natural stone paving available 

on the market, easily viewed at 

our showrooms in Kent, Essex

art machinery and skilled 

stonemasons in action. 

With large stocks of stone held 

at the depot, we can usually deliver 

to your site within just a couple of 

days of your order, while the leadin 

time for bespoke stonework 

is generally four to five weeks. 

Delivery is a vital part of our 

service and all stone is carefully 

packaged to ensure you receive it 

as it leaves us – perfectly finished 

and in excellent condition. 

It’s not just the quality of our 

stone that’s important. With stone 

sourced from quarries in Britain, 

Europe and Asia, we recognise 

that we bear a huge responsibility 

in terms of operating an ethical 

supply chain. To that end, London 

Stone – alongside the European 

stone companies Beltrami and 

Stoneasy – are supporting a 

ground-breaking project in India, 

working to create Child Labour 

Free Zones. Behind the project 

are a collective of NGOs – 

Manjari, India Committee of the 

Netherlands (ICN) and Stop Child 

Labour – and we are excited about 

the progress already being made.

Each showroom is staffed by a 

dedicated, highly trained and 

experienced team. We’ve picked 

all our showroom managers and 

sales advisors for their experience

or because they’ve come to us 

after a lot of time in the industry.

OPERATION STONE 

Dedicated Op’s team delivering the good 

We know that our stone is 

only as good as the condition it 

arrives in. That’s why we pay as 

much attention to the quality of 

our delivery service as we do to 

the stone itself. Already, all of our 

deliveries within London and the 

Home Counties are made in our 

own vehicles, giving us complete 

control over the process. 

Our modern transport fleet 

is made up of six hiab trucks, 

allowing convenient crane offload 

on site, and two transit vans for 

sites with narrow or restricted 

access. Our entire fleet is less 

than four years old, meaning that 

all vehicles are low emissions and 

carbon efficient, as well as being 

reliable and less likely to suffer 

breakdowns leading to delays and 

time off the road. 

In 2016, we are also improving 

our communication with clients 

to keep you even better informed 

on the day your order is due to 

arrive. In the past, we’ve sent our 

customers a text message the 

evening before delivery to let them 

know whether to expect us in the 

morning or the afternoon. This 

year, we will also be sending a 

text message as your driver leaves 

his previous job, so you’ll have a 

much more accurate picture of the 

time of delivery, giving you more 

flexibility in your working day. 

Drivers are carefully selected for 

their skill and professionalism, 

with each member of the fleet staff 

undergoing Customer Service 

training to reach the same high 

standards that you expect from 

everybody at London Stone.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER 

Sam Diment, owner of HCL, talks about the importance of ensuring that 

clients are educated and informed when choosing materials for their 

garden, and how suppliers can help. 

At HCL, we specialise in building and maintaining 

gardens to the very highest standards. We work with 

some of the country’s top designers, who choose us 

for our eye for detail and experience in sourcing the 

best quality materials for every project. Together with 

London Stone, we help to advise prospective clients 

and designers on selecting a natural stone product 

that will work in their unique environment to enhance 

the look and feel of the finished garden. 

We want to ensure that we have happy clients, 

not just on the day that the project is completed, 

but for many years to come. This means educating 

our customers and managing their expectations so 

that they understand fully the properties of the stone 

they have chosen, and its ongoing maintenance 

requirements. It is fair to say that not every 

type of stone on the market is suitable for every 

situation, and some may require significantly more 

maintenance than others. Different plots present 

different challenges, and these external factors will 

need to be taken into consideration when selecting a 

natural stone material. For example, does the garden 

have a lot of overhanging trees? These may produce 

berries or encourage bird droppings, both of which 

could stain a light-coloured, un-sealed stone. Each 

client is also unique, and the needs of a family with 

small children and pets are likely to be very different 

from the needs of a young couple living in the city. 

