Summer/Fall

Scottish Wildcat
The Scottish Wildcat is much bulkier than a domestic
cat, with thick fur and a non-tapered tail. They once
roamed the forests and grasslands of Europe, but are
now extinct in England, Wales and Scandinavia and
numbers in Scotland are critically low with less than
100 remaining.

A Note From the President
As we approach the end of summer, we thought it would be an amazing time to reintroduce legendary UK rock
band The Who to our audience. They have sold over 100 million records worldwide, and they are now gearing
up to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a bang - a possibly last but extremely massive world tour. What better
way to honor such an iconic ensemble who fabricated the greatest song of all time, “Baba O’Riley.” With that
said, please join us as we pay homage to one of the relevant bands in the history of music and UK culture.
From pop culture to fashion, 2014 seems to be the year
of the kitten. In the past year, kittens have shown their
fierce cuteness and fashion sense in the pages of Vogue,
and are the pet of choice for celebs such as Taylor Swift
evidence that kittens are more popular than ever, enter
she belted out “Wrecking Ball.”
If you can’t get enough of these adorable felines, we
Jessie
Ware
For Jessie Ware, singing is the easy part. Uncannily
beautiful vocals have been pouring out of this London
native since she was a kid. Nominated for two BRIT
Awards, Ware has been a star in her native England
where her debut album Devotion reached the Top 5. But
it wasn’t until the release of the If You’re Never Gonna
Move EP in 2013 and subsequent US tour that American
audiences got wind of the singer’s unique power. Ware’s
love affair with America seems to have only just begun. “I
feel like the crowds in the US really get what I’m trying to
do,” says Ware. “I love how they chat to me during the
songs, like ‘Hey girl, sing it!’ That makes me laugh.”
Ware started singing at school, inspired by the timeless
purity of her mother’s classic records. Frank Sinatra and
Ella Fitzgerald singing Cole Porter was an early love as
was the transporting magic of musicals. With a bit of
classical training under her belt and that innate desire
to become someone else through performance, Ware
arrived at university and promptly suffered a devastating
crisis of confidence. “I didn’t think it was ever going to be
possible,” she says, explaining why she put her dreams of
being a singer on hold. “It always broke my heart a bit. I
couldn’t even do it casually because it made me feel too
sick to only half do it.”
Convinced her career as a singer was over before
it began, she studied English Literature and pursued
journalism after graduation. “I wanted to be a football
reporter,” she recalls. “I’m interested in other people.”
Fascination with other people is not a quality you find
in many pop stars. In fact, some would consider it a
liability. But when Ware’s old friend Jack Peñate offered
her the chance to tour America as his backup singer,
she discovered that she had more of that sink-or-swim
grittiness than she initially thought. “I quit my job and
got in the van,” she recalls with a chuckle. “It was a very
wrecked van, and it wasn’t very glamorous but it felt like
the American dream. I was living the dream, just, even
driving through Montana. I was like, ‘This ….is…. amazing!
I’m a singer and I’m in America!’”
360 MAGAZINE
31

32 360 MAGAZINE

In the States, Peñate’s guitarist introduced her to renowned underground producer SBTRKT, and they
collaborated on a track, “Nervous,” which showcased Ware’s big voice and made a significant impact
on the UK club scene. A second one-off track, “Valentine,” recorded with another of the UK dance
scene’s key players, Sampha, displayed the sweeter, more delicate side of Ware’s talent. The one-two
punch of these tracks was enough to score the singer a UK record deal. The humble little girl from South
London was on her way.
Ware was getting the hang of pop stardom but the haze of insecurity that had initially plagued her
still hovered. Sure, she could work with other brilliant artists, but could she really stand center stage
and belt out a full set of her own tracks? “I needed to take a step back from being a dance vocalist,”
she explains. “As much as I love that scene, I wanted to set that apart and learn how to be a classic
songwriter.” So she retreated into the studio with a slew of collaborators and found her voice, which led
to her androgynous dame look and easeful-seeming confidence onstage.
“I wanted to combine electronic with a more classic songwriting,” she says. “I didn’t want it to feel too
‘of now,’ so that’s why I went back to beats and grooves of things I loved before, like Prince and Chaka
Khan and Grace Jones. I wanted to make downer R&B - songs that are beautiful and bittersweet, like
Sade. It was just about mixing it up in the right way.”
The glittery downbeat shimmer of Devotion represents the first moment in the songwriting process
where Ware truly felt like a singer. “I could finally express myself in the way that I wanted, with the
music I wanted.” The flirty swing of “Sweet Talk” captures the ecstatic terror of being reckless with a
new love. Ware’s intention to warm up dance music has been widely praised. That sensibility continues
with the two tracks Ware recorded specifically for the US release. “Imagine It Was Us” is “a fun dance
song,” Ware says. She modeled it specifically on the elated pop of ‘80s dance floor goddesses like
Janet Jackson. “I felt like it would be a fun one to play live at summer festivals,” she says. And, “Wildest
Moments” remix featuring A$AP Rocky is a reworking of one of Ware’s most stirring tracks. “I always
imagined this song having a rapper on it,” Ware says. “And I am so happy it’s A$AP.”
“I want to be a pop star, in the classic sense, like Annie Lennox, or Sade, or Whitney [Houston],” she says.
But behind the hoop earrings and shoulder pads are still signs of that pragmatic girl who thought she’d
spend her life writing about other people. “The whole timeless thing, it’s quite ambitious,” she muses.
“Mostly, I just want to make things I can be proud of if it all goes tits up.”
Ware recently released “Tough Love,” co-written and produced by BenZel - the first new music from her
forthcoming sophomore album.
SPOTLIGHT ON:
Dare by Johny Dar
Finale of Mercedes Benz Fashion
Week Berlin
Johny Dar received a standing ovation for an undoubtedly unforgettable show that introduced a
unique fusion of art, fashion and music to the runway, and closed Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin.
The show began fashionably late with gunshots ringing out into the darkness, followed by an arresting
performance from painted ballerinas, who initiated a space of empowered feminine expression, and
pulled the models onto the runway through the movement of their dance. The first models to walk were
dressed in nothing but Dar’s extraordinary body art, lightly veiled by long hair that flowed almost to the
ground, revealing and concealing the vibrant designs of their painted second skins beneath.
34 360 MAGAZINE

Johny Dar’s avant-garde collection included a revealing range of intricate laser cut dresses alongside
decadent couture pieces made from unexpected fusions of materials including sheer silk chiffon,
cork, tulle, metal chains, mesh and customized elastic. Dar’s intricate original artwork laser cut into
silk and cork and showing the bare naked skin beneath it was juxtaposed with voluminous pieces
that simultaneously emphasized and redesigned the shape of the body. Pret-a-porter capes added
alternative dimensions of expression and elasticated accessories provided a sporty twist to the fresh,
sexy cuts. Luxurious flowing fabrics featuring original prints in exotic colors moved majestically with the
motion of the models’ bodies as they walked, in a serenely seductive celebration of sensuality.
