PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dr. Suan-Seh Foo (Class of 1990)
Ifind it extremely interesting that this
issue of MAA Matters features a story
on medical alumni who are married to
each other. When two individuals are
involved in astonishingly demanding
careers coupled with equally demanding
family lives, creating a successful marriage
or partnership can be a daunting task.
Dr. Bette Stephenson (Class of 1946) and
her husband, Dr. Allan Pengelly (Class of
1951), no doubt faced their fair share of
daunting tasks when they were first married
in the 1940s. It was uncommon for a doctor
to marry another doctor then, never mind
going on to have six children and establish
a successful joint family practice. What is
even more remarkable is that Bette, with
the full support of Allan, went on to become
a respected leader not just in Canadian
health care, but also in politics and in
women’s advocacy. Over the years, she has
been recognized for her many accomplishments.
I was pleased that at the June
Convocation, U of T awarded her an honourary
doctorate degree. A medical scholarship
will also be established in her name.
The outstanding achievement of one
of our alumni is just one reason that the
Medical Alumni Association takes great
pleasure in celebrating at our annual
to visit it regularly to stay informed
of the latest alumni activities.
This year will see us establishing closer
ties and new opportunities with the
Faculty of Medicine, to further enhance
both our alumni and student activities.
I look forward to working with Dean
Whiteside and her excellent staff.
I also look forward in 2008 to again
working with the MAA board of directors,
to our administrator, Ruth Gillings, for
their talents and dedication. Most importantly,
I also thank all of you who support
DEAN’S MESSAGE Dr. Catharine Whiteside (Class of 1975)
Irecently had the pleasure of attending
the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame
ceremony in London, Ontario, and
among the illustrious inductees was the
late Elizabeth Bagshaw. Dr. Bagshaw, who
passed away in 1982 at the age of 101,
entered the medical profession at a time
when, to say the least, women were not
always welcomed with open arms. As
Dr. Suan-Seh Foo, President, MAA; Dr. John Evans, former President, U of T, is in the back row.
Members-at-Large
described during her induction, when
Dr. Bagshaw arrived at the University
of Toronto to register for medical school,
she was told by the men present that there
must be some mistake; she was obviously
in the wrong line, because why would a
woman line up for medicine?
Thanks to the work of pioneers like
Dr. Bagshaw and many others, medical
Dr. Garson Conn (MD 1958)
Dr. Donald Cowan (MD 1956)
Dr. Lori Hasulo (MD 1995)
Dr. Martin Kosoy (MD 1959)
Dr. Peter Wyshynski (MD 1961)
schools are much more accommodating
to women. In fact, more than half our
students are females and the practise of
medicine is richer for their presence and
participation. We have come a long way.
While there is more support for women
in medicine, one area that needs consideration
is increased support for families. As
highlighted in this issue’s article on “medical
marriages,” an increasing number of
students find themselves facing the unique
challenge of marriage/partnership to
another health professional. The demand
of an education in medicine is well established.
Those challenges are compounded
by the obligation to family.
It’s only realistic to remark that as our
profession evolves to provide support for
families, so should the educational environment
that prepares those future health
care professionals. Mentoring, role modelling
and genuine understanding of the
sacrifices of both men and women who
are raising a family during their years as
medical students and postgraduate trainees
is a necessary part of our culture.
Our hope is that when students line
up to register for medical school as Dr.
Bagshaw did so long ago, they will know
that parents and families are welcome, too.
COVER STORY
marriages
Dual doctor
Three couples offer their
prescriptions for success
ON THE TYPICAL MEDICAL MARRIAGE, ICONIC CANADIAN PHYSICIAN
Sir William Osler was quoted as saying, “What about the wife and
babies if you have them? Leave them! Heavy are the responsibilities
to yourself, to the profession and to the public. Your wife will be
glad to bear her share of the sacrifices you make.” With all due
respect to Sir William, today’s dual doctor couples—after wiping
the spit-up from their lab coats—would likely laugh in response.
According to the 2005 National Physician Survey, 19 per cent of
married Canadian physicians have a spouse who is also a physician.
With women now making up about half of all Canadian doctors
under 40, the rate of dual doctor marriages/partnerships is likely to
increase. But with today’s physicians—regardless of sex—looking to
balance the pressures of demanding careers and active family lives, is
it possible to maintain a healthy medical marriage? We spoke to three
alumni couples on achieving a happy relationship.
