Gender Issues in the Academy
• The Academy has 67 members - 10 % of them are
women, all in S&T
• Membership data is public and not broken down by sex
• 1 woman in the Directive Board
• The Academy is aware that there is low participation of
women in S&T

Strong/weak points of the Academy
regarding Gender Issues
• There is not actively promoting women and
gender issues in the Academy.
(The Academy statutes and regulations state the requirements to
be admitted as an academic , independent of gender)
• The only way to increase the number of female
members is providing opportunities for them to
accomplish the requirements:
• Science advanced degrees (Masters & PhD)
• Positions in research institutions

Barriers to women`s education and
careers in S& T
• Families can not afford to pay for the education
• There are not PhD in Science offered in Guatemala
• There are not many research institutions to work in.
Just a few jobs available.
• The Academy can help by providing a link between
Science women and Universities and research
institutes around the world.

Actions for WfS-WG
• Provide scholarships for talented young scientists to
study abroad.
• Cooperation between the academies in the region to
facilitate short training in specific techniques at
universities.
• Promote the implementation of MSc and PhD
programs in Guatemala
• Promote positions in reseaarch institutions abroad.