The makeup was no less original than the fashion, designed by Johny Dar to enhance the effect of his
collection with eyelash extensions on the eyebrows and bright dashes of lipstick. The hair styling was
individually designed for each look, and included unique concepts such as a mask of hair that was
worn with a clinging vibrant yellow dress adorned with laser cut monkey skulls. The three ‘heavenly girls’
who walked at the end of the show to the soulful sound of John Lennon’s “Imagine” were painted in the
most spectacular of Dar’s designs, with long hair draped over their bodies and shaped into leotards, in
an original mergence of hair, art, music and fashion.
360 MAGAZINE
35

This was a show that harmonized different mediums in a sensational symphony of elements masterfully
combined to create a unique and refreshing runway experience. Both music and background visuals
were produced exclusively for the show and synchronized with the various themes of the collection.
Models walked the runway backed by a mesmeric composition of Dar’s original artwork from DAR the
BOOK – his six volume series featuring images of the feminine – which was brought to life as models
appeared to walk out of the artwork projected onto the back wall of the runway.
For Johny Dar, 40 days notice to produce this runway show was not enough of a challenge. Dedicated
to sharing the opportunities in life, as well as to breaking boundaries and stretching beyond his own
limits, Dar decided to extend the opportunity and challenge of creating the show from scratch in just 40
days to a group of fashion students who worked in collaboration with him to realize the collection. The
final show was then brought together in a 24-hour production marathon, during which time Dar painted
11 models and 3 ballerinas with the help of a team of makeup artists from Kryolan, who sponsored the
production set.
36 360 MAGAZINE

Designed as a prelude to his couture collection for next season, Dar’s body art introduced a new style
of artistic fashion presented alongside an exciting new realm of expression in couture. Significantly, this
fashion was not designed to be sold but to introduce a new and original look preceding a now much
anticipated couture collection for next season. Pieces from the show are subsequently available only for
exclusive editorials and currently confidential projects that will be revealed later this year.
Dare by Johny Dar was a runway show like no other and aptly demonstrated that Johny Dar does
indeed dare to be different. This was evident not only in his unique style of art and avant-garde fashion,
but also in the strong sense of team spirit surrounding his production, which culminated in the entire
team walking the runway. A surprising and inspiring finale to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin, this
show was also a scintillating taste of what is still to come from Johny Dar - a designer who dares.
Lisa Meyer Fertal, EMBA, founder and Executive
Director of East End Disability Associates (EEDA),
has been in healthcare for over twenty five years.
Fertal became personally aware of the lack of
services for individuals with disabilities on eastern
Long Island after her son Andrew was diagnosed
as having neurological impairments and autism.
Establishing relationships with other parents who
had children with disabilities, she learned the
needs of children and families while sharing the
sorrows and joys of raising a child with disabilities.
In 1993, she founded EEDA as homage to her son,
establishing a grassroots, mission-based, non-profit
organization to provide Family Support Services
to those with developmental disabilities and their
families residing on eastern Long Island. EEDA’s
purpose was to meet the unique needs of each
individual with disabilities, pursuing a personcentered
approach that leveraged abilities.
EEDA’s innovation has served as the catalyst to
establish programs on the cutting edge of its field,
especially in Residential, Day, Crisis and Family
Support Programs. EEDA programs are communitybased
and reflective of the diversity found on
eastern Long Island. EEDA maintains strategic
partnerships with a variety of stakeholders,
including governmental funders, healthcare
providers, two-hundred-eighty employees, sixhundred
children and adults with disabilities,
their parents and family members, legislators,
contractors, vendors, community members, and
for-profit and non-profit organizations. As the
organization developed, so did the partnerships,
offering increased value and benefits to
individuals with disabilities, their families and the
community.
EEDA’s annual budget has grown to over twelve
million dollars; its success has been a direct
reflection of the extraordinary employees who
balance a family-centered culture with a fiscally
responsible business model. Fertal, a lifelong
Dr. Bryant King
Dr. Bryant King was born and raised in East
Chicago, Indiana, an old steel mill town 30
minutes south of Chicago, Illinois. He was born to
an 18-year-old mother who was yet to finish high
school and a 21-year-old father who had just been
drafted to the Vietnam War. Though unimaginable
at the time, Helen and Albert King would raise an
academically advanced, double board certified
physician who would become an exemplary role
model for three siblings to follow.
At the age of 12, having breezed through grade
school, he was advanced two years from 6th
grade to an 8th grade Gifted and Talented
Program. Although he thrived academically, at
12 years old, he was socially awkward with
14-year-old classmates. After a short time, he
returned to his more comfortable 6th grade peer
group. King went on to graduate Valedictorian
from both elementary and junior high school.
By the age of 16, King had helped his two younger
sisters and brother deal with their parents’ divorce.
Subsequently, he was displaced from his family
home for a year when his mother struggled to find
housing for four children. Later, when it was clear
that he had exhausted financial support from his
parents, he took a part time job at Burger King,
often walking home from work in cold Chicago
winters alone at midnight. Despite working parttime
and playing sports in high school, King
graduated at the top of his high school class
and earned a scholarship to the University of
Notre Dame.
After college, he moved to New Orleans, LA
and began a long pursuit of admission to medical
school. Despite his academic achievements,
King applied to and was rejected for admission
to medical school for four straight years after
college. When asked recently about being
bitter at all of those rejections, King paused and
said, “When you have 400 applicants with a
4.0-GPA but only 100 available spots, how do
you choose?”
Ultimately, he was granted admission to the Tulane
University Medical School, some 5 years after
college. After his first year of medical school and
having no financial support system, King became
homeless and slept in his car for several months.
Still, he went on to graduate from the Tulane
University Medical School with the meritorious
award for exemplary studious behavior. He then
went on to become the first Black Chief Resident
The Who
50 and going strong
Interview by Eiko Watanabe
The Who was originally formed by sheet-metal worker Roger Daltrey circa 1963. The line-up gradually
established itself with Daltrey on lead vocals, Keith Moon on drums, John Entwistle on bass and Pete
Townshend on lead guitar. Townshend, honoring his art student credentials, wrote (and still writes)
music famous for having an ‘edge,’ complemented by the wildly creative performance
techniques of each member of the band.
It is generally acknowledged among rock aficionados that
The Who in their heyday were the most exciting live band on
the planet, with their Live at Leeds album (1970) hailed as
the greatest live album of all time. The compositional skills of
Townshend have always been way beyond the conventional,
as is proven not only in classic songs like “My Generation”
and “Baba O’Riley” but also in his two great rock operas (a
form he more or less invented single-handed) Tommy and
Quadrophenia.
