Peer Mentoring
Peer Mentoring
has been
developed
as one of the
initiatives at
Bow. As part of
the initiative,
students run
mediation sessions and support the anti-bullying campaign. Sports
based peer mentoring workshops are organised in the school and
facilitated by a national programme ‘Beatbullying’, on a yearly basis,
aimed at Year 7 students.
X-TRAORDINARY
AUTHOR ADDS POETRY
TO MATHS EQUATION
Earlier this term, world famous poet, author and former children’s
laureate, Michael Rosen came to visit us at Bow.
The visit was arranged
by Ms Trapp with the
Tower Hamlets 14-19
Mathematics Consultant
and the London Grid for
Learning.
Michael came to our
library where Year 7
were split into three
groups to hear him
perform some poems, ask questions
and to do a short workshop on writing poetry with a maths focus. We
learned how Michael thought up poems in his head and joined in to
help him perform some of them.
Year 7 then to began to learn how to write maths poetry for themselves.
The authors of the best poems received signed copies of Michael’s book.
Year 11 learn
life saving skills
As a requirement for their ASDAN course, a group of Year 11 students
recently trained as qualified first aiders. A member of the British Red
Cross delivered a four hour course where students
learned to assess an unconscious casualty for
life threatening conditions, administer CPR,
practise the recovery position and how to dress
open wounds. They participated in discussions
and worked in small groups to further their
understanding of the procedures. All students
were assessed throughout the session and are
now qualified first aiders, able to offer assistance at school and in
the community. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and
are planning to deliver mini-training sessions to younger students
in the school.
Bow boys experience
farm life in the city
Small groups of Year 11 students, as part of their ASDAN course, have
volunteered at the Spitalfields City Farm. In total they spent 10 hours
assisting in and learning about the day-to-day operations of a city
farm, as well as enhancing their knowledge of their
community. During the sessions, students experienced
feeding and caring for the animals, planting seeds,
farming discussions and activities around the
environment and the importance of local produce.
The students have had a fantastic experience at the farm
and a number of them will be volunteering during their
own time in the future.
Students were shown how they could publish their own poetry on the
‘Perform-a-Poem’ site. This e-safe site has been created to enable
young people to perform their own poetry, as well as watch the
performances of others. Developed following Michael Rosen’s many
popular poetry performances, this site is a great opportunity for young
people to perform and share poetry.
