<strong>JM</strong>AC TMJohnson Matthey <strong>Antimicrobial</strong> CompositeThe antimicrobial activity of silver has been known very long time.To take advantage of very powerful antimicrobial effect of the silver ion whilst keeping its reactivity under control, it is necessary toarrange <strong>for</strong> a method of „controlled release“ of silver ions, so that they are effectively released „on demand“. This is achieved bypreparing a structure known as a composite, of silver chloride and titanium dioxide – <strong>JM</strong>AC TM• The system works because an electron exchange occurs between the twocomponents, and this allows a slight degree of solubility of the silver ionsonce the composite is put into water. When this occurs, (see fig.) an ionicequilibrium is set up such that in deionised water some 20 to 40 parts perbillion of silver goes into solution, with all the rest of the silver stayingbound up in the composite. This equilibrium will remain in place indefinitely,until something occurs to remove silver ions from solution, whereuponfuther silver ions will be released from the composite to top up theequilibrium.• The <strong>JM</strong>AC TM range of biocides provides a release of silver ions ondemand. Study results• The study shows a significant deposition of silver on the hair tresses• The deposition increases with increasing number of washings• MIC values <strong>for</strong> <strong>JM</strong> <strong>ActiCare</strong> TM :– Pseudomonas aeroginosa 8 ppm– Staphylococcus aureus 20 ppm– Candida albicans 500 ppm– Aspergillus brasiliensis 500 ppm• Based on the study results and taking the antimicrobial activity of <strong>JM</strong> <strong>ActiCare</strong> intoconsideration efficacy against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria on hair (keratin) isexpected• As the deposition is superficial, that means the local concentration on the hair surface ishigher than average, activity against yeast & mould is expected as well<strong>JM</strong>AC <strong>for</strong> <strong>Antimicrobial</strong> <strong>Formulations</strong>Peter Klug, Sonja Gehm BU Industrial & Consumer Specialties, Personal Care (Copyright Clariant.