Today, despite the deaths of Keith Moon and John Entwistle, The
Who strongly remain a potent force on the rock music scene,
with Townshend continuing to write and seek new musical
challenges and Daltrey still the charismatic front-man he’s
always been. Their “Concert for New York City” appearance
after the tragedy of 9/11 was a classic, as have been their
annual performances at the Royal Albert Hall in aid of the
Teenage Cancer Trust. In 2006, Pete Townshend wrote The Who’s
first studio album for the new millennium, Endless Wire and the
band toured Europe and the US during 2006 and 2007.
In 2012/2013, The Who embarked on the Quadrophenia and
More Tour, performing their landmark rock opera in its entirety,
marking the 40th anniversary of the original 1973 release of
this double-album masterpiece. The critically acclaimed and
highly successful tour closed at London’s Wembley Arena
(Quadrophenia: Live in London DVD came out in June).
“The visual presentation was stunning, which is credited to Roger and
his creative team. I was in charge of the musical arrangements that
drove the visuals,” recalls Frank Simes, who’s been working as
the musical director for The Who. “We also sang four-, five-, and
six-part vocals, and these were all live without an audio track. These
vocal parts were sung on the records, but The Who had never sung all
the harmonies in their entirety on stage. It was a huge responsibility to
prepare for the tour, and, yes, I felt the pressure and stress at times, but
all in all, it was an incredibly rewarding experience.”
Here’s what a typical day of The Who on the road is like: “After a night or day’s travel by plane, train,
or bus, we would show up at sound-check in the afternoon. We would run through several songs, with
each song serving a distinct purpose: one that rocks (‘The Real Me’), one that Pete plays acoustic on
(‘I’m One’ or ‘Drowned’), one instrumental song (‘Quadrophenia’ or ‘The Rock’), one complex tune
with lots of vocal harmonies (‘I’ve Had Enough’), one for checking the harmonica level, and one or two
of the greatest hits,” explains Simes, who also worked on the music sequence for their performance
at the 2012 London Summer Olympics closing ceremony. “If there were trouble spots in a song or two
on a previous night’s performance, we would address those kinks. I would stay on top of the intonation
and phrasings of the backing vocals and the horns, keeping them tight and top-notch. We would have
dinner at catering, and then rest up for the show. Then, at the appointed hour, we would meet in the
corridor, and then proceed to the stage. Arriving on stage was always a magical moment, right there,
behind two of music’s biggest icons.”
“If you’re going to play guitar or sing to
an audience, do it with explosive power,
raw energy, and with commitment and
attitude. Work on your narrative, your storytelling.
If you intend to confess something
in a song, be utterly earnest,” Simes adds
avidly. “If you want to express political or
social discontent, do it with passion and
intelligence and poetry and pride. Finding
your voice through music and lyrics is a
way to a sense of pure freedom. These are
the qualities that represent The Who.”
Bebe Rexha is a first-generation Albanian-American from Brooklyn.
Her major break into the music industry was as the frontwoman for
Pete Wentz’s Black Cards project, where she honed her talents opening
up for acts like Travie McCoy, Panic! at the Disco and Bon Jovi. In 2012,
Wentz decided to fold the project to refocus his attention on his group
Fall Out Boy, and Rexha found herself doubting her direction. She channeled
those emotions into “Monster Under My Bed,” a dark, hypnotizing track
produced by Frequency.
“It was a breakthrough for me because I felt like I was accepting myself, my anxiety, the panic, all my
song spent fi ve weeks at #1 and sold more than 3 million copies. Fans soon discovered Rexha’s original
demo online, and the buzz around her has been building since.
Fresh off her songwriting success, Rexha released “I Can’t Stop Drinking About You,” an EDM-driven
anthem about drinking through a breakup that Billboard describes as a “beguiling solo debut.” It
received nearly half a million SoundCloud plays in less than 3 months.
A self-professed EDM addict, with infl uences ranging across the genres of Alternative and Pop, Rexha
has written with producers Zedd, Max Martin, Stargate and Fraser T Smith, and has a song on the
upcoming David Guetta album. She most recently made a Billboard appearance writing for and
singing on Cash Cash’s dance hit “Take Me Home,” which has spent over 13 weeks on the Hot 100.
Singles like “I Can’t Stop Drinking About You,” produced by The Monsters and the Strangerz, are just
one reason why in early 2014, Billboard named Rexha an artist that will defi ne the year. She’s keeping
focused on the future as she works with Warner Bros. Records on her debut album.
VINTAGE TATTOO
In 1989, Baba Austin – owner of Vintage Tattoo
Art Parlor in Los Angeles – started his journey in
New York City with tattoo artist Jonathan Shaw
when tattooing itself was still illegal in the Big
Apple. Originally, though, Austin was in the city
for graffiti, creating all the airbrush graffiti clothes
for numerous bands such as Bell Biv DeVoe, Guy,
Kid Frost and TKA as well as styling the wardrobes
for Donnie Wahlberg (New Kids on the Block) and
Vanilla Ice. One day, he sought out Shaw to get
tattooed, which ended up garnering Austin an
apprenticeship with Shaw.
In 1991, Austin left NYC to go on a world tour
with Vanilla Ice. When he got back home in
Los Angeles, he pursued a career as a tattoo
artist in Hollywood where he met another
veteran tattoo artist Mike Brown, who became
his mentor. Eventually, Austin built up a
remarkable reputation for lettering, graffiti
and American traditional tattoos.
He founded Vintage Tattoo Art Parlor in 1995, still
basing his style on the hard-edged pirate attitude
that he fully learned from Shaw. Now, he’s been
featured in numerous magazines, had his own
of the Body Art Expo tattoo convention, and has
Julian Lennon
Eiko Watanabe
“It was with the first album (1984’s Valotte) and its success and support from the major labels behind me,
and it was [like] touring the world until you dropped,” Julian Lennon recalls his first US visit. While this year
is the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ first US invasion, now it’s about time (or even overdue) for Julian
Lennon, 51, to celebrate his own creative endeavors.
His latest album Everything Changes was originally released in 2011 in the UK/Ireland, and then it was
out last year in the US/worldwide. Its acoustic version came out at the end of last year, and the box set
edition (with the instrumental version) will arrive on his mother’s birthday, September 10 th (“Releasing
the box set on her special day is my way of celebrating my mom – Cynthia”). According to Lennon,
this album means “life” to him – meaning “The fact that it’s forever changing and that in the darkest of
times, there is light at the end of the tunnel. It also may be my last album so I wanted to give everything
I can,” he says. For instance, when writing “Beautiful” on the album, Lennon took the idea that we are
all stardust coming into a formation and then going back to dust again: Life is eternal (“Whether our
conscience remains intact in any way, well, we’ll never know till we’re on the other side…or not,”
adds Lennon).
