that have made us the “Sailing Capital of the Caribbean.” 

The BVI archipelago contains a stunning variety of islands ranging from the coral atoll of Anegada with its endless 

white sand beaches to the main island of Tortola and its emerald green mountains. You must see the spectacular 

boulders of Virgin Gorda and the picturesque villages and beaches of Jost Van Dyke, along with the diversity 

and seclusion of the other 40 sister islands, islets and cays. Each island has its unique charm and attractions 

offering our visitors an infinite range of experiences. 

With a rich and diverse culture, our island boasts a number of events and activities throughout the year that 

promote our local history, art, dance and music. The Emancipation Festival, held at the end of July, celebrates 

our culture with more than two weeks of activities and events culminating in a colourful parade of floats and 

costumed troupes. The territory’s premiere traditional dance troupe, BVI Heritage Dancers, can show you how 

to dance to the rhythms of our indigenous “fungi” music. A mural painted by local artists on Tortola’s Ridge 

Road also depicts many aspects of our traditional culture.

Useful Information 

Business Hours 

Hours vary, but most businesses are open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Supermarkets open earlier and close later, and many are open 

on the weekend. Merchant stores are closed on Sundays, and 

most banks are open Monday to Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., 

with extended hours on Fridays. 

Currency 

The United States dollar is the only legal tender in the BVI while 

U.S. traveller’s cheques and credit cards are widely accepted. 

There are several ATM machines located in Road Town, East 

End, Cane Garden Bay and West End on Tortola and in Spanish 

Town on Virgin Gorda. 

Departure Tax 

Every air travel passenger must pay a $20 tax fee in cash 

(cheques are not accepted). Those leaving by sea pay $5, while 

cruise ship passengers pay $7. 

Dress 

Bathing suits and other beachwear are considered appropriate 

only on beaches, at the pool or on a boat. Topless bathing and 

nudity on the beaches are frowned upon. In general, day and 

evening dress are casual. 

Drugs 

Recreational drugs are strictly forbidden. Their possession, sale, 

use or distribution is a criminal offence punishable by law. 

Conviction can lead to heavy fines and jail sentences. 

Fishing 

Non-British Virgin Islanders require a recreational fishing permit 

for the removal of any marine organism from BVI waters. Call the 

Conservation and Fisheries Division at (284) 494-5681 for 

more information. 

Immigration 

Based on U.S. government requirements, effective Jan. 8, 2007, 

all U.S., Canadian, Bermudian and Mexican citizens will require 

a passport to re-enter the United States. 

Internet 

There are several Internet cafés offering e-mail access on Tortola, 

Virgin Gorda, Anegada and at least one on Jost Van Dyke.

Mail and Shipping 

The main post office in Road Town has a philatelic counter and there are sub post offices on Beef Island (Airport), East End and West End in 

Tortola, as well as the larger sister islands. There are various shipping and courier facilities conveniently located in Road Town and Virgin Gorda. 

Medical 

Peebles Hospital, the main general hospital in Road Town, Tortola, also oversees clinics in Tortola, Virgin Gorda and on sister islands. 

All accept walk-in patients and provide modern diagnostic and treatment facilities. The Bougainvillea Clinic in Road Town provides 

aesthetic and constructive surgery. The APEX Medical Centre in the Valley, Virgin Gorda offers lab tests and x-rays while the B&F Medical 

Centre and Eureka Medical Clinic in Road Town, provide the same plus CT scan services. 

Newspapers and Magazines 

Several weekly and monthly publications are available in the BVI and by subscription: The Island Sun, BVI Beacon and BVI StandPoint keep readers 

up-to-date on events and general local and regional news. The Virgin Islands Daily News keeps both Tortola and Virgin Gorda informed 

with international and regional news. The BVI Welcome magazine offers information for tourists, and Limin’ Times offers a detailed Weekly 

Events Guide. All At Sea and Compass offer information for boaters, and the BVI Property Guide provides information on real estate in the BVI. 

Pets 

Pets are allowed into the territory only after an import permit is obtained from the Department of Agriculture. For information, contact the 

Department of Agriculture in Tortola at (284) 495-2532. 