We are firm believers that these requirements and 

considerations should all be discussed in detail at 

concept stage, along with any ongoing maintenance 

requirements, so that they can be budgeted into 

the overall spend. We want the client to be able to 

make their choice with confidence, fully informed 

and after detailed discussions with their designer or 

contractor. 

This is where our designers and project 

managers have learnt to lean on London Stone’s 

expertise. We are always able to get impartial 

advice on whether a particular product is suitable 

for the intended setting, and London Stone also 

provide crucial advice about sealing and cleaning 

requirements, allowing us to present detailed and 

accurate information to our clients. For example, 

when we are selecting a stone for a front driveway 

or ‘heavy wear’ area, we need honest and clear 

advice about whether our suggested stone is likely 

to mark when car tyres drive on it. In our experience, 

London Stone provide the best advice and expertise 

available on the market.

CHILD LABOUR FREE ZONES 

Supporting communities in our supply chains 

With so much of our stone 

being sourced from India, we bear 

a big responsibility in ensuring that 

working conditions at the quarries 

are safe and fair. We are part of a 

much wider industry and so this 

responsibility extends beyond just 

the quarries that we use, and into 

the whole sandstone producing 

region. Cobble producing areas are 

notoriously vulnerable to the use 

of child labour, due to the nature 

of the work being undertaken, and 

it is here that our first project is 

focussing. 

As part of London Stone’s 

commitment to ensuring that 

no child is harmed by the stone 

that we import, we’ve joined 

Belgian stone importer Beltrami 

in working on a project that aims 

to completely eradicate child 

labour in the area of Budhpara, the 

village where the majority of Indian 

sandstone setts are produced. 

The challenge is to persuade 

all parties involved that children 

should be in school; no ifs, buts 

or maybes. As well as London 

Stone and Beltrami, the project 

involves Indian NGOs Manjari and 

ARAVALI, and the India Committee 

of the Netherlands; together, we’re 

working with local community 

leaders, schools, cobble traders 

and labour contractors who often 

have a rather different view of 

the situation. The situation is not 

straight-forward. Children are sent 

to work for a range of reasons; 

because their families need the 

money, because schooling and 

childcare are unavailable, and 

sometimes because they are born 

into a family of bonded labourers 

who are working to pay off a neverending 

debt. All of these issues will 

be addressed during the course of 

the project.

Steven Walley recently visited 

Budhpura. “Some of the people 

involved are nothing short of 

inspirational,” he says. “One 

eighteen-year-old closed his family 

shop down for three months so he 

could go door to door in the local 

village, talking to parents about the 

importance of giving their children 

an education.” 

Open dialogue is vital to 

the success of this project. If 

a solution is to be found and 

change to be brought, then it’s 

essential that everybody involved 

is heard, understood and helped. 

Everybody who will be affected by 

the changes has their own unique 

fears and needs, and we must 

provide support along the way. 

Getting involved in small, 

more hands-on projects like this 

one means that, not only can we 

make – and witness for ourselves 

– a real difference in the lives of 

people who are part of our supply 

chain, but that we can get involved 

directly with our suppliers and 

persuade them to throw their 

weight behind the three-year 

project. We know that many of 

you are as concerned as we are 

about the ethical credentials of 

the stone that’s imported. So, to 

keep everyone informed of what’s 

happening, we’ve set up a website 

with Beltrami where we’ll be 

posting articles explaining, not only 

the challenges, but the positive 

action taking place at Budhpura.

Greenfingers 

Greenfingers builds gardens for 

children’s hospices, working 

closely with each to ensure the

gardens offer a place for children 

and their families to socialise 

and play, and for therapy and 

reflection. They give parents and 

siblings the chance to be together 

away from the bedside and the 

medical environment. Greenfingers 

has already built and supports 

forty-nine hospice gardens, but 

many more are needed.