However, for Julian Lennon, being in the music industry hasn’t been easy as he openly shares on his
up-close documentary Through The Picture Window (released in December). “Maybe a few realizations
were actually brought to the forefront – things that I felt and knew, but perhaps hadn’t been put into
words before,” Lennon opens up. “They most wanted to leverage the fact that I was John’s son. I get it
to a degree, but that was their only strength and support, as for the most part, they didn’t believe I had
what it takes for a life-long career.”
“For example, Virgin Records and [the label’s founder] Richard Branson dropping me after having a
Number 1 in many countries around the world, except for the US where it was poorly promoted by Fuel
2000 Records, and Top 10 in the UK – that made no sense to me at all. There were many internal issues
with labels,” reveals Lennon.
The challenge is, Lennon says, still on the table “to a degree” – “Because without a label and the
money behind a label, it’s very tough to compete with label artists, for TV and radio spots – almost
impossible in fact,” he further elaborates. “But, I’m an artist, always will be. Maybe they’ll realize that
someday. I’m not going anywhere. I will always continue to work on projects I believe in, whether mine
or even someone else’s.”
But, the bottom line is, he’s always gotten himself back on track. “It’s like riding a wave. Sometimes,
you’ve just got to go with the flow – not force any issues, allow yourself to reflect in those moments,”
Lennon explains. “But then there are other occasions when you must push yourself through. It doesn’t
always work, but sometimes it helps.”
Outside the music scene, besides being a renowned photographer (i.e., his collections Timeless and
Alone, and his recent work as the artistic stills photographer on the Eileen Gray biopic “The Price of
Desire”), he’s also been a devoted philanthropist; he created The White Feather Foundation in 2007.
“It was set up, as a way to give back to the Mirning people, the Aboriginal tribe in the documentary I
produced, ‘whaledreamers.’ They were the ones that came to me, offering me the white feather, who
said to me, ‘You have a voice. Can you help us?’ In that moment, I realized I had two choices – to either
just keep on keeping on, as a musician/rocker, or step up to the plate and help people that couldn’t
help themselves,” describes Lennon. “Initially, we were an umbrella charity, helping those without a
voice, but we have now also moved forward with our own projects, mostly directed towards clean
water, which started with my relationship with charity: water – the clean water campaign, raising money
to supply wells and clean drinking water, where there was none.”
Lennon also declares that we can trace the root cause of social/environmental issues to darkness and
madness surrounding money and power. “They have been part of life since the beginning, but we
can try to balance it out a little more,” he asserts. “There shouldn’t be hunger, the homeless, human
trafficking and not enough clean drinking water for everyone on this planet.”
Meanwhile, here’s a little advice on what we can do about those problems: “Only you know your true
circumstance and reality, and know what you are able to do. That comes in many forms, and you have
to decide for yourself. As we all know, even as little as a smile can change someone’s day.”
With his life story of struggle and triumph, what’s really next for Julian Lennon? “Just to move forward
and be as happy as I can in doing so, and to help people along the way. That’s my goal. That’s all that
matters to me, really,” affirms Lennon. “I’m fortunate enough to have a healthy life so far. I’m fortunate
enough that I’m being able to do the things that I love to do, whether it’s music, photography, or the
foundation. For me, it’s just a constant growth in all those areas and just trying to be a better person all
around – that is the most important thing for me.”
Hair + Makeup: Lysette Castellanos
Special thanks to Alton Glass at Glassrock Studios/Glassrock Entertainment
Despite the international buzz,
Gabrielle Aplin’s journey is only
just beginning.
Growing up in a “very laid-back and chilled” household, she started writing music at
age 14. “I’m a big fan of Leonard Cohen and T. S. Eliot writing. I started listening to Joni
Mitchell and realized that I could start putting the poems I was writing to my music,”
Aplin recalls.
Three years later, she created her own label, Never Fade Records, and went on to
release 3 EPs (Acoustic, Never Fade and Home) in the UK, all of which charted on iTunes.
In 2012, Aplin’s cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love” launched to
#1 on the UK and Australia iTunes Chart, achieving certifi ed Platinum status in Australia
(and Gold in the UK). “I was really surprised and grateful for the UK TV ad (that year’s
John Lewis television commercial), which helped it there,” she says of the song’s
commercial success. “How incredible it has been recognized outside the UK on its own
merits.”
With so many accomplishments under her belt (she has already toured with the likes
of Ed Sheeran, Gotye and John Mayer), the 21-year-old singer/songwriter is more than
ready to take the US by storm with her recent premiere US release, EP English Rain. The
EP features fi ve tracks from her celebrated Gold-selling 2013 debut album of the same
name, which peaked at #2 in the UK during a chart-run that lasted almost fi ve months.
“English Rain is a collection of songs I started writing from the age of 16. It’s so nice to
fi nally see those songs out there,” says Aplin.
“I wrote ‘Please Don’t Say You Love Me’ about a friend of a friend, and as it happened,
I watched ‘(500) Days of Summer’ that night and found it quite relatable,” she adds.
“‘Panic Cord’ was about someone who was a bit too nice and creeped me out a bit.
I defi nitely didn’t lead him on.”
The EP also highlights an exclusive new track - a gorgeous rendition of Joni Mitchell’s
“A Case of You.” In addition, “The Power of Love” was featured in promos for ABC’s new hit series
Resurrection in the US.
On another note, Aplin’s music has been well received even in non-English speaking countries,
especially Japan. “It’s one of those things that I never quite understand
but am grateful that it happens,” she opens up. “I try and make the music portray
what the music is about. I believe that you don’t need lyrics to always express the
music’s meaning.”
While Aplin states that her life hasn’t changed that much since the international breakthrough
of English Rain, she admits that she’s been working non-stop now. “People think that it’s always
glamorous, but the schedule is always crammed full, and we travel so much. I try and make most
of the free time I have when I can,” affi rms Aplin. “But, I’ve been very excited about it from the fi rst
day, and I’ve enjoyed traveling and experienced the local cultures. I would never have done that
without English Rain.” For instance, Aplin’s favorite spot is the cat/goat/owl café in Japan.
“It’s something completely different and
not something you get at home in the UK,”
she describes.
Not to mention, Aplin is surely on her way
to cementing her status as a breakout artist
of 2014. “I am very grateful of where I am
in my career so far, but at the moment,
I’m working on my next album to make
something I’m really proud of,” she says.
In 2009, the south London trio’s debut album xx
– quietly made at night over the course of two
years – bled steadily into the public consciousness
to become shorthand for newly refined ideas
of teenage desire and anxiety. Articulated with
maturity beyond their years, its hallmarks were
restraint and ambiguity. In the age of the overshare,
xx was pop with its privacy settings on max.
In 2012, Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie
Smith released a new album, Coexist to an equally
rave reception.
