Celebrating Accomplishments
In this issue of
Tallgrass we debut
an enhancement
to our membership
program to include
addition levels of
giving for
individuals and
businesses in the
Flint Hills region.
Rest assured that we have retained the
popular annual pass program while
making members aware that they have
new giving opportunities based on their
desire to provide increased financial
support to the Discovery Center.
Summer is a busy time for all of us
especially at the FHDC. New exhibits,
day camps and Go See It! lectures all
combine to attract our members and
guests. This issue of Tallgrass is full of
relevant information on current and
future happenings at the FHDC.
Education staff have expanded our
program offerings to include evening
programs off site so make plans to
attend them. The use of new iPads
makes several of the day camps and
classes even more meaningful as
technology is used to extend the
educational and interpretive experience
inside or out of the facility.
This will be the first year that we
partner with Sunset Zoo in celebrating
Wildcat Week August 30 through
September 5. KSU faculty, staff and
students will receive $6.00 admission to
the FDHC when they show their KSU ID.
I am also pleased to share that a
sequel to the fall of 2013’s Through
Artist’s Eyes exhibition titled Flint Hills
Masters will be exhibited this fall and
winter in the Tallgrass gallery. A unique
partnership with the Strecker-Nelson
gallery of Manhattan, as in the case of
the previous exhibit, has made this
possible once again. In this year’s
exhibition there are two changes from
the last showing. The entire exhibition
will change out at the half way point of
the 14 week show and all art within the
gallery will be available for purchase with
a portion of the proceeds being donated
to the FHDC.
Something new in the show that we
believe will generate more appreciation
for the Flint Hills is an exhibit from a
younger perspective. Featured as part of
the Flint Hills Masters is the inclusion of a
student art show with young artist’s
grades kindergarten through 12th grade
providing us with their interpretation of
the Flint Hills. There is no better way to
see the Flint Hills than from a young
person’s view.
Coming Soon
Fall exhibition, Flint Hills Masters opens in October
Artists’ work from around the world
will be on display on Saturday,
October 3 through January 17.
Strecker-Nelson Gallery of Manhattan
and the Flint Hills Discovery Center have
partnered to present this unique fall
exhibition in the Tallgrass Gallery.
“I am most excited about the diversity
of vision in the show,” said Jay Nelson,
Gallery owner. “Each artist has entered
works that are typical of their most
desirable subject matter, be that Matthew
Richter’s native plants or James Borger’s
still lifes on the prairie.”
All art in the exhibition will be available
to purchase with a portion of the proceeds
donated to FHDC. Flint Hills Masters will
change out at the half way point of the 14
week show.
“Art of and about the Flint Hills is
instrumental in raising awareness of the
beauty all around us in the tallgrass
prairie,” said Nelson. “As people we
preserve and treasure those places we find
beautiful, so the Flint Hills exhibits of art are
a way to help save our local environment.”
The members’ only preview is Friday,
October 2, 5:30-7 p.m. All members must
RSVP, by emailing membership.fhdc@
cityofmhk.com or call 785.587.2726 to
reserve a spot. The exhibit will open to the
public on Saturday, October 3 from 10
Celebrate the Cowboy
Flint Hills Discovery Center holds second annual National Day of the Cowboy
M
ore than 500 visitors and
members gathered on Saturday,
July 25 to celebrate the cowboy
at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. This
is the second year the event has taken
place. From buckboard rides and barrel
racing to rodeo clowns and queens,
there was something for everyone. Those
in attendance could learn all about the
origin of the Buffalo Solider as well as
test their own cattle call.
A huge thank you to our partners and
sponsors for the success of this event.
“The support of our donors allows us
to offer an array of activities for visitors
to enjoy that day,” said Susan Adams,
Volunteer/Visitor Services Manager.
“From the financial donations, to wood,
leather and of course each person’s
volunteer time, we couldn’t make events
like this a great success without our
sponsors and donors continued
support.”
Volunteering
High school students serving FHDC
Chloe Dorst, Eli Miller and Kendra
Geisbrecht have something in
common. All three high school
students volunteer at the Flint Hills
Discovery Center to fulfill service
requirements for various programs.
They are outstanding students who have
become outstanding ambassadors for the
FHDC.
Who are the student volunteers
at FHDC?
Dorst, a junior at Manhattan High
School (MHS), has been working as an
FHDC volunteer since January of this year.
Her contribution of hours will meet one
of the requirements of the Distinguished
Service Graduate Program she
participates in at MHS and will lend
support to her college applications to
study chemical engineering. She is also
interested in theater and has worked in
productions at the Manhattan Arts Center
in Manhattan.
