NewsdeskMr. Abhisek Pahadi, B. Tech., 6 th Sem., Team e_newsAs the world catches a glimpse of dawning decade, clouds of turmoil engulfs the oil richcountry, Egypt, with hundreds of thousands of common man ranging from students and doctors to joblesspoor join hands in protest against the embattled president, Hosni Mubarak, thereby demanding for hisimmediate ouster. The political scenario changed in Myanmar with the election of Thein Sein, a former PM and longtime adjutant to Myanmar’s military dictators as the president of country’s newly inaugurated parliament worldremained stunned as a major terrorist attack rocked Russia when an explosive device was set off by a suicidebomber at Domodedevo international airport thereby killing at least 31 and severely injuring another 131. Natureshowed it’s harsh face when a severe flood hit Australia’s Brisbane city thereby killing 38 people and leaving manyother homeless. In another event of political turbulence in Pakistan, severed clerics have issued fatwas againstformer Pakistan minister and declared him infidel for calling for changes in the blasphemy law. On the nationalforefront, the much awaited mobile no. portability scheme was flagged off by PM, a move that will allow users toswitch operators without l0osing their phone numbers. In another case of political upheaval in the country, Karnatakagovernor H.R.Bharadwaj sanctioned to prosecute chief minister B.S.Yeddyurappa on corruption charges givingrise to a state wide protest. In a surprise development, PM resets it’s cabinet with induction of 3 new faces, 3 promotions but no exits.Judiciary took its own course with the arrest of former Telecom Minister A.Raja for being allegedly involved in themulticrore 2G spectrum scam. A current of uncertainty ran through the student community when the case ofhundreds of students being duped by a dodgy California based university named “Tri-valley university came to thelimelight. In a noble measure to give dignity to each and every individual of the republic India, Census 2011 will firsttime include “other” as an option for the question on genders. To the much disappointment to the cricket lovingKolkata fans, the Eden Gardens has been dropped as the venue of the high profile India England match during theimminent World Cup due to delays in renovation work. The onset of new decade brought happiness to the peopleof Orissa. To begin with, judiciary proved its might with Supreme court upholding the life sentence awarded to DaraSingh, who was convicted for burning alive Australian missionary Graham Staines along with his two minor sons inJanuary 1999. As a myriad mixture of cheers and tears, the Union govt. finally gave green signal to the much hypedPOSCO project but introduced but introduced 60 additional conditions to the Korean company for setting up the12$billion steel plant at Paradip. On the other side, as an indication of political embarrassment to the country, 59Afghan students studying at Ravenshaw university left for Delhi after a violence at the campus but returned laterafter necessary security arrangements were made for them. As a shame to the state govt., women and childdevelopment minister Pramila Mallick was found involved in the huge corruption in the midday meal scheme andsupplementary nutrition programme, thus leading to her ouster from the Naveen Patnaik led cabinet. Taking aflashback on the business world, shivers ran through the Dalal street with sensex continuing to move in descendingtrend. In a major change of supremacy, Wipro chairman Azim Premji, in a decisive mode, ousted the company’sco-CEO, Girish Paranjpe and Suresh Vaswani and replaced it by an insider T.M.Kurien as the software giantlagged behind in profit growth as compared to it’s peers, TCS&Infosys. Moving to the sports arena, the state is allset to roll out the most exciting cricket event, World Cup 2011, with India, Sri Lanka&Bangladesh hosting the megaevent. We wish all the best to the Men In Blue in their journey to the cup. Mr. Naquib Akhtar, B. Tech., 6 th Sem., Team e_newsGoing against the customary Sportscast, this edition shall not begin with cricket but with the34 th National Games which finally got to see the light of day on 12 th of February. After seeingsix postponements and seven government changes the National Games began with much fan fare and anamazing opening ceremony graced by the ‘who’s and who’s’ of Indian politics, sports and entertainment industry. The event saw many records being created and new stars coming forward. In the end Services once again toppedthe medal list followed by Manipur. In cricket India lost its first ever chance to win a test series in South Africa bydrawing the series 1-1 retaining its numero uno status. The ‘Men in Blues’ however lost the One-Day Series 3-2though it was witness to some serious “Pathanic Verses”. Australia revenged its painful Ashes loss by