NPR has said of The xx’s music, “[It’s] delicately
every aching second of dead air, hits like a
as “a masterpiece of stripped-down soul,” and
The xx’s debut has since gone Gold in the US,
M6 Gran Coupé
Proof that BMW still builds a true Sports Sedan
Shin Takei
BMWs have always been known to produce the “Ultimate
Driving Machine” as per their familiar ad slogan. To keep that
motto alive, the engineers at BMW have offered us cars with
great performance. These cars are not sports cars but sports
sedans, meaning that it has back seats and even four doors
for a family. Starting from a separate racing department in the
1960’s the M division went on to showcase specially-tuned BMWs
starting with the late seventies M535i. The most popular and
famous is the M3 series now known as M4. Regardless, these cars
have enhanced performance to make each model sportier
than the already sporty normal offerings.
The 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupé is an incredible sports sedan
and one that can only be appreciated by driving one. Of the
three M6 models being offered, the Gran Coupé is the best
all-around model that can satisfy most owners unless you must
have a two door Coupé or a convertible. The Gran Coupé is a
four-door fastback with a low roofl ine that blends well with the
overall shape. The M spec brings along a carbon fi ber roof that
enhances the sporty look. The familiar twin grill up front is fl anked
by two headlights and a lower center opening with side grills.
In 2001, the unsuspecting public was shocked to see the design
direction taken by Chris Bangle and his designers on the E-65 7
series sedans when the competition offered conservative looking
designs. This, however, ushered in an era of all manufacturers
chasing the fl ame-surface design as it was commonly called. But
amazingly, today when most manufacturers offer cars with busy
surfaces, the M6 Gran Coupé looks surprisingly and pleasantly
conservative. The M6 Gran Coupé is not a fl amboyant looking
car but rather a good looking well-proportioned sports sedan.
The rear end design is especially nice and clean with the tail
lights nicely integrated into the upper body and the quad
exhausts show those behind what’s up ahead.
Open the door and a lit M6 sill plate greets the eye. The ingress and egress is tight due to the low roof
position can be achieved by the 20 position M Sport seats and adjustable steering wheel but the small
rear window obstructs rear view. The interior is richly appointed in leather, Alcantara ® and carbon fiber
panels and the layout of the switches and instruments are as good as BMW has been known for. The
Executive Package adds heated and ventilated active seats with massager, rear power sunshades and
heads-up display in full color that displays among other things speed limit info.
The Driver Assistance Package Plus adds Lane Departure warning system, Active Blind Spot Detection,
Surround View parking camera system, Parking Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition,
a Lane Departure Warning System and Active Blind Spot Detection. At the center of the dashboard
and at the top of the center console is a 10.2” display that is the infotainment center. The iDrive has
progressed well but the input is still entered by the knurled rotary knob. We wish BMW will adopt a touch
screen system which is not only easier to navigate with, but faster. The optional Bang and Olufsen High
End Surround Sound System is awesome as it can be.
The M6 Gran Coupé is powered by a 4.4 Liter twin-turbo V8 with 552HP and 502 LB.FT torque from 1,500
to 5,750 rpm mated to a 7 speed dual clutch automatic transmission (yes you can still specify a manual
6-speed). 0-60mph arrives in 4.1 seconds. EPA Fuel economy is 16mpg combined, 14 mpg city and
20 mpg hwy. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. There is no “P” setting for the tranny
but rather automatically engaged when left in gear, something that took a while to get used to. The
exhaust note isn’t too loud but just the right tone and is a fine balance even in full Sport+ Mode.
Our car was installed with the $9,250 M Spec light weight carbon ceramic brake option that feature
huge 16.1” front and 15.6” rear brake rotors and 6 piston calipers that can stop the Gran Coupé in a
hurry. Nice looking 20” wheels shod with 265/35 front and 295/30 rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires fill
the wheel wells.
74 360 MAGAZINE

The steering on the M6 Gran Coupé is a hydraulic setup and is not the electronic unit found on the
normal models. Additionally, the optional Integral Active Steering which turns the rear wheels 3 degrees
in the back opposite the front wheels under 37mph and in the same direction when driving over 37mph
helps maneuver the car in tight confines or spirited cornering.
In the M6 Gran Coupé, the iDrive System allows the driver to independently adjust everything from
engine power, shift speeds, steering feel and damper firmness. The driver can also save his preferred
combination of settings in the pair of M Buttons located on the left spoke of the steering wheel. For
instance, you can program the M1 button to Sport+ Mode with maximum settings for everything and
the M2 button for Eco Pro Mode. Surprisingly, we found this to be very convenient and useful as we
toggled back and forth just for the fun of it. In addition to the afore-mentioned modes, there is the
Comfort+ Mode, and Sport Mode. But if you like spirited driving, the Sport+ Mode with Dynamic Stability
Control allows for a controlled drift around corners. To sum up what we experienced from the 2014 BMW
M6 Gran Coupé in a word: Superb. The M6 Gran Coupé is a well-balanced super sports sedan that is
luxurious and comfortable while cruising in the city, and with a flick of a switch, can turn into a sports car
when you want it to like driving in the canyons around Santa Monica Mountains.
If you want more performance, you can opt for the Competition Package for 25 more horsepower,
serious suspension tweaks and 20” wheels but we think this is an over-kill as most owners won’t take the
car on a track all the time.
The Inkhearts were formed in 2010 when the members, then young teenagers, were introduced to each
other at a music tuition initiative at The Engine Rooms, Skelmersdale. Originally a seven-piece band, it
was only when three original members left that the band found their sound, and started to write and
perform more seriously.
The Inkhearts – Ryan Ward (guitar), Lauren Shaw (vocals/guitar), Ben Warburton (bass) and Matt Wright
(drums) – successfully create music that screams enthusiasm and teenage energy. Yet, it’s underlined
by a songwriting prowess that transcends their youth. Citing influences the likes of The Vaccines, Two
Door Cinema Club and The Libertines, the band is well versed in the art of mainstream indie pop, but
their intricately layered tracks have gotten an individualism that sets their sound apart, giving them an
The latest single “Keeping Up,” described by Amazing Radio’s Jim Gellatly as a “cracking track,” was
Torre di Moravola
An Exquisite Hidden Retreat in Umbria
Shin Takei
High above Montone in Perugia on top of a hill sits Torre di Moravola, a 12 th Century medieval watch
tower restored and renovated into a sophisticated hidden retreat overlooking the Carpini Valley in
Umbria, Italy. Outbuildings, gardens, terraces and a 25-meter infinity pool are aligned on an axis with
the tower to maximize the dramatic 360-degree view over secluded valleys, unchanged for centuries,
giving the sensation of being totally removed from the modern world.
Abandoned for more than fifty years, the Tower was discovered in 2001 in ruins. There was no water or
power in the tower.