Perennial is the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping people who work 

in, or are retired from horticulture when times get tough. Started in 1839, 

when custodians of Britain’s great estates and landowners came together 

to start pensions for their sick, injured and elderly gardeners. Fast 

forward 177 years: they now provide free and confidential advice, support 

and financial assistance to people of all ages who work in any area of the 

trade. From gardeners to landscapers, growers to green keepers; their 

nationwide team of professional, highly trained Caseworkers and Debt 

Advice Specialists work tirelessly to get the UK’s horticulturists back on

Award winning social enterprise 

Streetscape is an awardwinning 

social enterprise providing 

long-term unemployed 18-25 yearolds 

with paid apprenticeships 

in landscape gardening. We’ve 

known Streetscape for five years, 

supplying stone at a discount 

for their projects, and are proud 

to support them and the young 

people they work with. 

Over the course of a year, the 

apprentices learn hard and soft 

landscaping skills and work onsite 

for residential, corporate and 

commercial clients, all the while 

working towards a Level 2 Diploma 

in Work-Based Horticulture. They 

also have the chance to complete 

a short course or horticultural 

licence of their choice, and to learn 

to drive, all supported financially 

by Streetscape. The goal is to 

ensure that every young person 

moves on to work—and retains it— 

when their training is over. 

With our two organisations 

sharing the same people-focussed 

values, we love Streetscape’s 

guiding principles: that every 

project should be completed to 

an excellent standard; that being 

in work creates a sense of selfworth 

and purpose; and that 

everyone has the potential to 

fulfil their dreams, given the right 

opportunity. They provide garden 

design, build and maintenance 

services mainly to the south-east 

of London.

money is ploughed 

back into the apprenticeships.

Association of Professional Landscapers ( APL ) 

The APL comprises accredited landscape companies 

who design, build and maintain gardens. The 

inspection process to join is the industry’s toughest. 

After initial inspection, members are inspected 

annually to ensure that they have the correct 

insurances, comply with H&S law and their work is to 

the highest standard. The APL is the only landscaping 

scheme operator of Trustmark, a government 

endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades

The British Association of Landscape Industries 

was established in 1972 as the UK’s representative

Our Bespoke Stone Centre in 

West London opens up a world 

of possibilities when it comes to 

putting your own unique stamp on 

a project. Our team of experienced 

stonemasons are ready to produce 

whatever you need, whether that’s 

a new pier cap to match some 

existing Victorian masonry or an 

extensive and intricate bespoke 

paving feature. Lead-in times 

average just four to six weeks, so 

you won’t be waiting long to take 

delivery of that unique piece of 

stonemasonry. 

At the centre of our bespoke 

stone operation is an eleven-strong 

team with a wealth of practical 

experience and a genuine passion 

for their work. Our stonemasons 

have a range of different skills from 

creating complex 3D programs 

for automated cutting on the CNC 

(computer numerical control) 

machinery, to hand dressing and 

polishing, all of which combine to 

provide you with bespoke stone 

which is cut and finished exactly to 

your specifications. 

We’re happy to work 

from templates you create, 

or alternatively you can take 

advantage of our new Laser 

Templating service. Our estimator 

will visit your site, measure the 

required area with the laser 

equipment, map the contours onto

work is completed, all bespoke

our skilled stonemasons. 

Visits are tailored to the 

needs of your group, providing 

an opportunity to visit our West 

London Showroom—where we 

give information on the different 

stones, as well as on products 

and services available—or our 

nearby depot. Here we explain 

how stone is handled from the 

moment it arrives to the time 

it is loaded for delivery. A day 

could also include a presentation 

on our sealing and pointing 

products.

latest technology and with a 

dedicated team of passionate 

and highly skilled masons, our 

Bespoke Stone Centre is under 

constant improvement. We 

aim to keep it at the forefront 

of the very latest production 

techniques, allowing us to 

improve lead times, offer greater 

choice and value for money, and 

make our clients’ working lives 

as easy as possible. With that 

in mind, we have introduced a 

new Laser Templating service to 

our repertoire. We’ve invested in 

state-of-the-art laser equipment 

and training for our estimating 

and masonry teams, and we are 

already seeing our customers 

reaping the benefit of this new 

addition to our service menu. 

