radiology and who has an interest
in equity issues.
“Dr. Huffman was one of 16 women graduates
in our class,” Dr. Giblon remembers. “She
entered a specialty that few women went into at
the time and we thought that a memorial award
would be a wonderful way to remember a quiet
woman who considered her class to be her family.
In fact, she was the first one to respond to
the notice of our upcoming 2007 50th-anniversary
reunion,” Dr. Giblon says. Dr. Huffman
died in August, 2006, and the class is collecting
donations for the award and formalizing conditions
for the recipient. “There are numerous
reasons for a class to create a student award,”
continues Dr. Giblon. “It isn’t a difficult thing
to do and the satisfaction of helping a student—and
the enjoyment of working together
with past classmates—is enormous.”