thrashingEngland 6-1 in the One-Day Series. The tainted trio of Pakistan was left high and dry when ICC pronounced itsjudgment. Salman Butt got banned for 10 years, Muhammad Asif for 7 years and green horn bowler MohammadAamer for 5 years. But the biggest newsmaker in cricket was the IPL auctions. Gautam Gambhir turned out to bethe dark horse after bagging a contract worth $2.4 million with KKR. The Shah Rukh Khan led team didn’t stopthere by also bagging marauder Yusuf Pathan for a record fee of $2.1million and Jacques Kallis. Punjab failed toretain Yuvraj Singh who went to Team Pune along with Robin Utthappa. Saurav Ganguly created news by not gettinga single bid along with Brian Lara and Chris Gayle. Rookie Saurav Tiwari too created ripples by getting a bid of $1.6million by Bangalore Royal Challengers. And now coming to the Cricket World Cup 2011. The event saw a glitzy opening in Dhaka on the19 th of Feb. In the first match India demolished Bangladesh comprehensively which saw Sehwagscore a lightening century. In other big matches Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka and England were heldout to a draw against India in a high scoring nail biting match which saw two great centuries by‘the god’ Sachin Tendulkar and the English captain Andrew Strauss. In football the Barcelona juggernaut demolished its opponents and created a new record of 16 straight league winsand steering clear of arch rivals Real Madrid by 7 points to lead the ‘La Liga’. In England, Manchester Unitedcontinues to lead the league table following some impressive wins against the top teams. ManU is followed byArsenal on second and cross town rival Manchester City on third. Londoners Chelsea is currently on fourth. Theywere some mind boggling transfers this transfer window. Chelsea signed Fernando Torres form Liverpool for aBritish record of 50 million pounds. Liverpool in turn signed Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez from Ajax F.C. Withthe quarter final rounds of the Champions League getting underway there are some mouth watering clashes in theoffing. In lawn tennis the Serbian Novak Djokovic won his second grand slam by claiming the Australian Open, defeatingScott Andy Murray. Kim Clijsters won the women’s trophy on the way to becoming the first mom to claim the topspot on the ATP rankings. Indian Narain Karthikeyen makes his return to F1 racing with team Hispania this seasonwhich is scheduled to begin with the Valencia circuit in Feb end.And to end with the NIST family wishes team India the very best to go all the way—“Jeet Lo Jahan”..That was all for this edition of Sportscast. Cynosure of all EyesMs. Neena Choudhary, B. Tech., 6 th Sem., Team e_newsAnniversaries and birthdays are always special, aren’t they? ☺ Here while we celebratethe 9 th anniversary of e_news thoughts poured in of how important e_news has become to ourNIST family. E_news coming up with all the college updates, facts and also the global news in a nutshell haslead to a revival of NIST, and the pleasure is truly all ours. Media has brought an enlistment into the social world.Ah! I am now trapped into thinking of the role of Social Media Networking Sites. They have become one of the hottest commodities in the international online marketplace. And if you don’t believe justask the citizens of Egypt, where social networks played a major role in their recent revolution. It was difficult to findany single political party or activist group that promoted the “Revolution of January 25” there in Egypt. Neither werethere any newspaper articles, official press releases or TV news segments, instead we could find facebookpages, tweets and YouTube videos. And when the Egyptian government shut down the Internet and cell phoneservice, the movement continued to spread by word of mouth, hastily printed flyers and makeshift signs. The “WeAre All Khaled Said” Facebook page that has been widely regarded as the catalyst that marked the firstripples of revolution within Egypt has grown tremendously with people all over the world joining in deliveringtheir messages. This hasn’t been the only uprising led by the social media. The election of the 44th Presidentof the United States in 2008 has been accredited in part to the massive support from young voters. Many of thesevoters got “plugged-in” to the campaign through Facebook and other Internet outlets. Right now, there are alreadyFacebook pages to re-elect or not to re-elect President Barack Obama in 2012, along with dozens of similarsites for an election that is less than two years away. From campaign messages to updates about their personal life, politicians are moving with the times and headingonline and they all agree social media is a quick and easy way of communicating with a wide audience. The tweetsgive the Newspapers and TV news channels the latest information about the haps and happenings of the well