Originally,Cosmicar was a subsidiary of Asahi Optical before becoming a subsidiary of PENTAX.since then our worldwide sales of CCTV lenses have made us a market leader underthe Cosmicar and later Cosmicar/Pentax brands.In 2002 the Cosmicar name was discontinued and we focused on the recognitionand strength of the PENTAX brand. Last year our name changed to PENTAX SecuritySystems Division in line with international branding.In 2008 PENTAX merged with Hoya Corporation – a strong and well established Japanesecompany involved in similar industries which are complimentary to ours, includingglass manufacturing. This is how PENTAXaspherical lenses are able to make cameras work in lower light conditions than standard lenses. For colour cameras this is aparticular advantage as they can struggle in lower light conditions and so need all the light available. The picture will then haveless interference (noise), it will have better colour reproduction and will help the camera produce a better video signal. Whenused with high sensitivity mono cameras many applications won’t require any form of man made lighting and can cope with onlythe most limited natural light. This ishow PENTAX aspherical lenses are able to make cameras work in lower light conditions than standard lenses. Forcolour cameras this is a particular advantage as they can struggle in lower light conditions and so need all the lightavailable. The picture will then have less interference (noise), it will have better colour reproduction and will helpthe camera produce a better video signal. When used with high sensitivity mono cameras many applications won’trequire any form of man made lighting and can cope with only the most limited natural light. Also, the more lighttransmitted by the lens can only mean better image sharpness and less distortion at the edges of the picture.Back focal distanceIn CCTV we use two different standardised measures of lens mounting, C-Mount which has a back focal length of17.526mm and CS-Mount which has 12.5mm. Resolution (modulation transfer function)With the help of a test chart with graduating resolution lines you can measure the quality of the optics. You willsee that the image produced will become poorer the closer to the edges you get. This is the nature of both thelens and the CCD within the camera as the highest optical performance of a lens and CCD is in the middle.Image quality can also help significantly with the picture contrast as a higher quality lens and CCD have betterfocus between dark and bright areas of the image.Angle of viewThe angle of view is the area shown on screen. The angle is determined by the lenses focal length and thecorresponding CCD.ApertureThe aperture is the reduction in light through the lens caused by the many mechanics and pieces of glassnecessary to focus the image. By adjusting the cameras shutter speed you can adjust the brightness of thepicture electronically. It is sometimes necessary to adjust the aperture and/or the shutter speed in order tocapture the relevant target. The size of the aperture (K) is calculated by taking the focal length ratio (F) anddividing it by the diameter of the iris opening (D).k= f DAperture values are international standards. The aperture levels change at a factor of 2 . On the below chart,from one aperture rating to the next, the amount of light doubles or halves, depending on which direction youare going. BacklightBacklight refers to bright areas of light that are behind the area or object being viewed. This can cause problemsby making the area or object in the foreground appear darker.GhostingGhosting is when a second or reflection of the original image appears in the picture.There are a couple of causes of ghosting. One can be poor quality lenses picking up reflections, but in most instancesit is caused by faults within the cabling such as incorrect termination or a shorted coax.High-resolutionLenses are determined to be of high resolution if they can display a larger number of line pairs per millimetre athigher contrast (measured against the current standard) than a standard lens (see also: resolution MTF). Highresolutionlenses reproduce images more accurately than a standard lenses. In particular, even with low levels ofillumination you can still generate high-contrast images.Infrared (IR) coated lensesWhen using cameras with extremely high IR sensitivity, the picture often includes flare and appears washed out,due to the CCD sensors sensitivity to a large range of different wave lengths. IR-coated lenses correct the situationby increasing the transmission of light between the wavelengths 700 and 900nm.Conventional lenses are optimised for a wave length of about 550nm. At these wave lengths, the standard CCDchip is highly sensitive. Wavelengths below 450nm and above 650nm (where the sensitivity of a lens steeply declines)will be largely ignored in producing the final picture.IR-coated lenses are coated to increase transmission of light in the working range of about 850nm. This way, thecharacteristic curve of the infrared camera will be perfectly supported and will generate its picture mainly of theinfrared light contained in daylight and by night with the addition of IR illumination.Infrared cut filterAn IR cut filter cuts out IR (700nm+) light but allows visible white light to pass to the cameras CCD.Many of our lenses come with an IR cut spot filter. This is a very small area at the very centre of the lens whichonly works when the iris closes right down in bright light. Often UV filters are used to protect the valuablefront optic of a lens.