Previously, clients who 

needed to have bespoke stone 

cut to complex shapes or to fit 

a curve would provide us with a 

template. These were not quick 

or easy for our customers to 

produce or transport, it being 

necessary to make them from 

cumbersome materials that 

would withstand a wet cutting 

process, such as plywood. 

There was also the risk that the 

template provided would not 

be 100% accurate, sometimes 

resulting in expensive recuts, 

pushing the budget of the 

project upwards. On a highly 

complex project with a tight 

deadline, this is simply too 

much risk and too much wasted 

time on site. Laser Templating 

removes all of these concerns. 

Instead of heavy wooden 

templates, our estimator can 

travel to site with a compact 

briefcase containing the laser 

equipment and take completely 

accurate measurements of the 

area. Back at the Bespoke Stone 

Centre, the measurements 

can be uploaded directly to 

the CNC machine which then 

cuts the stone to precisely the 

right dimensions. Since the 

laser equipment is operated 

by London Stone, we accept 

full responsibility for the 

dimensions taken. So, in the 

extremely unlikely event that the 

dimensions are incorrect, any 

recuts will be at our own cost. 

Our estimator, Piotr, likens it to 

an insurance policy, giving you 

complete peace of mind.

Petrographic Description 

An assessment of macroscopic 

and microscopic characteristics. 

Properties such as rock group, 

particle shape, grain size and 

mineral composition will be 

established. The most pertinent 

information for the lay person 

would be the rock group i.e. 

sandstone, limestone slate, etc. 

Water Absorption at 

Atmospheric Pressure 

This test indicates how much 

water is absorbed by the material 

when fully immersed. The value 

represents the additional weight 

taken on by the sample as a 

percentage of the dry weight. 

Higher water absorption indicates 

more free space is available within 

the structure of the material. 

Compressive Strength 

This gives an indication of ultimate 

loading capacity for natural stone 

setts. Cubes have a vertical load 

applied until failure. The load 

required to crush the sample is 

the compressive strength. Natural 

stone setts with high compressive 

strength properties are well suited 

to high traffic areas. 

Flexural Strength 

This gives an indication of how 

much bending load a natural stone 

slab will take before it breaks. 

Products with high flexural strength 

are suitable for low and high traffic 

areas, whereas products with 

low flexural strength may only be 

suited to low traffic areas. 

Frost Resistance 

Frost resistance is measured by 

exposing samples to a specified 

number of freeze/thaw cycles. 

The samples are then visually 

inspected and flexural strength 

tested to establish if the process 

has affected performance. 

Products which are not frost 

resistant are not suitable for UK 

exterior use. 

Abrasion Resistance 

This test indicates how resilient a 

stone is to traffic, and how much 

wear will be tolerated. Samples 

are placed against a metal 

wheel and after a set number of 

revolutions the width of the groove 

formed is measured. 

Slip Resistance 

This is evaluated using Unpolished 

Slip Resistance Value (USRV). 

A pendulum test is performed, 

which imitates the action of a foot 

slipping over the surface of the 

finished surface. It is important to 

test materials dry and wet.

Sandblasting 

The surface of natural stone 

paving can be sandblasted to add 

texture, commonly used when 

clients are trying to improve the 

slip resistance of any given type 

of natural stone. It can also be 

used to improve or change the

Calibrating 

London Stone can calibrate any 

type of natural stone to a specified 

thickness. Especially popular 

for step treads, coping stones 

and pool surrounds, calibration 

is carried out accurately to 

tolerances of +/-2mm. 

Polishing 

The appearance of a piece of 

stone can be dramatically changed 

by polishing. Polishing can be 

carried out on site to remove 

defects or marks, or it can be used 

to improve the appearance of 

cut edges of coping stones, step 

treads and any other piece 

of masonry with an exposed 

edge on display.