The architect and current owner Christopher Chong began as a technician under Kenzo Tange, then
under scholarship, went to work with Adolfo Natalini in Florence, before joining the Bartlett School of
Architecture in London. After graduating, he worked with Armstrong Chipperfield Associates, Sir James
Stirling on the Temasek project and Lord Norman Foster on the Hong Kong, Chek Lap Kok Airport. The
main challenge was to lighten up the dark building into a series of light filled flowing spaces suitable for
a contemporary retreat while maintaining the character and history of the structure. Chong designed
the new layout incorporating the existing axis of the ruins in relation to the mountains and added
outbuildings, gardens and solar heated infinity swimming pool. Chong and his wife Seonaid Mackenzie
(also a designer) did a lot of the actual construction themselves with the help of local residents who
were eager to resurrect the tower. The painstaking amount of love that went into the labor shows
throughout and is a remarkable architectural masterpiece.
80 360 MAGAZINE

The main challenge was to maintain the original character and history of the structure while attempting
to transform a deep and dark rambling building into a series of light filled, flowing spaces suitable
for a contemporary retreat. Natural light was brought into the heart of the building through top lit
passages. To bring in the necessary utilities such as power and water - just to start construction - was a
challenge. They even hired the services of the local witch “la Strega” who was a beautiful 16-year-old
girl with the gift of divining water. She led them to the position to drill at the location where two veins of
water crossed in the rocks below. Water was found at a depth of 90m. The heating system design was
optimized for use with solar panels. Their energy is used to provide hot water for the under floor heating
system. Provision has also been made for photovoltaic panels in the future.
Torre di Moravola opened in April 2008. There are seven suites whereby five are designed as “tower
suites” arranged in an open plan design over two levels. On the ground level, there are sunken stone
baths, showers and toilets, and direct private access to the exterior terraces. The upper level affords
complete privacy and breathtaking views over the surrounding valleys. The Main Tower Suite is a large
dramatic space reached by a private glass staircase at the highest point of the tower. The thickness
of the ancient stone walls and the passive cooling generated by the stack effect in the tower’s two
atria keep the interiors cool. Moravola is high on a mountainside so when the valley below sizzles in the
summer heat, there is always a refreshing cool breeze. The stone floors are heated by under-floor solar
generated energy in the cooler months. From outside to inside, the emphasis is on the natural world
reflected in the water, stone, wood, and choice of linens and fabrics.
There are many activities available to guests who want to explore the environs. Moravola is located in a
nature reserve renowned for its variety of wildlife. Exotic Hoopoe birds, Bee-eaters and Honey buzzards
are often seen, and hares, deer and wild boars roam in the forests. Trekking paths lead around the
surrounding hills and valleys past neighboring watch towers, or a 2-hour walk through woods towards
the village of Montone where you can have lunch or dinner and be driven back. They can arrange wild
asparagus hunts in the spring, and mushroom, porcini and truffle foraging with experienced locals. The
olive harvesting begins in October when guests are invited to experience the cold pressing for the bright
green oil.
82 360 MAGAZINE

Guests can also participate in harvesting red grapes and see how the locals press their own where later
in the year, they salt and hang their prosciutto and salamis. There are cycling trails and bicycles can be
rented, or horse riding can be enjoyed. The major cities of Perugia and Arezzo are nearby as are the
many medieval hill towns and villages of Gubbio, Assisi, Anghiari, Sansepolcro and Montefalco. This is
the land of Piero della Francesca and Perugino, Opera Orvieto, Umbria Jazz, the Montone Film Festival
and numerous local costumed and seasonal fiestas. And, don’t forget you’re in Italy, you can find
unusual trattorias and restaurants to combine with the local fiestas.
If you arrive by helicopter, there is a landing area at the base of the tower. For the adventurous, you
can follow a trail of fortified towers from a microlite flight over feudal valleys.
While at Moravola, have a body wrap of Umbrian Clay then a heavenly herbal massage. Go shopping
for hand-woven linen from Tela Umbra and Busatti in Città di Castello, and hand painted ceramics from
Deruta. Go visit Lungarotti Vineyards for their rich Sagrantino wines of Montefalco.
The resident chef prepares the finest Cucina Italia from local sourced organic farms and gardens, and
is a treat in itself. It’s as if you are staying at a bed-and-breakfast. You can take your extended family or
close friends for a very private getaway.
long-term global partnership with Richard Branson’s pioneering commercial
vehicle, a vision of Land Rover’s future family of Discovery vehicles.
Demonstrating their shared vision of pioneering spirit,
the ground-breaking partnership was announced
against the backdrop of Virgin Galactic’s
SpaceShipTwo, the world’s first commercial
Rover’s new Discovery Vision Concept vehicle.
The announcement illustrates the commitment that
both brands share to iconic design and engineering
excellence, and a desire to push the boundaries of
travel for the next generation.
The partnership will see Land Rover vehicles become
part of daily life for the Virgin Galactic team and for
all ‘Future Astronauts.’ The space experience will now
begin with Land Rover as they arrive in New Mexico
for training, and continue to the moment they drive
from the space terminal building to the waiting
spaceship. Land Rover will base a fleet of vehicles at
the Virgin Galactic test center in the Mojave Desert,
Calif., and at its astounding operational New Mexico
base, Spaceport America.
full-size replica of SpaceShipTwo VSS Enterprise to
New York, where it joined the remarkable British
Airways Concorde and its namesake Space Shuttle
Enterprise upon the Intrepid. Like the Space Shuttle,
SpaceShipTwo is the first of a revolutionary fleet of
reusable human spacecrafts. Having the
vehicles in one place for the first time
provided a powerful symbol of human
ingenuity and the adventurous spirit of
exploration and discovery.Revealed alongside
SpaceShipTwo was Land Rover’s Discovery
Vision Concept, a vision of Land Rover’s future
family of Discovery vehicles. The concept car
previews dynamic new design language and an
array of world first technologies. Building on Land
Rover’s renowned all-terrain capability, the
Discovery Vision Concept represents
the ultimate SUV of the future.
The vehicle uses augmented reality
technology to display a ‘see-through’
view of the terrain ahead, making the front
of the car ‘virtually’ invisible from inside the
cabin. Gesture Control allows you to open
the doors, operate the indicators or turn
on the headlamps simply by moving your
hand, while Laser Referencing projects
visible markings, symbols and imagery
onto the ground to aid low speed or
tricky maneuvers.
More than 200 VIP guests witnessed the
game-changing concept vehicle and
spaceship, which were revealed against
a stunning Manhattan background
and an awe-inspiring projection
mapping sequence.