renownedpersonalities. And we can proudly say that we need not read newspapers to get the news. Withoutaccessing to any of the news channels we know where Mrs. Sushma Swaraj will be campaigning in thecoming days, or the comments form Mr. Sashi Tharoor which drew him to controversies. How cool is this!Social Media for recruiting sounds much cooler. The employment recruiters have accepted the challenge to turntheir organization’s social network presence into a powerful recruitment tool and integrate it into their current strategies. These facts, coupled with the ever-growing speed and access to the Internet and the social sites like Facebook,Twitter and YouTube, can only lead one to wonder about the where and when the next “Revolution of January 25” willbe. Perhaps it will be a revolution with a different cause and a different result. But one can be assured that the Internetand sites like Facebook and its young users will play a prominent role. People on the ground are recording andtweeting the latest developments and the world is receiving first hand, unedited, uncensored, and unaltered news viaTwitter. It has sparked unity among groups of people regardless of class, religion, or ethnic background. Ithas reminded people of the common thread we share, our desire for progress. We all undoubtedly accept and appreciate the role of the Social Media Networking Sites. But then it is not alwaysgood to go with the flow. These sites are just as wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Seeing all the benefits Isuppose a few harms can be neglected. So, is it wise to block the access of such sites in our college?[Any suggestions or feedback regarding the article are welcome and can be mailed to me.neenac@gmail.com]National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur, 761008 14 of 18

SAT SAYS: V DAY... girls & thornsMr. Kewal Krishna, B. Tech., 6th Sem., Team e_newsOYes! SAT has arrived one more time to shove the boredom out of your dull and monotonic lives andtake you to heavenly abodes. And hey…its SAT’s favorite month of the year…LOVE-U-ARY(no punintended).Much water has passed down the bridge since St.Valentine’s departure to the ultimate saint, and truly speaking he won’tregret that move at all. What was meant to be a celebration of love has turned into… well lets see for ourselves. You allare aware of the Valentine’s week aren’t you- the rose day and the chocolate day, the promise day and the teddy day, and ofcourse the very important ones- hug day, kiss day and the VALENTINES DAY itself? SAT knows you remember them (it wasa rhetorical question of course). Well SAT would like to give a nascent perspective of them. Let’s talk Business.ROSE DAY: While you have to get up early to go the florist and get a red rose for your loved one (and SAT knows that you hategetting up early and don’t want to spend a day’s worth of pocket money on some stupid red rose but we all know GIRLS…),the thorns, i.e., the moral police break their busy schedule of sitting idle in the sun and gather themselves.PROPOSE DAY: Those anxious few seconds while you are on your knees waiting for a yes are from the same day when thethorns (moral police… didn’t SAT already told you) propose a plan to their head leader on how to harass people on V DAY.CHOCOLATE DAY: Again you have to let go your wallet because GOD has- and this SAT can never figure out why- given specialtaste buds to the EVES which fall prey to those sweet little things. While CADBURY is the one having the last laugh and youkeep spending (read wasting) your money (read DAD’S hard earned money), the thorns just sloth around while the clockticks over.TEDDY DAY: Another one of those bewildering aspect of the woman psyche- what is this huge fascination with stuffed goods? The thorns (come on, you have to get it now- its moral police) actually enjoy this day as it symbolizes them, well at least theirbellies or should SAT say their teddy-bellies.PROMISE DAY: Now you have to promise her something. When will she realize that men are anything but men of word? Anyways while you promise her to treat her like a princess and get her the moon and the stars, the thorns start featuring ondifferent TV networks and make a promise that if they find a couple roaming around during the V DAY they will marry them off(HA HA HA. If SAT had a girlfriend then SAT would certainly roam around that day because then SAT would be married and allthe marriage costs along with the courage to tell mom & dad about the girl will not be a necessity. Boys are you listening?)HUG DAY & KISS DAY: These two should always occur together, not necessarily in the same order. And the thorns… well whocares about them if you already are hugging and kissing. And now, drum rolls please…VALENTINES DAY: The race begins, to meet the one you love without being noticed because if you are seen today all hellbreaks loose. Any other day it wouldn’t