Adequate drainage is an essential part of any 

exterior paved area. Sitting water can undermine 

the stability of paved areas, encourage algae growth 

and also seriously effect the aesthetics of a natural

Channel Drains are an economical drainage system 

used to channel water away from buildings and 

property, where visual aesthetics are not crucial. 

Channel Drains can be used in driveways and patios,

ACO Sump Unit

at the end of your drainage system prior

Often the means, that provides 

a route through a garden or a 

particular point in a space to rest 

and contemplate; stone is a crucial 

element in most designs, that 

should be carefully considered and 

work seamlessly and in perfect 

harmony with the planting choices 

and wider landscape. Many of you 

will have heard the popular phrase 

‘right plant right place’. Well I’m a 

strong believer in ‘right stone right 

space’. Think beyond the variety 

of stone; consider the finish, the 

size, the pattern. London Stone 

has been a fantastic resource for 

me, allowing my imagination to 

be the limit when it comes to hard 

landscape design. The quality of 

service matches the quality of 

their diverse range of products; 

both are as good as it gets. I feel 

extremely privileged to have had 

the opportunity to exhibit at the 

RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Show 

gardening provides a fantastic 

opportunity to showcase your 

work on an unparalleled platform. 

The 2014 Help for Heroes 

garden was my show gardening 

debut. Like any other garden 

I endeavoured to strike the 

appropriate, subtle balance 

between hard and soft landscaping 

elements. Based on the Military

I also used traditionally hand 

carved pieces of stone to articulate

resonated with the charity and the 

garden. 

My 2015 Sentebale garden saw 

stone heavily featured and it was 

London Stone that stepped up to 

take on the paving challenge. On 

plan; a simple meandering path 

that lead to a paved terrace. In 

reality; 36 unique pieces of 50mm 

thick sawn sandstone, individually 

cut to exacting standards, every 

edge hand-fettled, pre-sealed 

and sandblasted over steel 

templates revealing footprints 

mimicking a child running through 

the space. It is this attention to 

the fine detail that is crucial when 

planning a show garden and 

London Stone absolutely nailed 

it. It was of course a pleasure 

collaborating with the team, who 

shared my passion, enthusiasm 

and commitment to the task at 

hand, going above and beyond 

throughout. They were able to 

facilitate my every need and 

continue to do so outside of the 

realms of show gardening fantasy 

land, with my day to day projects. 

I have had the good fortune 

to use many of the London Stone 

products, but there are a couple 

I seem to find myself drawn to 

when creating new concepts

GARDEN DESIGN 

The creation of show gardens 

is in the DNA of my company; 

it certainly defines me as a 

landscaper and has done for 

over a quarter of a century. 2016 

will see my 27th consecutive 

year at Chelsea Flower Show, 

undoubtedly the pinnacle of 

horticultural excellence throughout 

the world. Myself and my team 

have become intricate players on 

this world stage, in fact, I worked 

out that I have personally spent 

over three years of my working 

life on the hallowed ground I 

affectionately call ‘the field of 

dreams’. There I have built 90 

plus gardens, more than any living 

person, add to those at Hampton 

Court and it puts my show garden 

tally to over 125 show gardens 

created since the formation of my 

company some 26 years ago. 

Next year alone, we are set to 

build seven show gardens - you 

could say we have an addiction. 

Why do we put ourselves under 

that amount of stress, I hear you 

say? It would be a fair question! 

Yes, it’s not for everybody; some 

try it and they have a torrid time. 

Once is enough; they are mentally 

and physically drained I hear you 

say! It would be a fair question, 

yes, it’s not for everybody, some 

try it and for some they have a 

torrid time and one is enough, 

they are mentally and physically 

drained. Relationships between 

client, contractor and designer can 

be fraught and often end in tears 

and tantrums. I have seen it all 

many times; designers crushed, 

in tears, blaming everybody when 

the medal they get is the wrong 

colour. The fall out can be horrid, 

yes, there are many good reasons 

show gardens should be avoided! 

However, once hooked, they are 

addictive and all consuming. 

