he 71 Characteristics are just that – how<br />
the software itself manifests utility. These<br />
are not types of software, but what is going<br />
on inside much of the software available. Of<br />
course, all digital curriculum and content is<br />
assumed to also have actual instructional<br />
value, something to learn, a lesson, a bit,<br />
chunk or wide amount of knowledge. That’s<br />
the “given” in the entire list.<br />
The Learning Counsel has placed these 71<br />
definitions of digital curriculum into six<br />
major categories for better understanding<br />
and differentiation.<br />
1. Actions:<br />
Functions of the code that do things,<br />
generally singularly and discretely with<br />
out involvement with other processes.<br />
2. Aesthetics:<br />
Design or dressing or engagementoriented<br />
elements.<br />
3. Controls:<br />
Administrative capabilities or reporting.<br />
4. Individualizations:<br />
Means of making unique, keeping in<br />
mind that “individualization” is some<br />
thing you do for someone else, and<br />
“personalization” when it is something<br />
one does for oneself.<br />
5. Instructs:<br />
Lesson-giving qualities.<br />
6. Mechanisms:<br />
Processes or techniques, generally<br />
longer than actions.<br />
