The sixth event in the Trenchless Middle 

East series will be held in Abu Dhabi on 

March 15 to 17 2010, supported by the 

Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company, 

the International Society for Trenchless 

Technology and the Contractors Association. 

The event is the region’s largest and 

most prestigious meeting for trenchless 

technology (NDRC) professionals in 

the business of installing and repairing 

underground utilities with minimum 

surface disruption. 

Known colloquially as No-Dig technology 

in many parts of the world and also NDRC 

(Non Disruptive Road Crossing) in the 

Gulf region, this is a unique opportunity 

for suppliers, manufacturers and service 

providers to showcase their products and 

services to municipalities, consultants, 

engineers, city planners, <strong>traffic</strong> authority 

managers and more.

is on record specifying that the latest 

trenchless tunnelling technology will be 

used in its delivery. 

There is no other event in The Middle 

East which brings together the latest 

technological innovations displayed by

this specific market under one roof. The 

exhibitors range from the small innovators to 

the larger international players. Trenchless 

Middle East Abu Dhabi 2010 will be held 

at the Officers Club and Hotel, the two-day

Project Details 

To install electric cables on one of the 

most congested <strong>traffic</strong> signals on C-Ring 

Road in Doha (Toyota Signal) in hard 

ground conditions where there are 

numerous existing utilities: 

Length of drilling 140m 

Ducts being pulled 2x250mm and 2x 110mm 

Diameter of hole is 24” (600mm) 

Machine and Accessories 

The project was executed by a Vermeer 

East increased considerably.

among some of the vast developments 

where Vermeer equipment has been 

used or is still being used by some 

of the largest International and Local 

Contractors. 

Currently Vermeer Trenchers, Terrain 

D100x120 Series II. 

The machine was equipped with a 

mud motor to be able to successfully drill 

the pilot bore in hard rock conditions. 

The mud motor performed superbly 

and was able to cut through the hard 

rock and the contractor was able to avoid 

all underground surfaces and meet the 

exit target point successfully. 

The mud motor was equipped with a 

5.75” TCI Tri-Cone Bit. 

Heavy Duty Rock Reamers with TCI 

Levelers and directional drilling machines 

are working in UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, 

Cutters, were used to enlarge the hole 

from the pilot stage to the required hole 

size of 600mm. In order to achieve that, 

and due to the hardness of rock in that 

area the following reaming stages were 

required. 

The first reaming stage was performed 

by using a 12” TCI Rock Reamer and 

subsequently three more reaming stages 

of 16”, 20” and 24” were performed. 

It was very crucial to maintain a 

continuous and well regulated mud flow, 

Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon and many 

other areas within the Middle East. 

to ensure that the rock cuttings were 

properly flushed out in order to 

avoid getting stuck while pulling the 

HDPE pipes. 

Results 

The ducts and hence cables were 

successfully installed in a matter of less 

than a week from start date without any 

interruption of <strong>traffic</strong> on one of Doha’s 

busiest <strong>traffic</strong> signals.

UNCOMPROMISING EFFICIENCY 

IN TIGHT SCHEDULE 

In June 2009, the Swiss Arpe AG 

handled a sewer rehabilitation with 

tight time constraints. The rehabilitation 

company installed about 340 metres of 

Brandenburger GFRP liner on the premises 

of the Zürich Airport using a trenchless 

method. The BLUETEC® UVA light 

curing process provided extremely quick 

installation and curing times. 

A construction site on an airport 

invariably poses a special challenge. For 

the sewer rehabilitation in the areas of the 

bus terminal, the cargo terminal as well as 

one of the airfields, the sewer rehabilitation 

team of Arpe AG was forced to work under 

tight time constraints and employing 

special safety measures. In order to 

maintain the daily operations of the airport, 

the rehabilitation was done at night from 

June 22 to 25, 2009. 

The order by Unique, the airport’s 

operating company (Flughafen Zürich 

AG), included the installation of 39.7 

metres of DN 600 inliner in the area of 

a bus and train terminal, three sections 

of DN 300 liner with lengths of about 

26, 57, and 59 metres in the cargo 

area, as well as two 79-metre-sections 

of DN 600 liner at airfield Bravo. For the 

rehabilitation circular-profile sewers, the 

company relied on light-curing inliners 

made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic 

(GFRP) by Brandenburger, combined with 

Brandenburger’s new BLUETEC® curing 

technology. It excels through easy handling 

on-site, improved curing times, and a 

patented quality and curing control. 