Religious Services 

There are Methodist churches throughout the BVI, as well as other Christian denominations including Anglican (Episcopalian), Baptist, 

Roman Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist and various Pentecostal sects. The Bahai, Hindu and Muslim faiths also have their adherents. 

Telecommunications 

The area code in the BVI is 284. There are public call boxes at various locations throughout the main islands including most marinas and 

Ports of Entry. In Tortola, you will find call boxes at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, Beef Island; opposite the East End Jetty; 

at the East End Post Office; and at Cable and Wireless offices, Road Town. 

Tipping 

A 7-percent government tax and a 10-percent hotel service charge are usually added to hotel bills; additional tipping is optional. It is 

customary to include a 15-percent tip for good service when dining out. 

Transportation 

Air: Regional airlines connect Beef Island with international hubs (e.g. San Juan, Puerto Rico and Antigua) and other Caribbean islands. 

Small planes fly between Beef Island and Virgin Gorda, Anegada, St. Thomas, USVI and San Juan. 

Buses: Mini and safari bus outings are usually arranged by the hotels and are also available for long group trips and scenic sightseeing. 

Car Rentals: Several agencies offer reasonable rates, unlimited mileage, emergency services and additional insurance. A credit card or 

cash deposit and a driver's licence are required. A temporary licence can be obtained from the Traffic Licensing Office or car rental 

agencies for $10. Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. 

Ferry Services 

The main ferry boat docks on Tortola are in Road Town and at West End. Interisland boat services operate several times per day between 

Tortola and several other islands in the BVI including Marina Cay, Virgin Gorda, Peter Island and Jost Van Dyke, as well as the USVI (St. 

Thomas and St. John). 

Taxis 

Taxis are available at the airport, hotels, taxi stands, and other venues throughout the islands. New government rates are in effect but are 

subject to change. Check with your driver in advance. 


Welcome to the British Virgin Islands 

When you think of the British Virgin Islands, your mind 

may drift to a scene of a picture-perfect beach with 

aquamarine waters and majestic palms gently swaying 

in the warm breeze. It’s true that you’ll find that this 

fantasy is a reality in the BVI, but the even better 

news is that there’s a whole lot more to discover in 

these stunning islands, free of the glitter, glamour and 

crowds one might find elsewhere in the Caribbean. In 

fact, these magical isles are steeped in rich history 

and culture just waiting to be discovered. 

The BVI is located 60 miles east of Puerto Rico 

between latitude 18.25 degrees north and longitude 

64.37 degrees west, and 15 miles from St. Thomas 

in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each of the 12 inhabited 

islands has its own captivating charm, and together 

they’re home to more than 25,000 warm and friendly 

people. Tortola is the largest and most populated 

island, and it’s more or less the centre of commerce. 

Road Town, its capital, is a quaint and charming 

blend of West Indian traditions and modern aspirations. 

History enthusiasts are right at home here. 

There is a lot to enjoy on Virgin Gorda, the second 

most populated of the islands. Today, the island 

caters to affluent tourists who frequent its upscale 

resorts. However, its early history was much different. 

The original capital of the BVI was Spanish Town in 

the area known as The Valley. Numerous ruins from 

the plantation era can still be found overgrown by forest 

on the hillsides. 

Anegada is the most remote and unspoiled, 

isolated and undeveloped island in the British Virgin 

Islands, but it may also be the most charming. It’s a 

flat, limestone island very different from the rest of the 

archipelago. The isolation and lack of protected natural 

harbours has left most of the island undisturbed and 

in its natural state. Thus, Mother Nature provides most 

of the attractions. 


Jost Van Dyke, despite being one of the smaller, less populated islands, has a lot to 

offer visitors. Whether travelling by boat or by car, you’ll find everything easily accessible 

on this island known for its beautiful beaches and rich history. 

Other islands, such as Guana Island, Cooper Island, Peter Island, Norman Island and 

Marina Cay are home to hotels and restaurants and are wonderful choices for those who 

want to “get away from it all.” Most of the other islands are either private or uninhabited.

