Help on the Homefront
A moving tribute to the Australian Red
Cross, which was established just nine
days after the First World War began in
August 1914, the second issue of the Perth
Mint’s Australian Posters of WWI Series
has been unveiled!
Whether to raise funds, perform quasi-nursing
duties, create comfort packages or work in
the Red Cross’ Wounded & Missing Enquiry
Bureau, female volunteers played a key role
on the homefront in the First World War.
Beseeching Australia’s women to rally round
the boys at the front, posters were crucial in
recruitment drives. One of these was a Red
Cross ‘Help’ poster honoured by this poignant
Australian legal tender coin.
Bearing a superb full-colour recreation of
David Souter’s famous poster which remained
in print until 1918, this eye-catching 99.9%
For hundreds of years, the Spanish dollar was
widely used by many countries, including
Australia, as international currency because
of its uniformity in standard and milling
characteristics. An ingenious attempt to keep
currency in the colony, the centre from Spanish
dollars were punched out to create two coins.
The project to convert the 40,000 Spanish
coins took over a year to complete. Most of the
coins were melted down when legal tender
status was withdrawn in 1829. Less than 300
Holey Dollars exist today, with most in private
collections.
First Prefix, Consec Pairs
A highly sought after type under any circumstances, as Australia’s first
commemorative $5 note, we can now offer the 2001 Federation $5 bearing
the AA01 First Prefix – and in Uncirculated Consecutive Pairs!
A one-year-only type, the 2001 $5 Macfarlane/Evans Federation note was issued
to mark the centenary of Australian nationhood, and is rightly considered to be a
crucial element of every Australian banknote collection. As with every Australian
commemorative, this note was hoarded out of circulation at speed, and, nearly
15 years after issue, it is rarely seen in change. You would never find this key
type in Uncirculated quality. Of all Federation $5 issues, the AA01 First Prefix is
unquestionably scarce in top grade today.
Following our acquisition of a complete Reserve Bank of Australia bundle of the
2001 $5 Federation AA01 First Prefix, however, we not only have the chance to
offer this key type in Uncirculated quality – we can also offer it in seldom seen
THE 1930 IN PROOF
NEW
RELEASE
Sure to be one of the most popular releases of the year, Downies
is proud to unveil the 2015 $1 1930 Penny Proof. A surprisingly
affordable tribute to the nation’s highest profile rarity, this new
legal tender issue offers you the chance to celebrate Australia’s
King of Coins at an Official Issue Price of just $24.95!
Struck in copper, just like the original, this crown-sized Niue legal
tender release forms an outstanding tribute to ‘the coin not meant
to be struck’. Australia’s most illustrious rare coin, the 1930 Penny in VF
catalogues at $50,000 – with the 1930 Penny Proof cataloguing at
$1.5m! Not everyone can own an original, but at just $24.95,
this superb new tribute is within the reach of all.
Spanning 40mm in diameter, and presented within an
illustrated pack, the 2015 $1 1930 Penny Proof is also
remarkably exclusive. Surprisingly, given the low price,
the mintage has been set at a mere 10,000!
The original in rare VF
Australia’s highest profile rarity, hotly pursued in any condition,
the 1930 Penny is never more desirable than when found in the
upper echelons of quality – as here. An exceptional opportunity
for one of our clients, we have this iconic coin in excessively
rare Very Fine!
The very nature of the creation of the 1930 Penny means that this
coin is seldom seen in this grade. Due to the Great Depression, the
Melbourne Mint was not required to strike many coins from 1929 to
1933, and records suggest no pennies were struck in 1930. It is now
accepted that perhaps 3,000 were struck to test 1930-dated dies.
Likely to have been released into circulation with the 1931 Penny
issue, it is logical that the 1930 Penny is almost inevitably found only
in well-worn condition. The coin before you is one of few exceptions
to this rule.
With only 1,500 coins in existence, and this example among the
top few per cent in terms of quality, this rare opportunity should be
grasped with both hands.
Gold Rush Glory – Aus
BECOME ONE OF ‘THE 200’
Australia’s first gold coin, forming a unique, powerful link to the 19th century Australian Gold Rush, the 1852 Adelaide
Gold £1 is one of Australia’s most desirable coins. An incredible opportunity to become one of just 200 people who can
own this exceptional rarity, we have TWO 1852 Adelaide £1 coins in stock!
A priceless piece of Australian history, the 1852 Adelaide
£1 was struck by South Australian authorities
in response to a severe coin shortage in
the colony caused by the Gold Rush.
Struck from November 1852
until February 1853, the 23mm, 8.81g, 22-carat Adelaide £1 at
one point contained gold worth nearly two shillings above face
value, and a vast majority of the mintage of 24,000 was melted
down for the intrinsic value as a result. One of the nation’s
highest profile rarities, it is thought that approximately 200
examples of Australia’s first gold coin exist today.
If you have dreamed of one day owning this key Gold Rush
rarity, now is your chance. We have one example of the
1852 Adelaide Pound in Very Fine, and a second example in
magnificent near Unc quality.
AMONG AUSTRALIA’S GREATEST RARITIES
Australia’s first sovereigns, struck at the nation’s first official Mint, the acquisition of a Type I Sydney
Mint Sovereign in premium grade represents a mouthwatering opportunity to dine at the head table
of Australian numismatics.
The first two dates of one of the nation’s most revered types,
bearing the famous ‘wreath’ reverse motif, it is a privilege to be
able to present this numismatic icon in better than usually seen
quality. Just 502,000 examples of the Sydney Mint Sovereign
Type I were struck in 1855, with a mere 981,000 struck in
1856. With a vast majority of coins lost or destroyed for the gold
in the nearly 160 years since struck, both the 1855 and 1856
Sydney Mint Sovereigns are extremely rare – in any condition.
An original, important artefact of the Australian Gold Rush, we
have only two examples of the Sydney Mint Sovereign Type I
available. A glorious opportunity for the serious collector
or eagle-eyed investor, the 1856 is graded good Very
Fine, with the 1855 slabbed and graded by
PCGS at AU50 – the equivalent of about
ALL NEW IN NIOBIUM
A spellbinding addition to the Austrian Mint’s
universally admired Niobium/Silver Series, this
exotic new bimetallic legal tender issue
celebrates Cosmology – the study of the
origin and development of the Universe.
Going where no Mint had gone before, the Mint
of Austria issued the world’s first niobium coin
in 2003. Combining state-of-the-art numismatic design,
technology and immense aesthetic beauty, the annual
Niobium/Silver series has gone from strength to strength,
and the 2015 release may well be the best yet.
Niobium changes colour when heat is applied, and the design
of this year’s release features not just one, but TWO vibrant
colours! Encircled by a ring of 90% silver, and depicting
the galaxy on the obverse and Europe’s Extremely Large