have mattered but not today, for this day is a day to catch the most dangerous sinnersof them all- LOVERS and punish the biggest sin of them all-LOVE.SAT never knew that love was not a part of the Indian tradition and culture but if they say so they must be correct because theyare the ones who have seen the world and are experienced and matured enough to tell us what is right and wrong. And youare little kids trying to adopt the western culture. ARE YOU? SAT has got only one thing to say that love is not a sin but publicdisplay of love just to be called cool is not right either, so just do what your heart says you to do because true emotions & lovecan never be indecent.Okay then, its time to go as SAT has a date to be present at. Until next time, keep loving one and all as ALBUS DUMBELDOREsays: LOVE IS THE SOLUTION TO EVERYTHING (it was something like that, the point is you got the message).>National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur, 761008 15 of 18

Subject: NISTians shine @ TCS-Thanks to NISTFrom: “Aswanikumar Nayak” Date: Thu, January 20, 2011 11:50 pmTo: smudali@nist.eduDear Sir,After entering into the new corporate life, I have come across many substantial evidences which will alwaysmake an NISTian to stand proudly in any corner of the world. Our college has really the best in placepractices that nurture the young minds in best possible way. Say it technology, innovation, or extra-curricularactivities; in every part NISTians will always stand ahead of others. I would like to site few instances thatmade me extremely happy in the morning of my career. In one of the sessions during the training program ofTCS, the English instructor asked-How many of you are aware of the word- Phonetics;. Suddenly, couple ofhands raised in air, and all of them were of NISTians. After inquiring about the college name of the handraisers, the instructor said I really appreciate the college to make it’s students fit globally. During the training,we had to deal with UNIX operating system only. All most all of the students used to face difficulty in handlingthe less popular yet secured OS. Only exceptions were the NISTians. Thanks to the UNIX classes during1st year and the lab sessions in the subsequent years at NIST. The whole training batch was divided intosome groups. In all the groups, the most popular associate in terms of technical stuffs and/or extra-curricularactivities was a NISTian. We did really enjoy a lot during the training program and are continuing the sameat our base branches as well. There do exist some gaps between the work being executed in the corporateworld and the education pattern, but one needs to be dynamic and open to accept all the opportunities in thefuture in order to shine brightly amongst the rest. This mail of mine was intended for saying my college and allothers who are a part of my college that- I will always be grateful for the deeds and gifts of my college. I amnow well trained because I was well educated in my college. I am sure my college must be continuing withmore spark and energy with the essence of innovation for the future engineers. All the best to all the NISTiansfor a bright future ahead. From: Bhawani Shankar Pani bspani@yahoo.comTo: Sangram Mudali smudali@rediffmail.comCc: prnanda@visa.comSubject: Re: Thanks & Best wishesDear Mr. Mudali,Last week, on my way back from Raipur, I met one of your illustrious ex-student Mr. Prasant Nanda who isworking with VISA at their Singapore hub in their Global Open System Development wing. I was indeedvery impressed with the way he is committed to his profession and employers and also the way he thinks ofhis alma-mater.Like many young and successful professional, Prasant too has dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and dosomething for NIST. I discussed with him about Dr. Romesh Wadhwani- the founder of Symphony Systemsin USA, who is supporting the business incubation center at IIT Mumbai and also the NEN program ofentrepreneur and Mentor development program in India. I don’t think I could sell my ideas all that well butone thing is for sure. You have an excellent pool of knowledge and financial resource in your ex-students,who, if brought together and given a chance, can bring lot of good to NIST and Orissa. In fact - I suggested to Prasant that if he has an idea on which he could plan becoming an entrepreneur, hecan as well put that idea to be worked on in the NIST Business incubation center utilizing the services ofstudents and faculty who can later join him as partners once the enterprise takes off. . I am sure you know ofmany cases from your times in the USA where such field testing has been done in India before the projectsponsors quit their USA jobs and move into India at the take-off stage of their enterprises.Anyway, I leave the idea with you and Prasant to make things happen in the days to come.Rest all fine.