A Glimpse at BVI History 

No history of the British Virgin Islands can 

begin without acknowledging the presence of 

the preColumbian, nomadic Amerindians. These 

Indians, often referred to as peaceful Arawaks and 

fierce Caribs, would voyage in canoes up and down 

the length of the eastern Caribbean from a home 

base in the Orinoco delta and make temporary 

shore-side camps on the islands. Many archaeological 

sites identifying Indian settlements have been found 

in the BVI, particularly in Tortola. 

The European discovery of the BVI is attributed 

to Columbus, who sailed through the waters of the 

archipelago in mid-November 1493. He named the 

group Las Vírgenes (The Virgins) for two reasons. 

First, St. Ursula’s Day had been celebrated recently, 

and the legend of her sainthood describes her and 

11,000 virgins resisting the advances of “ravaging 

Huns.” Secondly, there were so many beautiful 

islands, islets and cays in the group that the name 

seemed appropriate. 

For almost a century after their discovery by 

Columbus, the islands lay quietly undisturbed. 

Sir Francis Drake is known to have sailed through 

the islands on a foray against the Spaniards in 1595, 

and the channel through the islands is named for 

him. For many years, the islands and cays provided 

a haven for privateers, pirates and buccaneers. 

Captain Kid, Sam Bellamy and Blackbeard are just a 

few of the many rascals who reputedly cut a wake 

through The Virgins, and there is solid evidence 

of a huge pirate treasure that was buried on 

Norman Island. 

Eventually the islands were settled, and there 

was some jockeying for supremacy between the 

English and Dutch, until the former finally prevailed. 

By the mid-1700s, the islands began to see the 

beginning of the plantation era. 

Slavery became largely responsible for the big 

profits made from exported items like sugar,

molasses, rum and cotton, which, instead of 

benefiting the islanders, enriched those in Liverpool, 

Bristol and London. The British abolished the slave 

trade in 1807, but emancipation did not come until 

August 1834 when a proclamation was read at 

the Sunday Morning Well in Road Town freeing 

all slaves. 

Along with the rise in prosperity came the threat 

of attack from envious neighbours, and wars in 

Europe were mirrored by wars in the islands. 

Remnants of several forts around the island of 

Tortola can still be seen today and Fort Burt, 

overlooking Road Harbour and now a hotel, 

commands a panoramic view. 

The advent of a more modern BVI began in the 

late 1960s. The islands’ infrastructure was improved 

with updated telephone service and electricity supply. 

A small airport was built at Beef Island and tourism 

businesses began to spring up. Large and luxurious 

charter yachts from St. Thomas began to frequent 

the islands, and The Moorings — the world’s most 

prestigious yacht chartering company — hoisted its 

first sail at its small dock in Road Harbour at the end 

of the decade. The luxurious Little Dix Resort on 

Virgin Gorda, the brainchild of Laurence Rockefeller, 

opened its doors in 1964. 

In 1984, after a double taxation treaty with 

the United States had expired, a law permitting 

the formation of tax-free international business 

corporations passed in the House of 

Representatives. This led to what has become a 

flourishing offshore financial destination. Tourism 

and offshore finance are often appropriately 

described as the “twin pillars” of the BVI’s economy. 

Today, the British Virgin Islands has one of the 

best standards of living in the Caribbean with a 

thriving and robust economy. With friendly people, a 

warm climate and pristine islands in a tropical sea, 

the success story looks set to continue. 


Fun in the Sun 

Sightseeing in the BVI

Tortola 

1. Along the route from the airport to Road Town at Paraquita Bay is 

the Centre for Applied Marine Studies. At the H.L. Stoutt 

Community College Marine Centre, visit the Mangrove Boardwalk and 

Interpretive Centre, a must-see for nature lovers. You can learn about 

mangrove wetlands through posters, displays and live animals. Take 

the boardwalk into the forest or rent a boat and explore the lagoon. 

The Maritime Museum in the Centre is also worth a visit. 

2. A walking tour of Main Street, Road Town offers visitors a great 

introduction to the island’s historical legacy. You’ll pass old government 

buildings and houses made of wood that are literally bolted to the 

ground so high tides don’t wash them away. The town’s architecture is 

rich and varied. Don’t miss the old prison, which looks like something 

out of a Humphrey Bogart movie. If you enjoy museums, the Folk 

Museum in downtown has some interesting artefacts and information 

about the island’s history dating back to the first Amerindian inhabitants. 