So why do we do it? I have 

come to the conclusion I am an 

adrenaline junkie; I am drawn to 

things that I know could hurt me, 

like the motorcycles I love to ride. 

And just like riding a powerful 

motorbike, it’s safe if you prepare, 

train yourself and kit out properly. 

Show gardens are an important 

part of our business. In part, we do 

it for the money. In a typical year, 

it will significantly contribute to our 

sales and the benefits outweigh 

the negatives. 

Over the years I have worked 

for most countries that have a 

link to horticulture; USA, Japan, 

China, Malaysia, Australia, New 

Zealand, Singapore, Turkey, to 

name but a few. It has allowed me 

to travel to these countries, work 

alongside skilled tradespeople 

and understand the culture and 

differences, and develop lasting 

friendships. Not to mention my 

staff, gaining first-hand experience 

and exposure for themselves. 

Every year we benchmark 

ourselves against others at the

of my major competitors? See how 

they work, how they communicate, 

what kit they use. What can I learn 

and improve on? And I do, every 

single year. 

I am blessed to have probably 

the most complete skilled 

workforce of any show contractor. 

Many are long time served and

amazingly skilful, not to mention 

resourceful. They are paid well for 

their precious time and we have 

a laugh while we work. It is the 

nature of the company that we 

help others along the way too, 

and it is not uncommon to see 

Landform staff and kit in all parts 

of the show ground. We all get a 

kick out of helping others out of 

a jam. Word gets out of a good 

deed done. There are contractors 

who would not help you, which 

I personally find sad. Our show 

presence helps attract new staff 

and talent. Medal success helps 

staff recruitment: people want to 

work for successful companies. 

For us, it’s all in the planning, 

which takes months to perfect. 

We plan everything; we control 

timelines and deadlines, we have 

plan B’s and plan C’s! We have 

detailed works programmes; we 

have labour planned and back-up 

labour plans. We have detailed 

meetings with our many suppliers. 

We rehearse playing the ‘get out 

of jail’ card, which often happens 

when pushing the design envelope 

with new concepts and materials 

has gone horribly wrong. For me, 

it’s a time to see how the team 

and adapt. You see seasoned 

players pulling this card out every 

year as weather, lack of time and 

other factors can play cruel games 

with your precise planning. And 

then it’s there; completed and 

scrubbed up, like crossing the 

finish line of a marathon. Having 

completed four marathons, I can 

confidently say that the feeling is 

similar: exhausted, relieved and 

yet happy. Medals aside, you are 

judged by your peers. Failure is 

just not an option. To not finish 

would be commercial suicide; it’s 

a public display, an annual audit, 

delivered to perfection in a given 

amount of time – in other words, 

a perfect contract! Although the 

build does not get the coverage as 

much as the design process, we 

make our own good image with 

finished work, and we work the 

stand. We network, we make new 

friends and reacquaint with old 

ones. The feeling of achievement 

for you and your team is certainly 

worth the pain. We celebrate our 

success and start to plan the next 

campaign. 

The shows have been good to 

me and through these theatrical 

productions I have raised my 

profile and that of my company. 

Now judging others as a seasoned 

RHS judge and gardens assessor, 

I would urge all landscapers to 

at least have a go and, if you do 

it in the next decade, you might 

be lucky and I might be around 

to give you a few wise words of 

encouragement.

home, and he wanted a garden 

that looked great and was easy to 

entertain in. 

The brief included removing 

all of the grass and incorporating 

room for a sculpture, various 

sitting areas to enjoy the different 

aspects of the garden and room 

to incorporate another Glantz 

Cantilever umbrella that he had in 

his holiday home in Portugal. 

The designer specified London 

Stone’s Beola Bianca Porcelain 

paving for the hard surfaces within 

the garden. This product blends 

in with the contrast of materials 

between the Ipe Hardwood 

decking, the borders and the black

DEVIL’S IN THE DETAIL

In September 2014 we were 

approached by a new client, 

Lesley, to redesign and build her 

back garden. She had been living 

in the property for two years and 

decided enough was enough with 

her old garden; it had seen better 

days. 