%Transmissions curve for UV filternmVari Focal LensVari Focal lenses allow infinite variations of focal length within a set range and therefore change the angle of viewdisplayed on the monitor. In general, vari focal lenses have a much smaller range of focal length than zoom lenses,but have much wider angles of view. For nebular reflections, low-contrast images (e.g. people in the shade) can no longer be displayed due to theloss of contrast. This decrease in contrast and the appearance of light spots in the picture greatly influence thereliability of video sensors which finally produce false alarms or cannot reliably detect people on the picture whoare dressed in a similar way. For CCD sensors, single clear reflexes lead to phantom images which can pass overthe whole picture. Punctual overloading will lead to the typical „smear“ effect on the CCD sensor. Another veryimportant item is the abrasion resistance of the coating. After each cleaning of the lens surface, the coating shouldneither be rubbed off, nor should it’s thickness be changed. Only extensive pre-treatment of the glass surfacesguarantees a long service life of the razor thin coating.DistortionIt is one of the properties of lenses to produce more distortion towards the image border. Straight lines close tothe image border are bent outwards or inwards (distorted). It is called barrel distortion when the lines are bowedoutwards and pin cushion distortion when the lines are bowed inwards (see figures below). What is Infra Red Light?Colour or Monochrome Cameras?The first question in planning a CCTV installation for day and night monitoring is whether or not you prefer colouror monochrome pictures. In most cases, end users would like colour images over b/w images. If this is the case,you also need to consider colour-correcting illumination so that the image is displayed in true colours. For example:lots of installers have to use yellow low-pressure sodium street lighting. Near IR-light is light, which is at a slightly longer wave length than visible light inthe spectral range from 700 to 1100nm, just beyond the visible spectrum. This near IR-light is used for CCTVpurposes.Since IR-light does not include any colours which are visible to the human eye, it cannot be used for colour pictures.In order to see the IR-light you need monochrome or day/night cameras. Beam PatternsWhen planning CCTV illumination, the beam angle should always be adapted to cover the full field of vision of thecamera. The correct angle of the illumination must be used to fully illuminate the scene. Modern Adaptive Illuminationunits allow the angle of the illumination to be adjusted on site to suit the specific requirements.Technical Tip:The beam angle of the illumination should always be adapted to the field of vision of the camera. The only practicalway to achieve this is through Adaptive Illumination.LightFieldofviewFieldofviewLightIf the beam angle is too narrow, it willresult in ’white out’ or glare in the middleof the picture. Therefore, the picture willnot being correctly illuminated.If the beam angle is too broad, the resultwill be a waste of energy and reduce thedistance of illumination.Traditional beam patternsAs standard, beam patterns from an illuminator are provided at a fixed angle, either narrow or wide. Historically,spot and flood lenses have dominated but more recently these have been rejected in favour of more precise anglessuch as 10, 30 or 60 degrees. However, these are still fixed angle output, meaning they are inflexible on site.If the lighting requirements change or if the cameras field of view is changed the lighting may be unacceptable.Also, it means that all lighting decisions must be made prior to installation which is often difficult. Often final lensdecisions and viewing areas are made during the installation process.Adaptive Illumination beam patternsMany installations use vari-focal lenses and ideally the installer requires the same level of flexibility with lighting tomaximise system performance. Adaptive Illumination (AI) products do not provide light at a fixed output angle,rather they provide a range of output angles allowing the installer to select the angle that covers the exact field ofview and provides the highest quality images.