There are displays from the plantation era as well as pieces recovered 

from shipwrecks, including the RMS Rhone. 

3. One of the best parks on the island is the J. R. O’Neal Botanic 

Gardens in Road Town. Though it’s only a few acres in size, it 

showcases an incredible collection of native and exotic plants. It’s a 

wonderful place to enjoy a relaxing stroll through the flowers. Be sure 

and plan some time to sit on a bench under the mango tree and take 

in the sights and sounds. There is a $3 admission fee. 

4. Head west out of Road Town on Waterfront Drive, where you’ll find 

the Old Government House that was originally built to house the 

British governor of the territory. Since its restoration, it has served as a 

historical museum. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through 

Friday, and it’s definitely worth a stop and the minimal admission charge. 


With its rich history and cultural diversity, there is much to see and do in the British 

Virgin Islands. Whether your interest is in nature, historical sites, parks, sports or 

panoramic views, you can find it in the BVI. Here is a mere sampling of the many 

unforgettable sights and attractions that can be enjoyed year-round in the islands. 

5. West of Road Town on the coastal highway you’ll pass an 

extensive collection of ruins hidden in the brush. This is popularly 

called "The Dungeon," but was actually a garrison for soldiers 

protecting Tortola in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are some 

massive stone walls and creepy looking unlit rooms from which it 

got its name. 

6. Fort Recovery is one of several forts and ruins that have 

been restored and made available to visitors. These ruins happen 

to be the oldest historic landmark in Tortola. This very important 

piece of preserved local history has terrific views, and it’s both 

entertaining and educational. 

7. For an authentic glimpse back into BVI history, don’t miss the 

Callwood Rum Distillery in Cane Garden Bay. It’s a working 

distillery where you can see how rum was made many years 

ago. Best of all, you can take a bottle of traditional rum home 

with you. 

8. Hikers and adventurers will be right at home at Sage 

Mountain National Park. The many trails there offer hours of 

hiking through a damp forest. It’s a great place to see birds, 

butterflies and wildlife. Along the trails you will find overlooks that 

provide breathtaking views of all the surrounding islands. Those 

who enjoy scenic vistas will thoroughly enjoy this spot, which at 

1,760 feet above sea level, is the highest point in the islands. 

9. As you return to Road Town, pay attention to a prominent set 

of ruins along the road. This is Kingstown, and the ruins are the 

remains of the first Anglican Church built in 1840 for liberated 

Africans in the Americas.

Virgin Gorda 

10. Yacht Harbour is where most of the island’s commercial activity 

takes place. Here you’ll find a BVI Tourist Board office, two banks, a 

grocery store and several charter companies. A nearby shopping centre 

has several stores to suit your needs. Ferries to and from Tortola 

head to nearby docks in St. Thomas Bay. 

11. West of the Copper Mine are enormous boulder fields. Gigantic 

granite boulders are found inland, along the beach and immediately 

offshore. This area known as The Baths is one of the premier attractions 

of the BVI. Be sure to visit this site and wander on the trails exploring the 

grottos, ledges and boulders, many of which are larger than houses and 

can be viewed underwater while snorkelling. It’s one of the most 

picturesque locations on Virgin Gorda. There is a $3 admission fee. 

12. Perhaps the best-known ruins on the island are at the Copper Mine, 

where copper ore was once extracted from the ground. The mine had 

several periods of activity during its 400-year history. Today, it’s part of the 

National Parks Trust and there are plans for its restoration. While there, 

carefully scan the ground for the greenish rocks that contain veins of 

copper ore. 

13. Those who enjoy walking on nature trails should be sure to visit 

Gorda Peak National Park, which occupies the highest point on the 

island. The peak towers more than 1,200 feet above sea level and is 

sometimes hidden in the clouds. Tropical flowers and wildlife are 

abundant. The elevation makes for cool temperatures and pleasant 

hiking, and the views along the trails are stunning. 