Her fi rst single off the new EP, “Kiss It,”
an Edward Scissorhands theme (her
new Calvin Klein lipstick shade is named
“I have so much fun, it could be the
On another note, DEV shows a possible
It was on the morning of 1 September 1937 that Campbell established his legend,
by a Rolls-Royce R- Engine. The following day, he went one better, piloting his craft
Buon Giorno! You wake up to the aroma of hot coffee and open the window
Italian pastry with fruits and cheese. The rustling of the vines in the mild wind
beckons you for a walk. As you walk down the path and breathe the fresh
morning air, you feel like you’re in heaven. But not yet because you have an
appointment at the BellaUve Vinotherapy Spa where you will be treated to a
Smack dab in the center of Umbria along Autostrada A1 in Perugia is Giorgio Lungarotti Vineyards.
A mere 180km (110 miles) or so north of Rome, Umbria itself is located in the center of Italy. Easily
accessible by driving through beautiful countryside, the town of Assisi would be an excellent place
to stay over while visiting the region. It was in the early 1960s that the late Giorgio Lungarotti started
growing vines and harvesting grapes in Torgiano for what is now the oldest vineyard in the Umbria
region. From this humble beginning, Lungarotti is now headed by Maria Grazia Lungarotti and her two
daughters Chiara Lungarotti and Teresa Severini. The tradition and history of the vineyard and its roots
deeply imbedded in the region are carried forward today with much love and passion. These three
ladies lead more than 120 employees who work and produce over 2.1 million barrels of wine per year
but because of their deep love and dedication, nothing is lost in the wonderful products they produce.
The Lungarotti group consists of wineries, museums, olive oil production, grappa and balsamico
production, resort hotel with spa, restaurants and retreats.
Maria Grazia Lungarotti heads the Lungarotti Foundation. With her background in literature and art
history, it was natural for her to start the Wine Museum in the 1970’s which showcases the culture and
history of wine making in the Mediterranean area together with objects and fine art pieces. And most
recently, she opened the Olive and Oil Museum with similar content starting from the use of olive oil to
fuel lanterns. This all leads to the five-star resort Le Tre Vaselle and the BellaUve Vinotherapy Spa where
visitors are pampered in luxury and comfort beyond expectation. The BellaUve Spa was the first to
feature therapy incorporating grapes. Additionally, visitors can dine at Le Melograne restaurant and
take courses in cooking as well. They can stay at private cottages amongst the vineyard and olive
orchard called Agriturismo Poggio alle Vigne where guests can relax and rejuvenate themselves.
There are 16 varietals of reds and 5 whites, one vino spumante, two Grappa, Extra Virgin Olive Oil
and two balsamico produced by Lungarotti vineyards. Their Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio is the
original wine that Giorgio Lungarotti started with. Rubesco means “blush.” It is a blend of Sangiovese
and Canaiolo grapes, and tasting notes suggest cherries, vanilla, crushed rock, some hints of oak,
earth, herbs and floral. Additionally, they produce Rosso di Montefalco, Sagrantino, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Grechetto, and Chardonnay, just to name a few. Both Chiara Lungarotti and
Teresa Severini are experts in wine making, and have preserved the traditional and modern methods
of viticulture. What is incredible is their concern and involvement to preserve nature which led them
to incorporating bio-mass by recycling and using dead vines to produce heat and hot water for the
facilities. At the Montefalco vineyard, organic farming has been incorporated and certified. There’s a
lot to visit here and enjoy the hospitality, and feel the amount of love and passion that went into the 250
hectares of land. Buon Appetito!
Mangless
The Traveling Chef
Having searched several years for the right spot, Mangless upped the ante by transforming a centuryold
Broadway building into a chic dining studio that pairs big-city flair with big-time food for corporate
meetings, holiday parties, rehearsal dinners, wine tastings, cooking classes and other private gatherings.
“It’s for anyone who would want to rent out a restaurant, except here - the place is already yours,” said
Mangless, a Green Bay native and graduate of Johnson & Wales’ culinary arts program in Denver. If it
seems like Mangless’ dining experiment is shrouded in mystery, that’s exactly how he wants it. You won’t
find an elaborate sign out front. Instead, foodies - who want to find him - will find him. And when they
do, they’ll have an abundance of options to explore. “All of our menus are custom to each event. We
can really create any kind of food you need, whether it’s just hors d’oeuvres, a simple brunch, or a multicourse
tasting dinner,” said Mangless, who cut his teeth at many highly touted restaurants, including
Solera in Denver, Norman’s at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando, and Graham Elliot in Chicago. “We can do as
much or as little as you want us to do. You want us to show up with a cheese plate and wine, that’s fine.
You want flowers, linens, a DJ, tents, entertainment, sleigh rides, you name it, we can throw that kind of
party, too.”
Three Three Five is an upscale private dining studio by The Traveling Chef, located downtown Green
Bay in the Historic Broadway District. Strong architectural lines dominate the private dining studio, which
is airy and awash in earthy colors of The Historic Wauters Building. Inside, the spacious interior features
a large concrete counter paralleling the open kitchen. The ceiling and walls are wrapped in antique
pressed tin & exposed brick. Along the front of the space, 10-foot glass windows look out to the historic
Broadway street. At the center of the studio is the open kitchen offering full view to the culinary action.
The interior is spacious enough for private events hosting 200+ guests.
Q&A with
Cammie
Robinson
1. What was the process in you choosing the song
into the competition?
I decided “Over The Edge” was the best option as
it is a very adaptable track and can be interpreted
in many moods. When writing this song, I was writing
with passion and for a large audience, I thought it
suited the culture of the magazine perfectly.
2. Who is your favorite artist and how did he/she
inspire you?
I would have to say Ellie Goulding or Bastille, all
of these artists are extremely committed and
passionate about their music, and that is something
I dissected and decided to adapt to my own style.
They don’t just write music, they perform, they have
defined themselves.
6. Are there any non-singing activities that feed your
musical craft?
I play guitar, bass, drums, piano and many other
instruments to a good standard, I record all of
my own music as well as producing it. I have
recorded and produced all of my 20-track album
The Vaccine.
I would say working with sound is a big thing for me, I
like to be so much more than a vocalist, because it’s
impressive to be flexible and there’s more chance
of someone else seeing you as the competition, as
that’s what the industry is.
7. How does it feel to be chosen for this
artist feature?
It feels fantastic, 360 Magazine has offered me a lot
of great opportunities and hopefully this is just the
start of our journey together - watch this space!
3. Can you share the inspiration and perspiration
behind your music?
The inspiration of my music is my day-to-day life, I
feel like I need to write music in order to breathe, it’s
something that runs through my veins and I have to
get it out there. The perspiration is the reaction I get,
the current attention I’m getting from magazines
and BBC is truly humbling as well as being asked
to play certain festivals. I love to connect with the
audience and be as energetic and exciting as
possible, so they have a great time and most of all
remember it.
4. What is the secret to a great song?
Passion. Any song without passion is not a great
track, sure you can throw a few chords together
but it takes real persistence and drive to make
something beautiful.
Believing in your ability is the biggest secret.
5. As a singer/songwriter what is your process for
coming up with your songs?