Elaine and I met with Lesley 

and her daughter Tracey, and 

over the next month we came up 

with the design layout. Although 

appearing simple on paper, 

executing a project with various 

levels, drainage issues and a 

swimming pool proved challenging 

in reality. 

The fun soon began less than 

a week into the clearance work. 

It was evident that whilst the 

swimming pool company wanted 

to refurbish the old pool, this was 

not going to be possible. The 

existing tiling was removed to 

uncover a collapsing frame. Once 

the frame was removed, there were 

further issues as we discovered a 

mains pipe just 10cm below the 

base of the pool. Not knowing 

if this pipe was live or not, a 

consulting engineer advised us to 

dig, install a new section and cover 

it with concrete. Since completing 

the project, it turned out that the 

pipe was a redundant storm drain, 

however it’s always safest to 

assume a pipe is live. 

Once the pipe issue was 

resolved, our team of seven – 

along with six subcontractors 

– worked in all weather to get the 

garden ready for the next biggest 

task: laying 200 square metres of 

Contemporary Grey Sandstone 

from London Stone. With project 

manager Liviu excelling in setting 

out the pavers, we were able to get 

the paving down within two weeks, 

including hand-pointing all the 

joints. The results speak volumes 

for choosing a colour matched 

grouting product. Other tasks 

that we completed around the 

site included building an angularshaped 

composite deck, installing 

irrigation and lighting, and 

undertaking fencing repairs. We 

brought in our team of plantsmen 

who helped fill the garden with 

lots of structural and colourful 

planting. Part of the client’s brief 

had been to salvage some of the 

existing palms to be transplanted 

around the pool’s edge along with

other plants in hot colours, giving a 

warm, Mediterranean feel. 

The pool contractors pulled 

out all the stops to ensure that 

this entire project was finished 

within eight weeks, just in time 

for the late spring/early summer 

sunshine. The clients were thrilled 

with the finished result and some 

four weeks later we managed to 

capture some fantastic images 

with the client dipping her toes 

in the pool and walking along her 

glistening sawn paving. The clients 

were given full care instructions on 

how to look after their new garden, 

and in spring 2016 works will 

be starting on the large carriage 

driveway and planting to the front 

of the property.

A FAMILY SPACE 

Harrington Porter 

GARDEN DESIGN 

The brief was to design and 

build a South London family 

garden for a family of five, 

including three kids. The existing 

overgrown and traditional high 

maintenance garden was to be 

cleared in favour of a simple, open 

and child friendly area. Despite 

the request for a cool, Ibizan-style 

entertaining space, the clients still 

required some planting to provide 

softness and a traditional feel. 

150 square metres of No Mow 

artificial lawn was laid, a step 

down from a Millboard composite 

decking terrace, laid level with 

the internal floor for an indoorout 

feel. The client had a stylish 

grey wood-effect porcelain tile 

internally and the grey of the deck 

complemented this well. The main 

features of the garden comprise 

raised beds, in-house bespoke 

tongue and groove fencing with 

slatted trellis and, of course, Urban 

Grey Porcelain from London Stone. 

The perimeter of the garden is 

made up of the same fencing and 

trellis for continuity, and narrow 

flower beds have been created for 

planting around the perimeter to 

soften the edges.

A plant list supplied by trade 

suppliers Evergreen was kept to a 

minimum in terms of variation. A 

simple palette of white, green, pink 

and blue make up all-season-round 

planting. Lighting and irrigation – 

again, in-house – was installed too. 

Furniture was supplied by Made. 

com and makes up the eating and 

entertaining area, across the way 

from a bespoke-built BBQ and 

storage cupboards. All material and 

colour choices were made on the 

basis that less is more and clean, 

crisp and accurate lines – blurred 

slightly by planting – comprise this 

contemporary, urban family garden.

