Walker: Revival <strong>and</strong> Re<strong>in</strong>vention <strong>in</strong> India’s <strong>Kathak</strong> Dance173ongo<strong>in</strong>g particularly <strong>in</strong> bharatanatyam (Meduri 2008; O’Shea 2007) <strong>and</strong> odissi(Lopez y Royo 2007). <strong>Kathak</strong>, the classical <strong>dance</strong> <strong>of</strong> North India <strong>and</strong> my particularfield <strong>of</strong> expertise, however, not only provides a useful <strong>and</strong> illustrativeexample <strong>of</strong> how perform<strong>in</strong>g arts <strong>and</strong> particularly <strong>dance</strong> were affected by the<strong>revival</strong>, but also <strong>of</strong>fers some uniquely non-Western perspectives on questions<strong>of</strong> authenticity, hybridity, <strong>and</strong> cultural change.Plac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Kathak</strong> Dance <strong>in</strong> the Indian Revival<strong>Kathak</strong> today is a virtuosic stage <strong>dance</strong> performed by tra<strong>in</strong>ed artists as a pr<strong>of</strong>essionalproduction for an audience. Characteristic kathak <strong>dance</strong> vocabulary <strong>in</strong>cludesrhythmic footwork,which is <strong>of</strong>ten improvised<strong>and</strong> enhanced by ankle bellscalled ghunguru, <strong>and</strong> dizzy<strong>in</strong>gsequences <strong>of</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>s calledchakkars. This energetic sideis contrasted by flow<strong>in</strong>g,sensual gestures used predom<strong>in</strong>antly<strong>in</strong> expressive ornarrative <strong>dance</strong>s <strong>and</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>edfor the most part <strong>in</strong>the arms, h<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> upperbody. <strong>Kathak</strong> <strong>dance</strong>rs’ gestures<strong>and</strong> facial expressionsare subtle <strong>and</strong> contrast withthe more exaggerated, theatricalmovements <strong>of</strong> otherIndian <strong>dance</strong>s.