The operating company has relied on 

light-curing liners for years . 

The Zürich Airport has about 125 

kilometres of main collection drains and 

400 kilometres of inlets and drainage 

lines. In 1999, the state of the sewers was 

assessed in a complete inspection, which 

was repeated in 2009. The recorded results 

were entered in databases serving as the 

planning basis for a maintenance scheme 

that involves continuous rehabilitation 

measures. “Light-curing liners have been 

used for four years now,” explains Arpe 

project manager Antonio Lopez. “The 

installation and curing times, the quality 

and hardness have never failed to meet our 

requirements.” 

A damage analysis of the sections 

currently scheduled for rehabilitation shows 

fragmentation, cracks, and leaking pipe 

joints. The sewers in the terminal and cargo 

areas are 40 years old, those at the airfield 

area only about 20 years. “The fact that 

we’re seeing cracks already is probably 

due to an increased load from take-offs 

and landings”, says Heinz Künzler of SBU, 

the engineering firm contracted for the 

rehabilitation. Any work on the airfield has 

to wait until the starts and landings are 

finished for the day. Likewise, operations in 

the cargo zone cannot be interrupted. By 

day, there is a large volume of lorry <strong>traffic</strong>. 

It is therefore a great benefit if the entire 

rehabilitation measure can be completed 

in one night, Künzler explains. The tender 

documents had not specified the type of 

liner. However, a system’s installation and 

curing times were a criterion used in the 

assessment of the offers. “This factor was 

in favour of Arpe and the Brandenburger 

system.” 

The curing of 40 metres of DN 600 took 

only about an hour. 

The company based in Arisdorf near 

Basel has rehabilitated sewers at the 

Zurich Airport for two years. The current 

order was one of the company’s first 

assignments using the new BLUETEC® 

curing system. The liners were preimpregnated 

with polyester resin at the 

factory prior to delivery to the construction 

site, so there was no need to handle resins 

or chemicals on-site. In a very short time, 

the experienced team installed and cured 

80 metres of liner in the first night. With 

the BLUETEC® curing device and its UVA 

light chain, the curing time for a 40-metre 

section of DN 600 with a wall thickness of 

5.4 millimetres was only about an hour. 

Keeping the tight schedule therefore was 

no problem. “It’s just great to work with the 

new BLUETEC® equipment”, says Arpe 

foreman Stefan Lüdi. “I don’t think there 

is anything better.” Besides speed, he also 

praises the monitoring system: “You always 

know what the inside of the liner looks like 

even before it’s cured. During the curing 

process, a log is kept detailing every metre, 

with data on temperature, speed, and 

pressure.” 

Immediately after curing, there was 

a leakage test under the supervision of 

the engineering firm and the client, with 

consistently satisfactory results. Then the 

inlets were cut open. “Working after 12.00 

am is a little risky”, Lüdi summarises. 

After all, it is harder to avoid errors when 

you’re tired and working under time 

constraints. “It’s a good thing that this 

technology enables us to work cleanly 

and quickly. We were able to complete the 

entire rehabilitation measure, including 

acceptance and setting up and cleaning up 

the construction site, in one night.”

Launched by Zenath Group in the year 

2004, this innovative technology is of 

great use for the utility industry like;

SPEED OF THE ESSENCE 

AS QATAR CHOOSES HDD 

Qatar, an emirate of The Middle 

East which occupies the small Qatar 

Peninsula on the north-eastern coast of 

the larger Arabian Peninsula, is bordered 

by Saudi Arabia to the south, but is 

otherwise surrounded by the seas of 

the Persian Gulf. Given its location, port 

activities are vital to the local economy. 

As part of a project to install an 

additional 11 kV electrical power supply 

cable to the port of Ras Laffan in the 

emirate, Qatar Petroleum commenced 

“GTC-05-199-ED.” The new cable 

installation work started in May 2006 

and is scheduled for completion in May 

2007. 

Part of the project required the new 

power cable ducts to pass beneath 

various roadways. Because the project 

is located inside a highly protected 

and secure oil-field refinery complex 

in the Middle East, road excavation for 

such utility installations is prohibited. 

This is largely required in order to 

maintain production capability at the oil 

facility and to ensure all roads remain 

accessible for security purposes. 

