years ago Jim Kissick and
Pete Browne changed the
course of their lives and the
face of our community when they formed
Kissick Construction Company. Founded on
a firm foundation of collaboration, quality,
reliability and trust, Kssick Construction
Company has grown to become a heavy civil
contractor with more than 250 employees –
many of whom have been with the company
from the start.
In this celebratory anniversary book, we
explore the relationships Kissick has
formed and cherished over these 20 years
while maintaining top quality standards
in the construction business. Without a
doubt, you’ll see why Kissick considers
relationships its strongest foundation.
Relationships
foundation.
BUILT ON FIRM GROUND
Twenty years ago, Jim and Pete had an eventful
talk that ended up changing the course of their
lives and the face of our community. It happened
one evening when Jim and Pete started kicking
around the idea of going out on their own. While
the family had been a part of Kansas City’s
construction industry since the 1890’s, Jim
and Pete were just starting to make a name for
themselves in the business. While things were
going well, both men believed they could do
more if they joined forces and founded their own
company. Even though in many ways they’d be
starting from scratch, they believed that if they
could hire and retain talented people, focus on
providing innovative solutions to the market and
treat clients, partners and employees with fairness
and respect every single day, they had a good
chance of making a go of it.

Today, Kissick Constructors Company has grown
to become a heavy civil contractor with more than
250 employees – many of whom have been with
the company from the start. As a self-performing
contractor, Kissick now routinely handles large,
multi-disciplined projects and has built a
strong reputation for tackling even the trickiest
engineering challenges and for providing innovative
solutions in critical construction environments.
And it all stems from a single conversation, two
entrepreneurial spirits, and a commitment to
placing a high value on lasting relationships built
on a firm foundation of collaboration, quality,
reliability and trust.

Kissick Construction believes in being an active, civic
partner in the communities in which we live, work and
play. Giving back is a corporate priority for us. Deeply
rooted in Kansas City, we are passionate about supporting
and inspiring generations to come. This is why we choose
to invest both our time and our money in organizations
and charities that work to provide opportunities and
growth for our region. Our involvement in supporting
local organizations is as hands-on and important to us
as our construction projects. Our community is an
investment we build on every day. And we wouldn’t
have it any other way.

OUR
COMMUNITY
IS AN
INVESTMENT
WE BUILD ON
EVERY DAY
It’s no coincidence that our company initials are K.C.
Kissick Construction has helped support more local
schools, youth athletic teams, youth activities, charity
walks and bike rides than we can count. And we can
honestly say that for every opportunity in which we have
invested, we have received much more in return. No
matter the size of the event, we believe it’s our job to
help make Kansas City one of the best places in America
to live, work and play. This isn’t just our home. It’s also
the place our clients, partners and employees call home.
A great Kansas City helps recruit and retain the best
talent in the region. And so, even though we do it
because we think it’s the right thing, being a good
civic partner just makes good business sense.