14. From the higher elevations you can experience the incredible 

panorama of North Sound. The large, nearly enclosed bay that was 

once a hideout for pirates and swashbucklers is now a haven for 

today’s modern sailing enthusiasts. 

Other Islands 

15. Anegada, the most distant island in the archipelago, boasts miles 

of pristine beaches and is a haven for ecotourists. The public dock at 

the Settlement, where you may see local fishermen returning with their 

catch, is worth a stop. Just offshore you can see large “islands” of 

conch shells. After harvesting the meat, fishermen have been 

depositing the shells on the mounds for centuries. In fact, the 

Amerindians did the same in pre-Columbian times. As part of your 

island tour, make sure to visit the north side beaches. 

Beachside restaurants and bars can be found at Cow Wreck 

Beach and Loblolly. All offer lovely views and great snorkelling 

on shallow reefs. 

16. Despite being one of the smaller, less populated islands, Jost Van 

Dyke has a lot to offer. While there, don’t miss a refreshing dip in the 

“bubbling pool” on the eastern tip, a short walk from the famous 

Foxy’s Taboo restaurant in Great Harbour. When conditions are right, 

it is like sitting in a giant natural Jacuzzi. On the way, you’ll pass a salt 

pond. For nature lovers, this pond alone would be worth the trip, since 

it’s home to ducks, egrets and many shorebirds. White Bay, just 

around the bend from Great Harbour, is a picture-postcard beach with 

little bars with real island ambience. 


Beauty and the Beaches 

One of the main reasons people come to the British Virgin Islands is for its beautiful beaches, which range from stunning to spectacular. 

Here, every time you stand in the soft white sand and wiggle your toes as the warm Caribbean Sea washes over your feet, you’re 

gently reminded that you’re in the tropics. There are beaches where you can walk for miles all alone, and others sprinkled with quaint 

bars and restaurants where you can enjoy rum drinks, feast on local seafood and dance the night away. The BVI’s beaches come in 

all shapes and sizes, both crowded and deserted, and they’re found on both inhabited and uninhabited islands. 

So, where are these beaches and what do they have to offer? Let’s have a look, island by island: 

(Beaches are keyed by letter to the map in the centre pages.) 

Tortola 

A. Smuggler’s Cove, the westernmost accessible beach on Tortola’s north 

shore, is one of the more isolated and little-known beaches in the BVI. The setting 

for the movie The Old Man and the Sea, it lies in a beautiful crescent-shaped bay 

backed by lush green hills and a fascinating salt pond. 

B. Long Bay Beach, just east of Smuggler’s Cove, is a long straight beach quite 

befitting its name. It’s a popular spot since it sits in front of an upscale resort, but 

you can stroll along and find your own little private nook. During some of the 

winter months, the north swell creates large waves. 

C. The long straight beaches of Carrot Bay and Apple Bay vary from soft sand to 

rounded granite rocks and are known as the surfers’ paradise of the BVI. This 

stretch of beach offers hotels, restaurants and bars ranging from the very elegant 

Sugar Mill to the ramshackle collection known as Bomba Shack. 

D. Cane Garden Bay is perhaps the best-known and most popular beach in all 

of the BVI. A gorgeous, soft-sand beach stretches the entire length of the bay, 

with an offshore reef breaking the largest waves. The central portion of the beach 

is where you will find the area’s best-known bars and restaurants, as well as 

water sports rentals, beach chairs, boutiques and gift shops for the souvenir 

hunter and frequent events intended to draw a crowd. 


E. Brewers Bay is a quiet and serene spot for those who want 

to get away from the action. It’s a long, wide beach that gently 

slopes down to the sea. There’s a reef in the middle of the bay 

that offers good snorkelling. Although it’s usually quiet with few 

people on the beach, on Sunday afternoons it can sometimes 

be packed with revellers, live music and lots of barbeques. 

F. Josiah’s Bay is one of the fabulous northeastern coast 

beaches. Long a favourite of the locals, this beach is undeveloped 

except for two small beach bar restaurants. While the surf 

breaking on the beach is spectacular to watch, its undertow can 

present dangerous conditions for swimmers. 

G. Lambert Bay is a spectacular beach with a resort development, 

whose amenities are open to the public. It’s a nice place to enjoy 

a good meal and do a bit of beach combing and swimming. 