With these access restrictions in 

mind, horizontal directional drilling 

(HDD) was selected as the best option 

for completing the new cable installation 

works. Specialist electrical engineering 

contractor, Voltage Engineering Ltd was 

engaged to complete the new cable 

installation works under the supervision 

of Senior Project Manager, A.P. Jayan. 

Experienced in the installation of 

electrical power cables since 1979, 

Voltage Engineering was also familiar 

with the potential for HDD technology 

in circumstances similar to those 

encountered at Ras Laffan. 

Hard Rock Ground Conditions 

A significant problem associated with 

installing this sort of utility service in 

Qatar involves the hard rock ground 

conditions beneath most project sites. 

At Ras Laffan, ground investigations 

revealed hard limestone rock between 

15,000 and 20,000 psi (100 to 140 

MPa), and with the project calling for 

underground conduit installations of both 

200-mm (8-inch) and 100-mm (4-inch) 

diameter class 10 HDPE pipe in nested 

bunches to carry the new 11 kV cables, 

some very specialised drilling equipment 

was required. 

At each of the road crossing sites 

— 12 in all — there was a requirement 

to install a variety of nested conduits. 

In one bore a set of three 200-mm 

(8-inch) diameter pipes was needed 

with, in a second bore, a set of two 

200-mm (8-inch) diameter HDPE pipes 

in conjunction with an additional two 

100-mm (4-inch) diameter HDPE pipes. 

In total seven pipes were to be installed 

at each bore site in two separate bores, 

with the pipes being installed over 

lengths between 48 and 55 meters (158 

and 180 feet). 

Early attempts at completing the 

crossings were inconclusive with one 

bore drilled just 2 metres (7 feet) away 

from one of the ultimately successful 

bores, taking some 20 days to complete 

while installing just one 315-mm (12inch) 

diameter HDPE sleeve over about a 

55 metre (180-foot) length. 

The pilot bore itself took four days to 

complete. Following this bore a different 

drilling technology was sought. 

Voltage Engineering approached 

Vermeer Middle East looking for 

any technology that would improve 

production rates. Vermeer Middle East 

supplied Voltage Engineering with a 

Vermeer® NAVIGATOR® D36x50 Series 

II Model HDD rig, along with support 

equipment that included an MX850 

drilling fluid mixing system and an 

Eclipse Locating System for guiding 

the pilot bores. The key to the ultimate 

success of the project, however, was 

the Vermeer R.A.T.T. rock drilling head 

provided with the drilling system. 

R.A.T.T. Drilling Head 

The R.A.T.T. system offers a variety of 

benefits, including a standard drill rod 

setup without the need for a dual drill 

stem, a bent sub design for increased 

versatility which creates a consistent 

cutting pattern from the bit. This 

optimizes cutting action and helps 

operators achieve efficient operations 

whilst boring. It also utilises a tri-cone 

roller bit that uses off-the-shelf tri-cone 

bits for a variety of designs for different 

conditions; a 4 7/8-inch-cutting diameter 

which allows smaller-diameter product 

pipe to be pulled in without the need for 

hole opening; and a system that utilises 

standard size guidance transmitters 

which means that R.A.T.T. doesn’t 

require use of a ‘mini-probe’ allowing the 

same locating depths to be achieved as 

with a dirt head. 

Using the new R.A.T.T. rock tool, the 

Ras Laffan pilot bores were ultimately 

drilled in about one-tenth of the time it 

had taken with the competitive drilling 

system. The R.A.T.T. system enabled pilot 

bores of about 55 metres (180 feet) to 

be completed in around three and a half 

hours, instead of four days. 

Not only was Vermeer Middle East 

able to offer the right equipment to 

complete the job, it also provided full site 

support. Jay Hicks of Houston, Texas, 

USA, a service manager for Vermeer 

Middle East who’s been involved with 

HDD drilling since 1989, drilled and 

completed the entire 12-bore project in 

just 90 days. 

As well as the pilot bores using the 

R.A.T.T. system, the hard limestone 

ground called for the use of specific 

hole openers capable of cutting through 

this sort of rock. To ensure the nested 

pipes would not be hindered during the 

pipe pull-in phase, the hole opening was 

completed in stages of 200-, 300, 400-, 

and 500-mm (8-, 12-, 15.75-, 20-inch) 

diameter to provide a large enough final 

bore. 