I generally wake up at 2am and have something
floating around in my head that I simply have to
get down on paper, whether it’s a melody, a drum
pattern or a lyric. From there, I will develop the
structure using rough vocal recordings, deleting and
re-recording as I go alone, the structure changes
but the game is always the same.
Julie
Beaudoin
a’Bravo Bistro
Julie Beaudoin, founder and owner of a’Bravo Bistro
and Wine Bar in Green Bay, Wisconsin, has been
working in the restaurant industry for 30+ years. She
is self-taught and credits much of her success to
watching her grandmother and mom in the kitchen
when she was just a little girl. They would feed the
entire family with their dishes, and Julie knew that
she wanted to continue in their footsteps—but she
knew that she wanted to share her love for food with
not only her family but with her community as well!
Julie grew up with a strong entrepreneurial spark.
She often times opened businesses out of her
parent’s home during her childhood. One of the
most successful businesses was a carnival. She
organized games and sold candy and hotdogs
through the windows of her parents’ home. Julie
worked hard opening and operating her childhood
businesses, and as soon as she could, she submersed
herself into the food industry and learned from
many influential restaurateurs in the area. Julie’s
drive and determination grew as she drew closer
and closer to tackling her dream of opening her
very own restaurant.
This dream grew and manifested and soon
became a reality in 1999 when she and her sister,
Brenda Beaudoin, opened a’Bravo together.
a’Bravo began as a 9 table bistro, on Main Street in
Green Bay, that focused on high-end catering.
Through endless hours, laughter and tears, a’Bravo
grew into the restaurant that it is today. Julie moved
a’Bravo to its current location in Bellevue and began
a partnership with Mary Faye and David Demarco to
expand the 9 table bistro into a 40 table wine bar
and full service restaurant that is open 7 days
a week.
a’Bravo’s food has touched the mouths and hearts
of many. This is due to the immense pride Julie puts
into creating a space that reminds us of a time when
we were taken care of and when hospitality came
first. She encourages her staff to go the extra mile
to ensure that each diner leaves with a smile, a full
tummy, and a full and happy heart.
Two Men and Their Love
of Beer
Tim Webb is the world’s leading writer on the Belgian beers and a fi ercely independent chronicler of the
global revival in quality beers that has been gathering speed these past four decades.
Since 1992, he has written seven editions of Good Beer Guide Belgium (CAMRA Books: 7 th edition March
2014). He is the lead author of LambicLand (Cogan & Mater: 2nd edition 2011) and 100 Belgian Beers to
Try Before You Die! (CAMRA Books), and editor of the Around Town in 80 Beers series of books that has to
the Netherlands (Homewood Press: May 2014) by Tim Skelton.
In 2012, with Canadian beer writer Stephen Beaumont, he penned the fi rst editionof The World Atlas of
Beer, which has gone on to appear in eight languages and ten editions internationally and spawned
the Pocket Beer Book, which is now in its second edition.
He currently divides his time between Bristol and Cambridge (UK), from where his book webshop
booksaboutbeer.com operates. He estimates that he has drunk quality beer in over 60 different
countries; this is why he recommends traveling by bicycle.
Once described as“beerdom’s Brillat-Savarin,” Stephen Beaumont is one of the world’s most
authoritative voices on beer, having spent nearly 25 years covering the subject in articles, columns
and books.
As co-author of both The World Atlas of Beer (2012), published in ten international editions, and The
Pocket Beer Guide (2013), Beaumont has amassed an unparalleled understanding of what’s going on in
the fast-paced and expanding world of beer today. If there is good lager or ale to be had, whether in
San Francisco or Singapore, Montreal or Milan, he knows about it, and has most likely sampled it.
When he is not writing about or tasting beer, Beaumont travels the world talking about it, at a beer
dinner in Dallas, a festival in São Paulo or a competition in Brussels. He has worked with a large
number of corporations, including Starwood Hotels and Resorts, the Walt Disney Company, Scenic Tours
and Crystal Cruises, among many others, and appears regularly at conferences such as VIBE and
Magazine “Raising the Bar” award for his “noteworthy and sustained contribution to the world of
beverage alcohol.”
In addition to The World Atlas of Beer and The Pocket Beer Book, Beaumont has authored fi ve books
on his own, co-authored another and contributed to nine more. These titles include: two editions of The
Great Canadian Beer Guide; The beerbistro Cookbook; the immense 1001 Beers You Must Taste Before
You Die; the literary tribute to legendary drinks writer Michael Jackson, Beer Hunter, Whisky Chaser; and
the soon-to-be-released Handbook of Porters & Stouts.
Beaumont also authors regular columns for publications as diverse as the spirits quarterly Whisky
Advocate and the U.S. hospitality industry standard Nation’s Restaurant News, the original specialty
“brewspaper” Celebrator and the foodie favorite City Bites. Additionally, he serves on the editorial
ON THE RUN TOUR:
BEYONCÉ
AND JAY Z
Eiko Watanabe
118 360 MAGAZINE

Beyoncé and Jay Z, the music industry’s most
infl uential power couple, named their coheadlining
tour “On The Run,” and the entire
show went along with the action/drama fi lmthemed
clip “RUN” depicting Beyoncé and
Jay Z as Bonnie [Parker] and Clyde [Barrow]
(the concert kicked off with “‘03 Bonnie &
Clyde”). However, the show itself opened with
a disclaimer displayed on the stage’s gigantic
main screen: “THIS IS NOT REAL LIFE.”
Toward the grand fi nale, though, we weren’t
seeing the fi ctional story anymore; there were
the Carters’ real home videos on the screen
featuring their beach vacations, wedding
and 2-year-old daughter Blue Ivy. They
performed “Part II (On the Run),” “Young
Forever,” “Halo” and “Lift Off” together
wrapping up the show, and the screen
suddenly said, “THIS IS REAL LIFE.”
After the movie-themed 2-hour show with
a 43-song set list, the whole “On The Run”
experience came full circle with a realization:
Real life and fulfi llment can be found only by
living in the moment, nowhere else, because
life is not fi ctional. Therefore, as opposed to
the imaginary message “Die in love and live
forever” on the “RUN” fi lm, why not living in
love right where we are?
Angel
Haze
Rapper, songwriter, and lyricist Angel Haze
unleashed the Voice and Reservation EPs in 2012,
and buzz reached overwhelming heights. Around
the same time, she dropped the visceral slasher
fl ick-inspired video for “New York.”
Then, her Classick mixtape proved both harrowing
and hypnotic. Spearheaded by the confessional
tale of sexual abuse, “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” her
honesty resonated with countless listeners moved
by the track.
Closing out 2013, she launched her #30GOLD
campaign, uploading an off-the-cuff freestyle
daily over some of the hottest current beats. The
onslaught announced the birth of rap’s most prolifi c
songstress. Everything still only led up to the release
of her 2013 full-length debut album, Dirty Gold.