H. Long Bay is the largest of four beaches found at Beef Island 

and has a wide and rather steep soft-sand beach. The area is 

undeveloped and offers no services. There are rarely more than a few 

people on the beach, so it’s generally a good place to go for privacy.

I. Brandy Wine Bay is the only public beach on the south side of 

the island and by far the widest in Tortola. It is a long, pristine and 

well-sheltered expanse of white sand. 


J. The Baths lie west of Spanish Town and are a series of incredible 

geologic formations of granite boulders that are as big as houses and 

sit right on the beach. In fact, there are several beaches with names like 

Spring Bay and Devil’s Bay along this coast. All are strewn with boulders 

and little nooks and crannies where you can escape into your own 

world of privacy. 

K. Spring Bay, with its generous sprinkling of boulders and 

crystal-clear blue waters is one of Virgin Gorda’s loveliest beaches. 

L. Devil’s Bay is a powdery beach on the island’s southwest shore that 

is reached by a trail. 

M. Mahoe Bay, just north of Savannah Bay is a gently curving beach 

with vivid blue water. The bay lies at the end of a tropical landscaped 

drive that leads to a restaurant, beach resort and holiday villas. 

N. Trunk Bay, on Virgin Gorda’s western shore, offers a stunning 

white-sand beach that can be reached by boat or by following a rough 

road from Spring Bay. 

O. Savannah Bay, one of the more spectacular shorelines on the 

northern coast, is one long beach with occasional rocky headlands that 

act as natural separations. This gorgeous beach is popular (though 

never crowded) and offers good snorkelling. 

Anegada 

P. Loblolly Bay is just one of Anegada’s many spectacular beaches, but 

it stands out because it’s one of the few places where you’re likely to find 

other beachgoers — and it’s a good place to have a bite to eat or a drink. 

Q. Cow Wreck, on northwestern Anegada is one of the island’s most 

pristine and is home to a small beach bar and restaurant. 

R. Pomato Point on the southwest side of the island is a picture-perfect 

beach that stretches to the west end. It has a small restaurant, bar and 

private museum. 

Jost Van Dyke 

S. White Bay in Great Harbour is clearly the most spectacular stretch 

of sand surrounding the island. Its long straight beach is steep and 

postcard perfect. There’s also good snorkelling on the offshore coral 

reef and some bars and restaurants to add local flavour. 

T. Great Harbour is a long horseshoe-shaped beach with lovely white 

sand and a sprinkling of restaurants and beach bars, however it remains 

a sleepy and tranquil hamlet by day. 

U. Sandy Cay, just east of Jost Van Dyke, is an uninhabited, picturesque 

island ringed by spectacular white soft-sand beaches and swaying palms. 

Accessible only by boat or yacht, the little island has graced many 

magazine covers over the years and offers that magic feeling of paradise. 

V. Sandy Spit, off Green Cay, is an even tinier islet than Sandy Cay with 

the same attributes. 


W. Peter Island has several nice beaches, with perhaps the most 

famous being Deadman’s Bay. It’s a spectacular, wide crescent-shaped 

beach bordered by tall coconut palms and home to the upscale Peter 

Island Resort. 

X. Cooper Island has a great beach in Manchioneel Bay, with its soft 

sand and lots of swaying palms. Here you’ll find the Cooper Island 

Beach Club, which is a perfect place to sip a cocktail while 

enjoying the sunset. 

Y. Vixen Point on Prickly Pear, just north of Virgin Gorda, is a long 

swath of white sand with a beach bar and shop for watersports rentals. 

It’s a favourite among boaters and guests from neighbouring islands.

Tantalizing Treats 


Just as life itself takes on a more vibrant character in the 

tropics, the food at many of the islands’ restaurants is also 

more colourful, thanks to the many herbs, spices, fruits 

and vegetables that are indigenous to the region. Pungent 

flavourings like ginger root, hot pepper, curry powder, 

cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg are staples in Caribbean 

kitchens. The variety of fresh fruit and vegetables is diverse 

and plentiful: pineapple, papaya, guava, mango, soursop, 

citrus, banana and, of course, the ubiquitous coconut. 

