THE STORY
Over the course of 20 years working in the
maritime industry Cornelius Bockermann
witnessed first hand how humans adversely affect
our environment. He knew something had to
change.
In 2013, he moved with his family to Cairns and
shipped all their possessions from Germany to
their new home in Australia. Through the process
of shipping his own goods he experienced the
disconnect between commerce and environmental
preservation. Upon learning of plans to expand
fossil fuel based shipping along the Queensland
coast and amongst the Great Barrier Reef he knew
he had to act.
The question became how do you offer businesses
and consumers a sustainable option in shipping?
Cargo under sail is the answer and the Dutch
Schooner named the Avontuur is the vessel to do
it.
We are a passionate collective of individuals, led
by Captain Cornelius, working to create a supply
chain that merges the relationship between
commerce and preservation.
We are restless and can no longer wait for others
to make a change. We need you as a shareholder
Why are we
doing this?
Because it is time to act!
The 90,000 plus container
ships are destroying our
oceans and spewing toxins
into our atmosphere.
In order for this global
dependency to change we
believe there must be a
collaborative and viable
alternative solution.
OUR OPPORTUNITY
Sailing cargo
The current method of sea
transport is fundamentally
unsustainable and we need to
change it.
We have the ship, we have the
people with extensive industry
experience but more importantly we
have the passion to put cargo under
sail and reform today’s shipping
practices.
Change in the South Pacific awaits!
What will we
offer?
We offer consumers,
honest producers and
ethical investors the
opportunity to be part of
the inevitable change in
sea shipping.
Whether an adventure
seeker or a sailing
enthusiast our trainee
program is a worldly
endeavour that thrills.
WE OFFER
Sailing Cargo
We are going to link fairtrade and
organic producers with conscientious
consumers by sailing cargo. In
addition we will be able to fill the void
in inter-island Pacific trade.
Merchant Sail Training
We follow our mandate to preserve
through action and teach sailing skills
en route to delivering goods by wind.
Ethical transactions
We merge the relationship between
commerce and preservation through
meaningful business relationships
and improving the livelihood of our
employees, trainees and trading
partners.
“Sea transport is an absolute necessity for most
Oceanic communities...all current services are
fossil fuel based and increasingly unaffordable and
unsustainable.
The Pacific region is the most dependent on imported
fossil fuels in the world with Pacific Island Countries
importing more than 95% of their needs. Such
dependency is recognised as having a crippling effect
on national budgets and revenues and impacts on key
productive sectors in the region.”
OUR SHIP
The Avontuur is a two masted gaff rigged
schooner which was built in 1920 by Otto
Smidt in Stadskanaal, Netherlands. Until 2005
she was used as a sailing cargo vessel, most
recently by Dutch Captain Paul Wahlen. He
sailed cargo between the North Sea, Baltic,
North Atlantic and across to Caribbean ports
where she was widely regarded as one of the
last true cargo sailing ships of the twentieth
century.
After years serving as a day passenger ship
along the Dutch coast and West Friesian
islands the Avontuur became the foundation of
the Timbercoast community in autumn 2014.