From pilot bore through hole opening, 

the whole drilling operation was supported 

using Baroid Tunnel Gel as the basis of the 

drilling fluid. 

Overall, the cable installation project is 

valued at about 35 million Qatar Riyal (US 

$9.6 million). 

According to A.P. Jayan, senior project 

manager of Voltage Engineering Ltd, “Once 

we had the right equipment on site, there 

were no problems with the installations, 

only solutions. On future projects, with 

the sort of equipment and excellent site 

support we have had, we would be very 

confident if Vermeer Middle East were once 

again on the job site with us.”

VACUUM SYSTEM 

GREEN AND SAFE 

As the leading player in the wastewater 

sector, Zenath has tied up with SEKISUI 

Chemicals Co Ltd Japan, to offer Sivac 

Vacuum Sewer systems. SIVAC vacuum 

sewer system can be applied effectively 

in most areas, with less initial and life 

cycle cost and lower gas emissions that 

can cause global warming compared to 

gravity sewer systems. The Sivac Vacuum 

Sewer System, being a wastewater 

collection system, can be utilised in 

urban, residential, agricultural and 

fishery, housing areas and resorts, and 

recreational areas, where the topography 

is flat and there is high water table and/ 

or soft ground conditions. 

Features of SIVAC vacuum sewer system: 

• SIVAC vacuum sewer system need 

not only less initial costs, but less 

life-cycle costs as well, compared 

to conventional gravity and other 

alternative sewer systems. 

• No wastewater infiltration occurs from 

pipe joints under the ground because 

of usually maintaining negative 

pressure in the sewer lines. 

• The system is used to collect the 

sewage water with air. So, the 

aeration in the pipe line allows 

certain percentage of sewage water 

purification process to happen during 

the collection itself. 

• The time for constructing the works at 

site is very short in comparison with 

conventional gravity sewer system, 

because the trenching required is 

narrow and shallow. 

• Small diameter (75-250mm) 

Polyethylene (PE) pipes, with electrofusion 

(EF) joints, have are applied as 

the better material for the pipelines. 

• The PE pipes used in the system 

are not flexible, and can withstand 

earth-quakes. 

• The waste water can be lifted 

gradually up to 2.5m from the 

starting level without lifting pumps.

SIVAC vacuum stations for driving the 

vacuum and the sewage pumps. 

• Operational troubles and mechanical 

and electrical problems occurring 

in SIVAC vacuum stations can be

IAC WINS EVALUATION 

AND REPAIR CONTRACT 

Saline Water Conversion Corporation 

(SWCC), the government corporation 

operating desalination plants in 

Saudi Arabia, recognised the need 

for a comprehensive evaluation and 

rehabilitation program to reduce potential 

blockages and road collapses in the 

extensive network of sewers at their large 

Al-Khobar City facility in Eastern Province 

of the Kingdom. SWCC floated a tender 

to evaluate and repair the 25 years old 

clay pipe sewer system. 

TECHNOLOGY SELECTION 

International Aramoon Corp (IAC) 

won the tender for assessment and 

rehabilitation of SWCC’s sewer network. 

IAC, a BKP Berolina partner since 2009, 

are specialist trenchless technology 

contractors with over 20 years of 

experience in the field of No-Dig test 

and repair for water and sewer networks 

in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region. 

After initial CCTV camera inspection 

and the submission of a technical 

recommendation by IAC, the CIPP-UV 

from BKP Berolina was adopted as the 

preferred technology for this project. 

LOCAL ISSUES & CONDITIONS 

BKP Berolina Polyester GmbH & 

Co.KG (BKP) produces and delivers 

the Berolina-Liner System, a complete 

solution for manhole to manhole pipeline 

rehabilitation of gravity pipe networks in 

diameters ranging from ND 150 to 1000 

mm. In this industry BKP is a complete 

system supplier which means that 

clients worldwide purchase tailor made 

equipment and required accessories, 

and lining material, and systems 

support. In the purchase agreement, 

training and education of the installation 

personnel is compulsory and can take 

place both in Germany with follow-up 

training in the country where the system 

will be deployed. For approximately a 

week a supervisor will work together with 

the installation crew under the actual site 

conditions. The engineers and operators 

will then receive certificates confirming 

that they are qualified and approved 

installers of the Berolina-Liner system. 