Drs. May and Gerry Cohen (Class of 1955)
Dr. May Cohen remembers one bleak day in the mid 1950s when
being a doctor married to a doctor wasn’t much fun. She was home
alone with first child Eric, only a week old, and her husband Gerry,
who had his general practice in the basement of their house, was in
hospital suffering from pneumonia. She heard a knock at her door,
and found a patient there asking her to treat him, although she hadn’t
yet even joined the practice—she was still doing a fellowship in
endocrinology. “I can’t remember what was wrong with him, but I
remember that it could have waited!” she laughs.
May did tend to the man and he and his family became long-time
patients of Dr. Gerry and Dr. May, as the two were universally known
in their Toronto neighbourhood where they practised together. May
and Gerry, who married in 1952 and graduated first and second in
4 Univer sity of Toronto • Winter 2007
their class of ’55, made their pioneering medical marriage work by
sharing everything. When patients came to see them, the women in
the families went to May and the men went to Gerry, but their
patients treated them as interchangeable, as they did themselves.
“They saw us as a pair,” says Gerry. “We made decisions together,”
says May. They employed a live-in housekeeper so one or both of
them could dash out at night to deliver a baby or make a house call
but they shared the remaining domestic duties equally. However, May
says, as a woman, she felt more guilt than Gerry did when she had to
be away from their three kids.
After 20 years of general practice, the two were invited to join the
department of family medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton.
For the first time in their married and professional lives, they decided
to pursue separate paths. “But we were always bouncing things off
each other,” Gerry says. The Cohen’s prescription for a great medical
marriage: Respect for each other’s skills and a commitment to family.
Dr. Jeannette Goguen and Dr. Martin Schreiber
(Class of 1987)
Dr. Jeannette Goguen and Dr. Martin Schreiber met in the anatomy
lab in their first year of medical school, graduated together in 1987
and then did internal medicine training together. Now, he’s a nephrologist,
she’s an endocrinologist and both are directors of programs at
the U of T medical school. Jeannette is the director of the post-graduate
program for endocrinology and Martin is the pre-clerkship director
as well as course director for Foundations of Medical Practice.
They have two kids, 13 and 10, and the crazy busy schedule of two
high-powered careers is combined with their 10-year-old son’s double
A baseball schedule and their 13-year-old daughter’s figure skating and
dance. “Life is hectic but fun,” Jeannette says. Both have flexible

“The keys are communication,
planning and openness,” says Martin.
a laugh over med school memories.
schedules and most Sunday nights, the two of them sit down with
their agendas and plan their week so that they each spend as much
time with their kids as possible, juggling their schedules to share early
morning practices and afternoon daycare pick-ups with hospital
rounds, ambulatory clinics, teaching and administrative time.
When their children were young, Jeannette worked part-time and
slid into handling most of the domestic chores. Then when she
decided to return to full-time, the couple engaged in “fairly overt
negotiations,” says Martin, because it was clear that Jeannette couldn’t
continue to do more than half. Now their domestic responsibilities
are just about 50-50, she says.
The huge challenge of juggling two medical careers with family life
is that while they have scheduling flexibility, some days the competing
needs of work and family are impossible to juggle. “If we both have
patients booked and one of our kids gets sick, things become very difficult,”
Martin says. Their prescription for a well-oiled medical marriage:
“The keys are communication, planning and openness,” says
Martin. “You can’t let things fester.”
Dr. Peter Stotland and Dr. Jordana Sacks (Class of 2002)
Dr. Peter Stotland proposed to Dr. Jordana Sacks at their convocation.
He was pretty sure she’d say yes because the two had already done a joint
couples application in their fourth year of U of T medical school and
been accepted—her to family medicine and him to general surgery.
“We’d already given our commitment to each other,” Jordana says.
Now five years later, Jordana has a teaching family practice affiliated
with North York General Hospital and is a member of the U of T
6 Univer sity of Toronto • Winter 2007
The Cohen’s prescription for a great
medical marriage: “Respect for each
other’s skills and a commitment to family.”