PEOPLE
I’m going to
Kissick’s. Bill Bundschuh of
PreTech quoting Charlie Corrigan, one of
the most likeable guys in the business.
Charlie said this
no matter where
he was going, he
said this so much
that some people
at PreTech thought
it must be a bar.
THE PEOPLE
WHO BUILT
OUR
REPUTATION
A company is only as strong as the people who choose
to work for it. Maybe that’s why Kissick Construction has
built a reputation of quality, reliability and trust. We’re
fortunate to have a strong team that values hard work,
honesty and the hands-on approach of our founders.
This attitude is carried through from the good people
who estimate a project, to the project engineers and
superintendents to the foreman on the job providing
superior craftsmanship.
Our core team members have been at our company for
many years, some approaching two decades. And our
clients prosper because of it. The longevity of our team
provides continuity our clients can count on now and in
the future. So, when you’re doing business with Kissick
Construction, you’re not just doing business with Jim and
Pete. You’re doing business with team of professionals
that have the same core values as the guys that started
the firm.
It’s not a
company.
It’s a family.
LOYALTY
IS NOT A
ONE-WAY
RELATIONSHIP
The skilled professionals that we employ have our reputation,
and our clients’ success, in their hands each and
every day. Fortunately, the best in the business call Kissick
Construction home. Most of our professional team has
worked together for years. They know the names of their
co-worker’s kids and spouses. They’re pretty much family –
in some cases, literally. You see, we now have fathers who
are working side-by-side with their sons transferring their
skills and knowledge to another generation of our extended
Kissick family. You can’t buy this kind of loyalty. You earn it
by creating a safe, rewarding environment and valuing each
and every person and trade who calls your company home.
What has always
been impressive
to me is the
empowerment
Kissick gives the
Field Leaders to
make hard
decisions and
solve problems.
A NOTE FROM JIM KISSICK
It has been twenty fantastic years since Pete employ and retain incredible craftsmen who
accept the idea that we cannot perform most
Browne and I reopened Kissick Construction.
My grandfather and father laid a great foundation for
me in this industry for which I will be forever grateful.
As Kissick Construction has evolved over these 20
years, we have been very fortunate to be able to
share the same levels of dedication, loyalty and
commitment that Pete and I believe in.
The people at Kissick believe in the spirit
and attitude of finding ways to accomplish very
special achievements all while refusing to
any task.
Our success goes beyond the doors at Kissick.
Since our inception, our suppliers, vendors and
subcontractors have supported us in every conceivable
way. Whether it has been going out of their way
to help us meet our schedules and goals or working
alongside of us to accomplish difficult tasks, our
teammates have always been there with us.
As our history continues, we have second and
third generation families involved, including our
craftsmen as well as our managers. We are
extremely proud to have employed people from all
over the Midwest and to watch their families grow
and prosper as Kissick Construction grows.
We look forward to the next 20 years and many
years beyond that. Our sincere thanks to everyone
who has been part of these wonderful achievements.
The mutual
support between
our companies
is admirable.
for your 20
years of success.
TRADITION
OF INTEGRITY
& EXPERTISE
Kissick self-performs all of our work. That means we don’t
farm out any part of the critical projects that we are awarded.
While that gives us a lot of control and flexibility, it also
means that the buck absolutely stops with us. In truth, we
wouldn’t have it any other way. Whenever a challenge comes
our way, we see it as an opportunity to develop new solutions
that save our clients time and money. This is achieved by
pairing advanced technology with the expertise of our team
members. This is how we take risk and manage it for our
clients. This is why Kissick has a reputation for solving
complex and challenging construction environments.
We are privileged
have them as
A NOTE FROM PETE BROWNE
I continue to be impressed and humbled by the made all the difference, and I could not be more Over the past 20 years we have built a strong
level of talent of the individuals who have joined
the firm over the years. It has been a true pleasure
to acknowledge everyone’s individual professional
successes and celebrate the growth of the firm
as a result. These dedicated team members have
thankful for those who have worked collaboratively
and contributed. As we welcome second and third
generation folks to the company, we have the
opportunity to continue to grow a quality team to
serve the construction industry.
expertise in the civil and industrial marketplace,
providing a wide scope of construction services. From
challenging site conditions to aggressive construction
schedules, we have an impressive technical expertise
and team experience to draw from.
But more than our strong technical skill set,
I’m very proud of the project approach we have
developed. Our team shows up with a pad of
paper and is ready to listen and take notes.
From municipal water and wastewater systems to
industrial manufacturing and power generation, we
begin each project with a thorough understanding
of the client’s facility operations and objectives.
Our “guests in their house” attitude and genuine
enthusiasm to complete our work with minimal
impact to operations has earned us the trust and
repeat business of our clients.
Of course it all starts with the opportunity to be
of service, and I am proud of our team attitude and
that we never lead with “no”. Instead, we tell our
clients that not only can we, we want to - and that
has made all the difference.
On big, complex
projects, we need
to know that the
work is going to
get done on time,
safely, and with
quality. Kissick has
always delivered.
SAFETY AND
QUALITY
Exceptional client service constitutes a core value for all
of us at Kissick Construction. Long-term relationships are
always founded on trust, integrity and accountability. It’s
one of the reasons our top clients return to work with us
time and again. It comes down to our core principles:
• We clearly plan our projects.
• We communicate openly and effectively.
• We share our knowledge and expertise.
• We partner with quality-conscious companies.
• We manage time and meet budgets.
• We love what we do (and it shows).