Miller, a Rock Creek High School
Junior, is on the debate team and plans
to pursue a major in debate forensics
after high school. He visited the Discovery
Center and liked the programs offered,
especially the excitement around some of
the new events taking place. He enjoys
the variety of volunteer duties from
working a reception booked as an event
rental to participating in Stepping Into the
Prairie activities with the little kids.
Geisbrecht, a sophomore at
Manhattan High School, is originally from
Baltimore, Maryland and moved to
Manhattan from Lee’ Summit, MO.
She plays soccer for MHS and her favorite
subject is Spanish. Geisbrecht gets a
good feeling about volunteering at FHDC
when she can offer a little encouragement
that results in a child becoming excited
about completing a project. She plans to
major in interior architecture at K-State.
What is their advice to other
high school students interested
in volunteering at FHDC?
Dorst’s best advice is to enjoy yourself.
“I can always count on the kids’ energy to
give me a little energy boost,” said Dorst.
The other two students had advice also.
“Be prepared to call upon every craft
you know,” said Geisbrecht. “Never
underestimate the distraction of the train
in the Riding the Rails exhibit.”
Volunteers interact with visitors on a
regular basis. “Take everything in stride
and enjoy the different groups of visitors
that come to the Discovery Center,” said
Miller.
Student volunteers attend the same
FHDC volunteer training sessions as adult
volunteers and in addition to earning
service hours which can be applied to
school or service requirements, they
provide a valuable service to the Flint Hills
Discovery Center as a member of the
volunteer program. For information about
volunteering, visit www.flinthillsdiscovery.
org/volunteer.
High schoolers are a big asset to the volunteering community at FHDC. From left to right: Chloe Dorst,
Primitive Skills Workshops
Spend a day in the Flint Hills with
veteran instructor, Daniel
Schapaugh, developing cross
cultural skills related to daily living and
survival that were employed by ancestral
peoples. This course raises participants’
awareness of historically accurate
methods, true human needs, and
interactions with natural resources found
in the Flint Hills that sustain those needs.
Schapaugh, an Education
Specialist at the Flint Hills Discovery
Center, has taught a variety of outdoor
skills workshops and credit courses
through K-State, Kansas Department of
Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, Boy Scouts
of America and UFM Community
Learning Center.
“The workshop will provide
participants ample one-on-one
instruction and practice that greatly
enhances the learning process,” said
Schapaugh. “Being a part of a process
where people reconnect with ancestral
skills is a unique and intense
experience.”
FHDC Foundation
Meeting goals
Since its inception in 2012, the FHDC
Foundation has partnered with the
Flint Hills Discovery Center to seek
donors interested in naming
opportunities for a portion of the
Discovery Center and provide financial
gifts or endowment support.
It’s Official
The Horizon Ranch Flint Hills
Immersive Experience Theater was officially
named on May 30, 2015 in honor of a
$750,000 gift from Marty Vanier and Bob
Krause. The dedication ceremony held
for Marty and Bob’s family and friends,
revealed the theater’s new name during
the evening’s Celebration of Giving. Marty
and Bob were the first to support a naming
opportunity and establish an endowment
fund for the Flint Hills Discovery Center with
their gift.
Bruce Snead, President of the Flint Hills
Discovery Center Foundation and emcee
for the dedication ceremony said, “Marty
and Bob’s gift represents philanthropic
validation not only of the community's
investment in creating the FHDC, but also
recognition of the impact the Flint Hills has
had on all our lives,” He went on to thank
Marty and Bob, “for your support of the
Foundation as stewards of the funds dedicated
to sustain the Horizon Ranch Flint
Hills Immersive Experience Theater, and to
help us leverage the example of your
exceptional gift for additional
benefactors.”
A Gift of Technology
Thanks to generous donations from
early supporters of the Flint Hills Discovery
Veteran’s Day
Wednesday, November 11
10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Free for all military personnel,
including retirees, veterans, immediate
family and gold star families. ID required.
Center Foundation, the FHDC education
team recently purchased fifteen iPad Air
tablet computers. This is part of a new
STEM initiative by the Flint Hills Discovery
Center to help drive student interest in the
fields of Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics.
The iPads will be a tool to help our
young visitors connect with the nature,
history, and culture of the Flint Hills. They
can photograph wildflowers to create
digital collages, take a historical walking
tour with 100 year old photos at their
fingertips, and design their own ecosystems
with plants, animals, and everything in
between. While technology can never
replace the awe-inspiring views of the
rolling Flint Hills, it may just give the next
generation the tools they need to map,
research, study, celebrate, and preserve
those very same hills.
The Flint Hills Discovery Center
Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization, serves as an active local,
regional and national advocate for the
Flint Hills Discovery Center by creating
opportunities for donors to give to the
Foundation in support of FHDC programs,
initiatives and financial success.
For information about naming
opportunities or how you can make a
donation, contact us at 785-587-2729,