“With what limited time we have with
each other and with our kids, we want to
make the most of our time together.”
medical faculty. She is also three months into her maternity leave after
the birth of their second son, Benjamin. Peter completed his five-year
residency in general surgery last year and now works 80-hour weeks in
his first year of a two-year surgical oncology fellowship. Although he
loves what he’s doing, he wishes he didn’t have to spend so much time
away. Jacob, 2-1/2, regularly tells his dad not to go to work. “That’s
awful,” Peter says.
The two realized that because surgical training is so long, there
was no good time to start their family. But they didn’t want to wait,
says Peter. “We just didn’t want to put our lives on hold for that
long,” he says, noting that they both know others in their fields
who did wait and then never did have a family.
While Peter’s hours are a definite strain on their lives, “it would
be much harder for a wife who worked outside of medicine,”
Jordana says. “Peter and I always talk about that–I knew what surgery
training was and how long it would take.”
Their prescription for a solid medical marriage? Know when to
leave medicine outside the home. “The key is to leave work at
work,” says Peter. “With what limited time we have with each other
and with our kids, we want to make the most of our time together.”
And, says Jordana, it’s important that she and the kids do their
own thing and enjoy life even when Peter can’t be home. “I have
lots of family support,” she says. If Peter is doing an overnight
weekend shift, “I go hang out with my sister and her kids.”
Medicine is
opportunities
THE TRUTH IS, FOLKS–NOW THAT WE ARE DOCTORS,
everyone will see us differently–people will see us as being “elite” by
virtue of the work that we have done to earn this degree and the
assumption of responsibility that we will carry out every day at
work. But in return for this, they will give us opportunities that
nobody else has–opportunities to be listened to and to do things
that nobody else gets to do.
And the sooner that we recognize that we have these opportuni-
ties, the sooner it is that we can start using them to do good things
with. We shouldn’t feel the burden of a new responsibility–
instead, we should feel the liberation of a new freedom to do
so many things that others are never given the opportunity to do.
What are you doing right now?
I operate a travel clinic in Toronto, with some
general practice, and I do research on a new
3-D real-time brain imaging modality.
What did you do right after
leaving medical school?
I worked in Toronto in general practice and
in 1983 I started an international aid and
relief organization called Canadian Physicians
for Aid and Relief (CPAR), www.cpar.ca.
Where did your career take you?
I remained in general practice. I have had an
interest in mental health and neuroscience.
I travelled to Malawi, Ethiopia, Kenya and
Uganda on a number of relief and development
projects.
It’s the time-honoured tradition
that unites nearly a century of
U of T medical grads, staff and
students in the Faculty of
Dr. Mark Doidge (Class of 1982)
was asked to complete a short biography
for his class reunion. Here is a
snapshot of an interesting life—so far.
Tell us about your family.
I have been married since 1982 to Viki
Doidge, and we have a 21-year-old daughter
named Dana who graduated from York. My
All alumni are invited to Daffydil 2008.
Last year’s performance alone
raised an outstanding $35,500!
Starting as a collection of
sketch comedy pieces, Daffydil
has evolved into a theatrical
production featuring singing,
dancing, acting and live music.
With productions such as
“Admission Impossible” and
“Varicella, Once Upon a Virus,”
we are sure many of you
have fond and funny
memories of now staidand-stately
colleagues kicking
up their dancing heels,
and exercising their vocal
cords and acting chops. It
was a unique opportunity
for students then—and
now—to express their creative
talents while simultaneously
making a significant contribution
to the advancement of
cancer care and research.
Each year the show attracts
other daughter, Ashley, 19, is in second year
at York in psychology.
What do you do outside of medicine?
I am writing a dictionary about the psychology
of good and evil. I play a little chess and travel
with my family.
What is your favourite place in the world?
The Canadian Rockies.
What are you most proud of?
Starting CPAR; first conceptualizing and helping
launch the North Network (www.northnetwork.ca),
which was developed by Dr. Ed
Brown. It allows health care providers to deliver
services and transmit health information
via videoconferencing in 360 sites throughout
Ontario; and developing, with Dr. Joseph
Mocanu, a new method of real-time imaging
Your MAA donation makes a BIG difference
Dear Medical Alumni Association and the
Ontario Medical Foundation:
The cost of studying medicine while
living in downtown Toronto has created
an extremely tough financial burden
for me for the past few months. Additionally, I
have found myself working in odd jobs recently
just so I can financially support my own education
as well as my family. With the support of
this bursary program, I can put my financial
troubles at ease, and enjoy and focus more on
my medical education….