Pipeline rehabilitation, using various 

Trenchless Technology techniques has 

been used in the Middle East for several 

decades and around the globe more 

than 40 years. 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT 

This specific project covers about 6,000 

metre of a clay pipe system in various 

diameters, ranging from DN 200 to 500 

mm. The pipes are located at a depth of 

between 2 to 5 metres below the surface. 

Infiltration was a major problem due to 

open joints and broken pipe sections. 

Due to these conditions, the installed 

Berolina-Liner has been produced in 

various wall thicknesses, designed after 

static calculations were made. The liner 

is able to meet individual challenges 

such as infiltration and ground water 

pressure to fully structural design. 

After training and start up in 

November 2009, the ongoing 

management of the project and daily 

operational work will be carried out by 

IAC. 

One of the many advantages with 

Ultra Violet (UV) Light Curing technology 

is that the lining material produced in 

BKP’s hi-tech production plant in Berlin, 

Germany, can be distributed worldwide, 

using normal containers shipped by sea 

or overland. Storage time of the ready-toinstall 

Berolina-Liner is up to six months 

at room temperature. This makes it 

possible to transport the liners in 20-40 

feet standard sea containers to the final 

destination. 

By using UV light for curing a 

considerable reduction in energy use is 

achieved throughout the supply chain 

- in transport, storage, installation and 

the curing processes, especially when 

compared with normal heat (steam or 

water) cured systems. 

The reduction in overall energy 

consumption also has the favourable 

benefit of significantly reducing CO2 

emissions, which in today’s climate (real, 

economic and political) is of particular 

importance. 

SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME 

To date the project has shown good 

results with very little impact on the 

surrounding environment - a key 

issue of growing importance to utility 

managers and planners like SWCC when 

considering infrastructure upgrades and 

how to minimize disruption to citizens 

and logistics alike. 

The successful use of Berolina-Liner 

System by International Aramoon Corp 

has shown the system can meet the 

challenges, climatically and from an 

environmental perspective, specific to 

rehabilitation projects in Saudi Arabia 

and throughout the Middle East. The 

ease of use of this technology, its cost 

and environmental benefits, and the 

professional expertise of companies like 

IAC in deploying it, will make structural 

pipeline rehabilitation with glass fibre 

reinforced liners cured by UV-light an 

attractive and very viable long term 

solution for the whole Middle East 

market.

Trenchless Middle East Conference being held at the 

prestigious Officers Club and Hotel in Abu Dhabi. We 

are expecting a very constructive exchange between the 

regional municipalties, their utility administrators, their 

contractors and consultants sharing experience and 

new ideas in connection with the many sustainable 

NDRC projects ongoing in the Gulf region. We are 

very fortunate to have the support of the Abu Dhabi 

Sewerage Services Company and the Contractors 

Association. 

As we look forward into 2010 with the world’s 

economies still recoiling from the turmoil of 2009 and 

its aftershocks, it is still early to be predict the future 

with any confidence. However in the trenchless world 

we are familiar with digging deep into our resources and 

in many countries our companies are heavily involved 

in the process of recovery, rebuilding the infrastructure 

from the bottom up. Notwithstanding these reservations 

our industry has demonstrated its health through two 

outstanding ISTT conferences in April 2009 in Toronto 

and September 2009 in Melbourne which each attracted 

record numbers. This pattern has been sustained by 

strong local events in Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo in the 

second half of the year and with our local partners we 

have great expectations for this event in Abu Dhabi. 

The Gulf region has a unique dynamism. Far sighted 

projects like Abu Dhabi’s Strategic Tunnel Enhancement 

Program (STEP) suggest that the traditions of world 

class engineering so evident above ground extend to 

the underground infrastructure too. The region has 

enormous challenges to provide water and wastewater 

treatment, energy and telecommunications in a 

demanding climate. We hope that our programme 

will help to provide food for thought in the fields of 

underground engineering. 

The conference agenda encompasses a broad 

spectrum of technologies, construction products and 

processes particularly relevant to the region. In two 

concentrated conference days, the programme will focus 

on new construction and rehabilitation. Speakers are 

drawn from international specialists and local experts, 

they will share their experience with the audience and 

welcome searching questions. I know that I am going 

to enjoy the exchange, I have been researching new 

developments to share with you in the keynote address