Vegetables include callaloo, okra, plantain, breadfruit, 

avocado, christophene, and various sundry sweet and hot 

peppers. There are also a variety of “ground provisions” 

such as yams, eddoes, tannia and dasheen. With all of the 

wonderful local ingredients, it requires only the touch of a 

culinary artist to create a masterpiece. 

Not only is there an abundance of fresh ingredients 

available, but the potpourri of nationalities and cultures in 

the British Virgin Islands has created some very popular 

fusion cuisine as well. Descendants of the original Africans 

still enjoy dishes such as salt fishcakes, conch stew, souse 

(pork trimmings chopped, pickled and jelled), bull foot 

soup and goat water (a rich and flavourful stew). Spicier 

foods have migrated from the southern islands of Trinidad 

and Tobago in the form of curries, rotis (breads) and 

condiments like kuchela and chutney. French and African 

peoples have come together to bring us the delights of 

Creole cuisine, and more recently European and Asian 

restaurateurs have arrived to cater to visitors who seek a 

wide and varied menu. 

Locally caught seafood is plentiful in the BVI, and 

the archipelago is fortunate to have a large offshore reef 

system that’s home to the Anegada lobster — said to be 

the sweetest in the Caribbean. Many restaurants offer 

these fresh from the tank, barbecued and served 

with melted butter and fresh squeezed limejuice. The 

fishermen of Anegada can be credited with keeping the 

islands stocked with fresh fish such as swordfish, tuna, 

wahoo, snapper and grouper. 

So go ahead and savour the flavours and the foods of

Hiking 

There are several good hikes in the BVI, with the most rewarding being the meandering Sage Mountain National Park trail in Tortola. At 1,760 feet 

above sea level, hikers enjoy not only abundant nature, but also breathtaking views of nearby and far-off islands. There are also wonderful trails 

through and around The Baths on Virgin Gorda, where there are lots of beaches to stop at for a cooling swim. On Jost Van Dyke, an easy, short 

but intriguing walk culminates at the “bubbly pool,” a crevice in the rocks with a natural Jacuzzi. Whenever and wherever you choose to hike, 

though, remember to wear proper shoes, take a bottle of water and bring along the sun block. 

Horseback Riding 

If you think you’d enjoy being in tune with nature while on horseback, then maybe an equestrian tour is right for you. Horseback riding along wooded 

trails up mountain passes and then down to a stretch of sandy beach for a good gallop can make for an enjoyable experience in Tortola. Shadow, 

a horse lover, has stables above Brewers Bay where he welcomes visitors to look around and sign up for an island tour. 


The Sporting Life 


In the British Virgin Islands, nearly everybody spends their leisure time outdoors. And with sunshine 90 percent 

of the time and temperatures between 70 and 95 degrees year-round, it’s a perfect place for active travellers. 

The following are just a few of the many sports and activities to enjoy in the BVI.

Tennis 

Tennis is a wonderful game to play year-round in the tropics, 

especially if you avoid the midday sun. Most resorts offer tennis, but 

courts can usually be rented by non-guests. 

Working Out 

For those wanting to stay fit while on holiday and not pack on the 

weight from all those sumptuous Caribbean meals and tropical 

cocktails, there are numerous gyms where you can work out. Most will 

gladly accommodate temporary members or one-time visitors. 

Biking 

If biking is your thing, you’ll be glad to know an array of bicycles can 

be rented in Road Town’s Port Purcell. Anegada, which is a flat island, 

may seem like a biker’s paradise — that is, until you try biking on a 

sand road. Most visitors opt for a leisurely gentle ride along the island’s 

coast road. A good source for cyclists is the BVI’s Cycling Federation, 

a progressive body with a growing list of events. Visitors can join in on 

anything from time trial races on the flat land, to gruelling mountain 

bike races up impossible hills and exhausting triathlons. 

Surfing 

In the winter months, north swells from Atlantic storms bring large 

breaking waves to the island’s northern shore, and in some locations 

the break provides nearly perfect surfing conditions. Josiah’s Bay, 

Capoon’s Bay and Cane Garden Bay are three favourites with local 

surfing aficionados. Recent competitions have been staged at one or 

more of these venues. 