SOMETHING FOR ALL

This garden on the fringes of 

Richmond Park underwent quite 

a transformation from an expanse 

of lawn with a couple of sheds 

and an old terrace to an attractive 

and functional space for family 

enjoyment. The finished garden 

has something for everyone 

including a large lawn, a putting 

green, overhead beams supporting 

a hanging seat and a gym/studio 

to the rear. Our team had plenty to 

get its teeth into. 

The main focus of the hard 

landscaping revolves around a 

paved terrace area close to the 

house encompassing a built-in 

barbecue and a fireplace feature. 

Both are block constructions, 

the fireplace being finished with 

a textured tile cladding and the 

barbecue rendered, painted and 

fitted with a granite worktop. 

We were particularly impressed 

with the quality of the Grey Sawn 

Yorkstone we used to construct 

the terrace. It has a wonderfully 

attractive veining throughout and 

is beautifully machined making 

installation easy. 

Apart from the lawn and 

the terrace, the other surface 

coverings include pale decorative

aggregate retained in a stabilising Managing Director 

system and a light coloured nonslip 

composite decking which

immediate rear of the house and an 

area around the gym. 

The health and vigour of the 

planting is aided by the addition 

of well-rotted manure and the 

installation of a drip irrigation system. 

Strategic lighting brings the garden 

into use during the hours of darkness. 

We have been asked to maintain 

the garden following the build and 

it’s going to be great to see how it 

matures through the seasons and 

over the years.

COME IN & RELAX 

Nic Howard 

The diminutive courtyard that 

sat alongside this Edwardian 

cottage in Surrey started life as 

as a dark, awkwardly shaped 

triangular space, which was almost 

entirely crazy paving. Its one 

saving grace was the 100 year-old 

brick wall that ran along one side. 

The garden was open to the front 

of the property, being partially 

screened by a large conifer, so the 

plan was to build a new wall to 

enclose the space and transform 

the garden into a bright and 

welcoming courtyard that brimmed 

with plants and flowers. 

The 11 x 6 metre area is now 

paved with Kota Blue Limestone, 

which is laid square to the house 

to increase the sense of space 

in the garden whilst also creating 

dynamic lines across the space 

and bigger planting areas. 

The heavy clay soil was 

particularly challenging but this 

was improved with the addition 

of lots of organic matter and, 

although horrible to dig, the plants 

absolutely love it. The old wall 

puts the main border into shade 

for most of the day so this is 

planted with a voluminous mix of 

Hakonechloa, Rodgersia, Hosta, 

Hydrangea and Camellia. Interest 

is added throughout the year by 

filling gaps with flowering annuals 

and biennials.

THE RIVER GARDEN 


GARDEN DESIGN 

The River Garden is a modern 

courtyard garden in an idyllic 

setting- looking out over a 

meandering river with a lush watermeadow 

beyond. The client’s brief 

was to make the most of their 

waterside location and the outlook 

across the flood plain. 

To achieve this, four gentle 

changes of level help to enhance 

the views and ‘borrow’ the 

landscape beyond. The geometric 

design, with an emphasis on the 

horizontal, maximises the width 

of the garden and helps to frame 

the view. The lower terrace is 

inspired by the idea of a jetty, 

extending out over the water and 

wrapping around the tree. The 

curved seating provides a pleasing 

afternoon spot to sit in the sun and 

watch the world drift by. 

Blue Grey Granite was chosen 

for its contemporary look and 

warm colour, which matches 

the architectural detailing on 

the bi-fold doors. Custom built 

seats maximise the terrace 

space, whilst providing plenty of 

seating and a deceptive feeling of 

spaciousness in what is a small 

garden. Furniture and planters 

were carefully chosen to complete 

the detailing. The colourful bird 

cushions were ordered from New 

Zealand after the client saw the 

designer’s own ones (bought on a 

trip back to her native country). 



The planting scheme combines 

grasses for their long season of 

interest with flowering perennials. 

Three pre-existing trees were 

incorporated into the design, 

helping to complete the garden 

by framing the views, providing 

height and focal points.