Sailing 

Located in the middle of the trade wind belt with almost continuous 

easterly breezes, the British Virgin Islands is a mecca for sailors. 

Besides that, the archipelago of some 50 islands, islets and cays 

provides many beautiful and sheltered anchorages. The islands are all 

in close proximity, so an anchorage is always nearby — if one spot 

looks too busy it’s usually no trouble to quickly look at the chart and 

sail to a different location. The anchorages are many and diverse in 

nature; some have sandy beaches lined with palm trees, while others 

are rocky with pebble beaches and good for shelling, and still others 

offer good snorkelling. Many BVI anchorages have moorings that 

make anchoring a breeze. There is no shortage of outfits offering yacht 

charters, either with a full crew or bareboat, where you rent the boat, 

provision it yourself and sail it with your own crew. For beginners, there 

are several sailing schools that can offer an introduction to sailing and 

qualify those that complete it to cruise up to a 50-foot yacht — all in 

just two weeks. 

Snorkelling 

The BVI is recognized as one of the top destinations in the world for 

snorkelling due to the many sparsely populated islands and cays in the 

territory and its relatively undisturbed coral reefs. Snorkelling can be 

enjoyed by almost everyone — the only prerequisite is to know how to 

swim. If you don’t bring your own gear, most dive shops will rent a set 

of mask, fins and snorkel. There is fine snorkelling off The Baths in 

Virgin Gorda, where corals attach themselves to underwater boulders 

and small caves make for unusual fish homes. Other favourite spots 

are the Indians, the Treasure Caves, the south shore of the Bight, 

Diamond Reef off Great Camano, Cistern Rock off Cooper Island, 

Virgin Gorda’s Mountain Point, Anegada’s north shore and Sandy Spit, 

next to Jost Van Dyke’s Green Cay. 

Scuba Diving 

Most dive centres offer a basic half-day “resort course” which entails 

practicing in the pool or shallow seawater for about half an hour, some 

basic theory and a shallow dive in about 25 feet of water. The whole 

process can be completed in half a day. If you wish to become fully 

certified, you’ll need about five days and a dive centre that’s offering 

the course. Feel free to explore the BVI’s many wrecks and dive sites, 

the most famous of which is the wreck of the Rhone, a Royal Mail ship 

that sank during a hurricane in 1867. Other popular sites include Alice 

in Wonderland, with giant mushroom corals; the wreck of the 

Chikuzen, a Korean refrigerator ship that sank in open water west of 

Virgin Gorda and teems with pelagic fish; and Wreck Alley, where 

several hulks were purposely sunk to make interesting dive sites. 

Windsurfing 

With winds blowing steadily from 15 to 30 knots, sea temperatures in 

the 80s, and clean, clear water, the BVI is a perfect environment for 

windsurfing. Nanny Cay is a windsurfing centre with the Sir Francis 

Drake Channel stretching five miles to windward. Others include Trellis 

Bay and Eustatia Sound, Virgin Gorda. If your dream is to someday 

“jump a wave” or “carve a gybe,” you can rent equipment and/or take 

lessons at The Bitter End Yacht Club, Nanny Cay or Trellis Bay. 

Kayaking 

This is a pastime for the entire family and a great way to explore 

hard-to-reach areas in bays, inlets and rivers. The BVI is one of the top 

destinations in the world for sea kayakers who are drawn by its easy 

access to so many different islands. Daily kayak rentals are 

widely available, especially on Anegada and along Virgin 

Gorda’s North Sound. 

Fishing 

The BVI is an ideal destination to partake of a day of sport fishing. 

There are several well-equipped boats available for charter, and 

excellent fishing grounds are always nearby. Probably the most famous 

is the North Drop where the continental shelf drops off to more than 

200 fathoms. Tortola and Anegada both offer fly fishing tours with 

guides and flat boats. 

Kiteboarding 

Some believe kiteboarding is unquestionably the most exhilarating new 

water sport to come to the islands in years. In the BVI, you can find 

instruction in Virgin Gorda’s North Sound. Check at the Bitter End’s
